Canon XF Series Professional HD Camcorders

Setting new standards in image quality, versatility, and workflow integration for professional filmmakers and broadcasters.

Introduction to the XF Range

Canon introduces the XF range of handheld professional HD video cameras, designed to deliver exceptional image quality and broadcast-standard capabilities. These file-based camcorders utilize an MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) recording codec, setting new benchmarks in performance.

The XF range offers four compact, ergonomic models: the XF300 and XF305, and the more portable XF100 and XF105. They are engineered for professional users, including camera operators, filmmakers, and broadcast professionals, offering a forward-thinking solution for high-quality production.

Our Heritage: Canon's HD Camcorder technology is built on over 50 years of imaging expertise, providing superior picture quality through precision engineering and optical know-how.

Outstanding, Professional HD Recording

The XF camcorders are the first professional models to feature an MPEG-2, 4:2:2, 50Mbps recording codec, ensuring outstanding imaging quality and data rates expected by broadcasters. They support industry-standard MXF files and are compatible with major NLE software packages for seamless workflow integration.

Exceptional Image Quality: Unique Canon technologies enable a new benchmark in imaging performance. Native 1920x1080 Full HD image capture and 4:2:2 colour sampling deliver exceptional detail and colour resolution.

The MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) recording codec offers a blend of broadcast image quality and workflow integration. The 50Mbps data rate meets HD broadcast production requirements while keeping file sizes manageable. The Material eXchange Format (MXF) ensures compatibility with existing workflows.

Color Sampling Explained: 4:2:2 colour sampling provides twice the vertical colour resolution of 4:2:0, resulting in better gradation, finer detail, and smoother diagonals, crucial for accurate chroma keying. This is visualized by comparing color information across pixel grids.

CompactFlash Card Recording: The XF range uses non-proprietary CompactFlash (CF) cards, offering speed, robustness, and availability. Each camcorder features dual card slots for continuous recording, with support for UDMA certified cards. The XF100 and XF105 offer simultaneous dual-slot recording for added security.

Advanced Features and Design

Canon L-Series HD Video Lens: Developed from decades of lens innovation, these lenses deliver superb optical quality. The XF300/305 feature an 18x zoom lens, while the XF100/105 have a 10x wide-angle lens. Features include manual control rings, glass ND filters, and advanced optics to minimize chromatic aberration.

Image Stabilisation: Three modes are supported: Standard IS, Dynamic IS (for walking), and Powered IS (for stationary shots at full telephoto).

Autofocus Modes: Canon's Instant AF system uses dual sensors for fast, accurate focusing. Face Detection and Face Tracking capabilities ensure subjects remain in focus.

DIGIC DV III Image Processor: This processor ensures natural colors, excellent black reproduction, and accurate tonal gradations. It also enables Canon Face Detection and optimizes power consumption for longer battery life.

Full HD CMOS Sensors: The XF300/305 use three 1/3-inch Full HD CMOS sensors for independent RGB capture, providing exceptional color performance, low noise, and wide dynamic range. The XF100/105 feature a single 1/3-inch CMOS sensor with a Bayer pattern filter.

Ergonomics and Usability: The camcorders are designed for shooting comfort and ease of use, with well-balanced bodies and intuitive control layouts. High-resolution LCD screens (10.1cm on XF300/305, 8.8cm on XF100/105) aid shot setup and review. Features like Waveform Monitor, Vectorscope, and Edge Focus assist in achieving precise image control.

Customization: Extensive customization options are available, including Custom Functions, assignable buttons, and Custom Picture settings (over 90 parameters) to tailor the camera's look and feel. Gamma curves offer quick adjustments for desired aesthetics.
