ATTENTION: This device must be protected by a circuit breaker (20A max).
WARNING: Ground this device in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC) requirements. Do not rely solely on the yoke plate's contact with a metal wallbox for adequate grounding. Use the device's ground wire for a secure connection to the electrical system's safety ground.
ATTENTION: Ground this device in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC). Do not rely solely on the front plate's contact with a metal wallbox for adequate grounding. Use the device's ground wire to establish a secure connection to the electrical system.
IMPORTANT: This device must be installed by a licensed electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
IMPORTANT: If unsure about any part of these instructions, consult a qualified electrician.
IMPORTANT: Use this device only with copper or copper-clad wire. Do not use aluminum wiring. This product has not been approved for use with aluminum wiring.
IMPORTANT: Using this product in a manner other than outlined in this document voids your warranty. Control4 is not liable for any damage incurred with the misuse of this product. Refer to "Troubleshooting."
IMPORTANT: Do NOT use a power screwdriver for installation. Overtightening screws can strip them or warp the keypad, interfering with button operation.
IMPORTANT: This is an electronic device with intricate components. Handle and install with care!
IMPORTANT: When used with an Auxiliary Keypad (C4-KA-xx), the connecting wire must not exceed 45 m (150 ft.) at 120V AC, and 30 m (100 ft.) at 277V AC.
Installation Instructions
Ensure the location and intended use meet the following criteria:
- For replacing a traditional 3-way switch, refer to "Two-Location" wiring configurations in the appropriate load control device installation guide.
- Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Wireless control system range and performance depend on device distance, home layout, separating walls, and nearby electrical equipment.
Turn off local electrical power via circuit breaker or fuse. Use an inductive voltage detector to ensure wires have no power.
Step 3: Prepare Wires
NOTE: Wallbox wiring shown is an example; your wire colors may differ. Consult a trained electrician if unsure about wire functions (Line In/Hot, Neutral, Earth Ground).
Prepare each wire by stripping 5/8 of an inch of insulation from the end.
Diagram Description: Wire Stripping
Figure 1 illustrates stripping wire insulation to a length of 5/8 inch.
Step 4: Connect Wires
IMPORTANT: Failure to ground this product as described in "Warnings and Considerations" may result in reduced immunity to electrical disturbances (e.g., ESD, lightning) and may void the warranty.
Identify and connect the keypad wires to the wallbox wires using wire nuts as shown in Figure 2.
Diagram Description: Keypad Wiring
Figure 2 shows keypad wiring connections: Black wire to Line In/Hot, White/Blue wire to Neutral, and Green/Yellow wire to Earth Ground. The diagram visually represents these connections within the wallbox.
Step 5: Fit Wires into Wallbox
Fit wires back into the wallbox. Bend wires in a zigzag pattern to facilitate folding them into the wallbox (Figure 3).
Diagram Description: Bending Wires
Figure 3 illustrates bending wires in a zigzag pattern to fit them into the wallbox.
Step 6: Mount Keypad
Align the keypad to the wallbox (model # label at the bottom) and fasten with screws. Tighten screws until the yoke plate's back side is flush with the wall surface, but do not overtighten, as this can warp the keypad and cause malfunction.
Step 7: Install Button Components
Install the Top Actuator Bar, Bottom Sensor Bar, and buttons following the "Button Installation" section.
Step 8: Install Faceplate
Install the Control4 Faceplate per the Faceplate Installation Guide, or attach a standard Decora-style faceplate.
Step 9: Restore Power
Turn on power at the circuit breaker or replace the fuse.
Low-Voltage Bus Installation
This device can also be powered by a low-voltage wired keypad bus. Refer to Figure 4 for details. For bus wiring information, visit: ctrl4.co/buswiring
Diagram Description: Low-Voltage Bus Power Wiring
Figure 4 illustrates the low-voltage bus power wiring diagram. It shows connections between multiple wired keypads and the configurable keypad (C4-KC120277-XX) using GND, D-, D+, and V+ terminals. It also depicts connections to a Bus Ethernet Gateway and a Bus Power Supply (C4-DIN-BPS48).
Button Installation
For instructions on installing or removing buttons, refer to the Keypad Buttons Installation Guide.
Operation and Configuration
Upon initial power-up, all status LEDs will illuminate green, indicating power. The keypad will not control loads until configured within a Control4 system. For setup, refer to the Composer Pro User Guide.
Button Tap Sequences
Button tap sequences are defined below. For single-button sequences, use the top-most installed button. For two-button sequences, use the top-most and bottom-most buttons.
Function | Button Sequence |
---|---|
Identify | 4 |
Zigbee channel | 7 |
Reboot | 15 |
Factory reset | 9-4-9 |
Leave mesh and reset | 13-4-13 |
Troubleshooting
If keypad LEDs do not light up:
- Ensure the circuit breaker is not OFF or tripped.
- Check wiring (refer to Step 2 in "Installation Instructions").
Care and Cleaning
- Do NOT paint the keypad or its wall plate.
- Do NOT use chemical cleaners.
- Clean the keypad surface with a soft, damp cloth as needed.
