4. Installation
4.1 Location
The XR102 is designed for installation in climate-controlled living spaces. Place the unit in a central location with good air circulation.
For proper temperature sensing, avoid exposing the thermostat to heat radiated from lamps, sunlight, fireplaces, or any other radiant heat source.
Avoid locations close to windows, behind doors, or in alcoves with poor air circulation, adjoining outside walls, or doors that lead to the outside.
Select a location that prevents the thermostat from being directly exposed to air currents from supply registers or ceiling fans.
Mount the control on a section of interior wall that does not contain hot or cold water pipes or ductwork.
Figure 1: Placement of the 102
Correct Placement: Position the thermostat approximately 2 feet from the ceiling and 5 feet from the floor. Ensure natural heat dissipation from the thermostat itself and avoid direct airflow from vents or fans. The onboard thermistor measures ambient temperature.
Incorrect Placement: Avoid placement near ceiling fans, vents, or areas with direct airflow that could lead to inaccurate temperature readings.
4.2 Mounting / Installation
Follow these steps to mount the XR102 thermostat to the wall:
- Turn OFF all power to heating and cooling equipment.
- If replacing an existing thermostat:
- Record the color and terminal marking of each wire.
- Disconnect wires from the existing thermostat, being careful not to let them fall back into the wall.
- Remove the existing thermostat from the wall.
- Pull the thermostat cover off the body. Do not force or pry.
- Position the thermostat body over the wall opening and mark mounting hole locations using the base as a template.
- Move the base out of the way, drill mounting holes, and mount the sub-base to the wall. Pull the wire bundle through the hole in the base. Leveling is for appearance only.
- Connect wires to the terminal block on the base using the appropriate wiring diagram.
- Push excess wire into the wall and plug the hole with fire-resistant material (like fiberglass insulation) to prevent drafts.
- The thermostat includes two "AAA" alkaline batteries with a battery tag to prevent power drainage.
- Remove the battery tag to engage the batteries.
IMPORTANT: Do not exceed specification ratings. All wiring must conform to local and national electrical codes. This control is a precision instrument; handle carefully to avoid malfunction.
Typical Terminal Designations and Jumper Information
The thermostat base has terminals for connecting wires. Key terminals include R (power), Rc/Rh (power), W (heating), Y (cooling), G (fan), O (reversing valve), and B (reversing valve). Specific wiring diagrams are provided for different system types.
Jumper Information:
- A jumper can be removed for 2-transformer RC/RH systems.
- A jumper can be added for heat pump applications.
- A W904 clip is available for Celsius display conversion.
- A W905 clip is available for hydronic systems to produce longer heating cycles.
Electric/Gas Switch: Located on the thermostat base.
Battery Location: Located on the thermostat base.
4.3 Battery Replacement
To replace batteries, set the system to OFF, remove the thermostat cover, and install two premium brand "AAA" alkaline batteries in the bottom of the thermostat.
If the home will be unoccupied for an extended period (over 3 months) and the "CHANGE" indicator is displayed, replace the batteries before leaving.
CAUTION: Replace batteries when "CHANGE" is displayed. This indicates limited remaining battery life. The system will not operate with dead batteries.
CAUTION: To prevent compressor and/or property damage, if the outdoor temperature is below 55°F (13°C), DO NOT operate the cooling system. Ensure compressor oil heaters have been operational for six hours and the system has not been operational for at least five minutes.
