Safety Information

WARNING

Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION

Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury. It could also be used to alert against unsafe practices.

NOTICE

Indicates a situation that could result in equipment or property-damage only accidents.

Only qualified personnel should install and service the equipment. The installation, starting up, and servicing of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment can be hazardous and requires specific knowledge and training. Improperly installed, adjusted or altered equipment by an unqualified person could result in death or serious injury. When working on the equipment, observe all precautions in the literature and on the tags, stickers, and labels that are attached to the equipment.

Addressing Overview

The Air-Fi™ Wireless Communications Sensor (WCS-SD-SB) connects to a Tracer SC system via Wireless Communication Interface (WCI) units. Each sensor must be assigned a unique group and network address that matches the WCI it communicates with. The unit controller (UC/BCI) also has an address. For multiple sensors connected to a single UC/BCI, each sensor requires a unique sensor address.

Address Matching Requirements:

Example Network Structure:

The system is organized into Tracer SC groups, which contain networks. Each network has WCIs, and WCIs connect to UC/BCIs, which in turn connect to sensors (WCS).

WCIs connect to UC/BCIs with addresses like 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 401, 402.

Sensors (WCS) are associated with UC/BCIs. For example, a WCS connected to UC/BCI 402 might have a group/network address of '22' and a sensor address of '1' or '2' if multiple sensors are connected to that UC/BCI.

Sensor Display Legend:

For installations with multiple sensors connected to a single UC/BCI, refer to document BAS-SVX40*-EN for detailed instructions on setting unique sensor addresses.

Installation and Addressing Steps

1. Remove the Cover:

Carefully pull the insulation strip from between the batteries to activate the sensor.

2. Install RH Sensor Module (Optional):

A 2% relative humidity sensor module (part number X13790973030, model WCS-SH) can be installed on the WCS either before or after the WCS is powered up. Install the RH sensor module in the designated location on the WCS.

3. Set Group and Network Address:

Use the 'Address' button and the display to set the group and network address.

4. Set Unit Controller (UC) Address:

Use the 'Address' button and the display to set the UC address.

5. Set Sensor Address:

If multiple sensors are connected to the same UC/BCI, use the 'Address' button to set a unique sensor address for this WCS.

Exiting Address Mode:

To exit address mode, press and hold the 'Address' button for 3 seconds.

After addresses are set, the WCS will attempt to join the network and associate with the controller. Error code 'E2' will appear on the sensor display until the WCS successfully joins the network. Error code 'E1' will be displayed until association is successful. You can press the center button twice at any time to force the WCS to reattempt joining the network and associating with the controller.

Securing the Backplate

Secure the backplate to a mounting surface.

Error Codes and Signal Testing

Error Codes

Possible CauseExplanation/Resolution
Sensor is not associated with UC (E1)The configured address in the sensor does not match the dials of a UC for any WCI in the same wireless network. Re-associate the sensor with the WCI by correcting the UC address in the sensor.
Sensor is not communicating (E2)Normal for sensor configured with GRP-NET 0-0. Verify that the sensor has the correct group (GRP) and network (NET) addresses. Verify that the sensor is within radio range. If the sensor has previously joined the network, verify that WCIs in range are powered up. Press the center button on the front of the sensor twice to force association. Otherwise, set the correct GRP and NET addresses and open the wireless network to allow the sensor to join.
Sensor drains battery current during sleep (E3)If the error persists and batteries drain prematurely, the sensor may have defective components and need to be replaced.
Internal failure (E7)Sensor display fails to communicate with the radio. Replace the sensor.
Wrong sensor address (E8)The configured sensor address does not match the sensor address that is expected by the UC. Use Tracer TU to configure the UC for the quantity of sensors it should accept, if more than one.
Duplicate sensor (E9)Another sensor with the same configured UC address and sensor address is already associated with the UC. Resolve the duplication. This may involve waiting (up to 51 minutes) for the UC to forget the address of a failed sensor.

Testing Radio Signal Quality and Battery Life

The sensor display provides indicators for signal quality and battery life.

Symbol on Sensor Display Indicates...Description
E2 (Associated but no communication)Indicates the sensor is associated but has no communication with the WCI. Only the battery level and error code will appear.
[Signal Bars - 3 Bars] Excellent signal qualityGood signal margin for reliable communication. Corresponds to a green link on the Tracer TU network health map.
[Signal Bars - 2 Bars] Satisfactory signal qualityAdequate signal quality for reliable communication. Corresponds to a yellow link on the Tracer TU network health map.
[Signal Bars - 1 Bar] Poor signal qualityUnreliable communication. Recommend moving the sensor or the WCI to a better location if the quality remains low for repeated signal tests. Corresponds to a red link on the Tracer TU network health map.
[Battery - Full] 100-50% battery life remaining.
[Battery - Half] 50-3% battery life remaining.
[Battery - Empty] Less than 3% battery life remaining. When the remaining battery power is approximately 1%, the battery symbol will flash on the main display screen. In the test mode display screen, the empty battery symbol will not flash.
