HOW TO USE THE RECEIVER
1. RECEIVER FITTING
- Improper Fit: A loose fit can cause the receiver to move, leading to skin irritation from contact points rubbing. Inconsistent contact can also result in inconsistent corrections.
- Proper Fit: The receiver should fit snugly, with the contact points pressing firmly against the dog's skin. Two fingers should fit between the collar strap and the dog's neck. The best location is on either side of the dog's windpipe.
Attention: Leaving the receiver in the same spot for extended periods can cause skin irritation. Reposition the receiver every few hours and remove it after 8 hours of use. Check for skin irritation each time.
2. HOW TO INSERT THE STRAP
- Insert the strap through the receiver, following the direction of the arrow on the receiver.
- Ensure the strap passes through the middle groove of the receiver.
- Attach the receiver to the strap by threading the strap through the opposite hole.
3. OBTAINING MAXIMUM DISTANCE
The operating range of the 280X is 1/2 mile. Range can vary based on transmitter usage. For maximum range, hold the transmitter away from your body and avoid touching the antenna. Ensure the device is properly charged to maximize signal strength.
The range is reduced when the transmitter's antenna is covered or in contact with your body. For optimal range:
- Carry the handheld transmitter with the antenna facing away from you.
- Do not place the handheld transmitter with the antenna touching your body or facing downwards.
4. FINDING THE RIGHT STIMULATION LEVEL
The 280X features a rheostat dial on the transmitter. Always start at the lowest level and gradually increase. The correct level is found when the dog shows a mild response. Adjust intensity as the dog's demeanor changes, especially during excitement or distraction.
5. NON-STIMULATION CONTACTS
- Remove the standard contact points.
- Insert the non-stimulation contacts into each place.
- Press the non-stimulation contacts to secure them.
6. LED INDICATOR
- The LED indicator flashes every 4 seconds when the receiver is on and ready. It blinks on both transmitter and receiver when transmitter buttons are pressed.
- LED Color Indicator:
- Green = Full charge
- Amber = Medium charge
- Red = Needs charge. Using the unit when the LED is red may cause it to shut down automatically.
Receiver Indicator Light
When the Constant button is pressed, the receiver indicator light glows steadily (green, amber, or red based on battery life) for up to 12 seconds. When the Nick button is pressed, the light flashes briefly.
7. CARE FOR LCD TRANSMITTERS IN COLD TEMPERATURE
In cold temperatures (below 10°F), the transmitter's LCD may appear dim or unresponsive. Wait for the display to become visible before selecting a training level. The transmitter functions correctly even if the LCD screen is dark or unresponsive. In very cold weather, the LCD screen may take time to respond, potentially causing the intensity level to appear stuck. Turning the rheostat dial will still change the actual receiver intensity, even if the screen display is delayed.
8. BATTERY CHARGE
The Dogtra 280X uses a lithium polymer battery. Recharge if the light is red, the device does not turn on, or it shuts off unexpectedly. Use only Dogtra-approved batteries, chargers, and accessories.
- The device is partially charged upon leaving the factory. Charge for 2 hours before first use.
- Unplug the charger when not in use. Charge fully once every 3 months if stored unused.
Charging Instructions:
- Open the rubber plug on the battery charging port and connect the charging cable.
- Connect the charger to a 120V wall outlet or a cigarette lighter designed for lithium polymer batteries (or a 220V European charger). All lights will glow red, and the device will automatically turn off during charging. The device must be turned on again after charging and unplugging before use.
- The battery fully charges within 2 hours. The light stays red while charging and turns green when fully charged.
- After charging, secure the rubber plug over the battery charging socket.
Recharging is required when:
- The LED on the transmitter or receiver is red.
- The LED on the transmitter or receiver does not light up.
- A low-battery sound occurs when the transmitter or receiver is powered off.
Charger Information:
- Manufacturer: E-SUN
- Manufacturing Country: CHINA
- Model Name: MKC-0502500VT
- INPUT: 100-240V-50/60Hz 0.4A
- OUTPUT: 5V 2500mA
9. ATTACHING THE BELT CLIP
- Align the belt clip with the groove on the back of the transmitter.
