Microlife BP B2 Plus Blood Pressure Monitor
This document provides essential information for the operation and safety of the Microlife BP B2 Plus blood pressure monitor.
Intended Use
This oscillometric blood pressure monitor is designed for measuring non-invasive blood pressure in individuals aged 12 years and older. It is clinically validated for patients with hypertension, hypotension, diabetes, pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, atherosclerosis, end-stage renal disease, obesity, and the elderly.
Preparation for Measurement
To ensure accurate readings, follow these preparation steps:
- Sit on a chair with back support, keeping legs uncrossed.
- Avoid wearing thick or tight-fitting garments on the upper arm.
- Place the cuff's artery mark over your brachial artery.
- Fit the cuff snugly but not too tightly around the arm.
- Position the cuff approximately 2-3 cm above the elbow.
- Keep your arm still and refrain from speaking during the measurement.
- Avoid activity, eating, smoking, or consuming caffeine for at least 30 minutes before measurement.
- Relax for 5-10 minutes before taking the measurement.
- Measure before taking medication.
Using the Device
First-Time Use
After unpacking, insert four 1.5 V AA batteries into the battery compartment located on the bottom of the device, observing correct polarity.
Setting Date and Time
After inserting batteries, the [M icon] will flash. Use the [M-button] to turn the device on/off and the [Time button] to confirm. Set the year, month, day, hour, and minutes sequentially using the [M-button] and [Time button].
Selecting the Correct Cuff
Microlife offers various cuff sizes. Choose the size that best fits your upper arm circumference:
Cuff Size | Circumference of Upper Arm |
---|---|
S | 17 - 22 cm |
M | 22 - 32 cm |
M - L | 22 - 42 cm |
L | 32 - 42 cm |
L - XL | 32 - 52 cm |
Pre-shaped cuffs are available. Ensure you use only Microlife cuffs. If the enclosed cuff does not fit, contact Microlife Service. Connect the cuff connector to the cuff socket.
Selecting User and Mode
The device allows storing results for individual users. Select user 1 or user 2 using the [Time button]. Before each measurement, ensure the correct user is selected. You can choose between standard (single measurement) or MAM (automatic double measurement) mode. To select MAM mode, press and hold the [Time button] for approximately 3 seconds; the MAM icon will appear. To switch to standard mode, press the [M-button] until the MAM icon disappears and confirm with the [Time button].
In MAM mode, two measurements are taken consecutively with a 15-second interval. The final result is an average, providing a more reliable reading.
Taking a Blood Pressure Measurement
- Select standard or MAM mode.
- Press the [ON/OFF button] to start.
- The cuff will inflate automatically. Relax, do not move, and do not tense your arm muscles. Breathe normally and do not talk.
- The [Cuff Fit Check] indicator (AR) will show if the cuff is placed correctly. An [Suboptimal Cuff Fit] indicator (AR-A) means it's not perfect but still usable.
- Pumping stops when the correct pressure is reached, and the pressure gradually decreases.
- During measurement, the [Pulse Indicator] (AQ) flashes.
- The result, including systolic (AK), diastolic (AL) blood pressure, and pulse rate (AM), will be displayed.
- Remove the cuff after the measurement.
- The device switches off automatically after approximately 1 minute, or you can press the [ON/OFF button] to stop it manually.
This monitor is tested for use during pregnancy. If you detect unusually high readings during pregnancy, re-measure after an hour and consult your doctor if still high.
Manual Inflation
For high systolic blood pressure, you can manually inflate the cuff. Press the [ON/OFF button] after the cuff reaches approximately 30 mmHg and hold it until the pressure is about 40 mmHg above the expected systolic value, then release.
Deleting Readings
To delete a displayed reading, press and hold the [ON/OFF button] until the 'M' ([M icon]) (AP) icon flashes. Confirm deletion by pressing the [Time button]. 'CL' will appear upon successful deletion.
Evaluating Your Blood Pressure
The triangle indicator on the display ([BP Range Indicator]) shows the range of your blood pressure:
Range | Systolic (mmHg) | Diastolic (mmHg) | Recommendation |
---|---|---|---|
Blood pressure too high | ≥135 | ≥85 | Seek medical advice |
Blood pressure elevated | 130-134 | 80-84 | Self-check |
Blood pressure normal | <130 | <80 | Self-check |
The higher value determines the classification. For example, 140/80 mmHg or 130/90 mmHg indicates "blood pressure too high".
Pulse Arrhythmia (PAD)
The [Pulse Arrhythmia Indicator] (BT) symbol appears if pulse irregularities are detected. This may affect the reading. If the symbol appears frequently, consult your doctor. This device helps detect irregularities early but does not replace a cardiac examination.
Data Memory
The device stores the last 60 measurements. Press the [M-button] when the device is off to view stored values, starting with the average of the last 3 readings. Repeatedly pressing the [M-button] cycles through previous readings. Readings with suboptimal cuff fit (AR-A) are not included in the average. The oldest value is overwritten when the memory is full (61st value). It is recommended to have values evaluated by a doctor before the memory is full.
Clearing All Values
To permanently delete all stored values, press and hold the [M-button] while the device is off until "CL ALL" appears. Confirm by pressing the [Time button]. Individual values cannot be cleared.
Battery Management
Battery Indicator
A flashing [Battery Indicator] symbol (14) indicates low battery. The device will still measure reliably, but replacement batteries should be obtained. A flat battery symbol means no further measurements can be taken, and batteries must be replaced.
Battery Replacement
Open the battery compartment, replace the four 1.5 V AA batteries with new ones, ensuring correct polarity. Reset date and time as per Section 1.
Rechargeable Batteries
NiMH rechargeable batteries can be used. They must be removed and recharged when the low battery symbol appears and should not remain in the device. Always remove rechargeable batteries if the device is not used for a week or more. Batteries cannot be charged within the monitor; use an external charger.
Using a Mains Adapter
The device can be powered by a Microlife mains adapter (DC 6V, 600 mA). Use only the original adapter. Ensure the adapter and cable are undamaged. Plug the adapter cable into the mains adapter socket and then into the wall socket. No battery power is consumed when the adapter is connected.
Error Messages
If an error occurs, the measurement is interrupted and an error message is displayed:
Error Code | Description | Potential Cause and Remedy |
---|---|---|
«Err 1» ([Err 1]) | Signal too weak | Pulse signals too weak. Re-position cuff and repeat. |
«Err 2» ([Err 2]) | Error signal | Detected error signals (e.g., movement, muscle tension). Repeat measurement, keeping arm still. |
«Err 3» ([Err 3]) | Abnormal cuff pressure | Inadequate pressure in cuff (leak, loose cuff). Check connection, ensure cuff is not too loose. Replace batteries if necessary. Repeat. |
«Err 5» | Abnormal result | Inaccurate signals. Read checklist for reliable measurements and repeat. |
«Err 6» MAM Mode | MAM Mode errors | Too many errors in MAM mode. Read checklist for reliable measurements and repeat. |
«HI» | Pulse or cuff pressure too high | Cuff pressure > 299 mmHg or pulse > 200 bpm. Relax for 5 mins and repeat. |
«LO» | Pulse too low | Pulse < 40 bpm. Repeat measurement. |