- Use a screwdriver to firmly tighten the screw of the belt clip.
Caution: Firmly tighten both screws of the belt clip, but avoid overtightening.
10. USING THE TEST LIGHT
- Turn on the receiver by pressing and holding the on/off button. The receiver's light will briefly turn on and then blink once every 4 seconds. If the light is red, the receiver needs charging.
- Turn on the transmitter by pressing and holding the on/off button. The LED blinks every 4 seconds, and battery life is shown on the LCD screen. If the battery icon shows only 1 bar, it needs charging.
- Place the test light onto the contact points.
- Press the Nick button on the transmitter; the test light should illuminate briefly. The higher the intensity, the brighter the test light.
- Observe the test light while pressing the Constant button. The light should remain on as long as the button is held. As a safety feature, stimulation stops if the Constant button is pressed for over 12 seconds.
- Turn the rheostat dial clockwise and counterclockwise. The test light will be brighter at higher stimulus levels and dimmer at lower levels. (Note: The test light may not be visible if the intensity level is below ten.)
GENERAL TRAINING TIPS
Your dog should know basic obedience commands before starting training with the 280X. Training involves teaching commands, followed by repetition. Introduce distractions and different locations as the dog becomes proficient.
Obedience Training on the Leash
Ensure your dog understands commands like sit, stay, here, heel, and kennel before using the e-collar for reinforcement. Use a leash and collar for initial teaching, applying a tug for reinforcement. Use positive reinforcement and praise for compliance. Once commands are understood, the e-collar can be used for reinforcement.
Beginning E-Collar Training
With the dog on a leash and wearing the e-collar, continue obedience drills. Apply light stimulation (Nick or Constant) when a command is given, removing it as the dog complies. Through repetition, the dog learns to perform the command. The final step is the avoidance phase, where the dog learns to avoid stimulation by performing commands. The e-collar then serves as a reminder for non-compliance. Keep initial training sessions short and positive.
How Much Stimulation to Use
Always start with low stimulation levels and increase as needed based on the dog's disposition and the situation. Using the correct stimulation level ensures a more controllable environment and reduces stress for the dog, leading to better performance.

MAINTENANCE
Basic Maintenance
- Ensure the rubber charging cap is securely in place during use.
- After each training session, inspect the unit for missing parts or casing damage. Damaged casing may void the waterproof guarantee.
- Rinse the receiver and clean out any dirt or debris.
Storage Maintenance
- Fully charge the unit before storing it for extended periods.
- While in storage, charge the unit once a month and before the first use.
- Store units at room temperature and avoid extreme climates.
TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
1. My dog is not reacting to the system.
- Ensure the receiver and transmitter are on.
- Verify the collar strap is tight enough for both contact points to touch the dog's skin.
- If your dog has a thick or long coat, the contact points may be too short. Trim the hair on the dog's neck so both contact points touch the skin.
- The intensity level may be too low. Gradually increase stimulation until the dog responds (e.g., neck movement, head shaking, looking over shoulder).
2. The LED indicator light comes on, but I do not feel any stimulation.
The battery may be low. Check the LED light for battery life.
3. The transmitter has no range or stimulation is less when the dog is farther away.
- Antennas may be damaged. Contact customer service at (888) 811-9111 or visit www.dogtra.com to order parts.
- The indicated range is for flat terrain. Heavy brush, trees, hills, or moisture can affect range. For best range, hold the transmitter vertically above your head or move to higher ground.
- Electrical conductors like cars, chain-link fences, metal structures, and radio towers can affect range. Operate away from these objects for best results.
4. My units are not holding a charge.
- Batteries may not be charged properly, or the charger, splitter, or charging port may be malfunctioning. Units can be sent in for inspection.
- The charging pin may be damaged. If the metal pin inside the charging port is wobbly, broken, or missing, the unit needs repair. Ensure the charging port is clean before charging; use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. If the dog was in saltwater, rinse the receiver and charging port with clean water.
- If issues persist, contact Dogtra customer service at info@dogtra.com or (888) 811-9111.
5. My dog has skin irritation.
This may be due to improper fit or prolonged use. Consult a veterinarian if skin irritation occurs. After the skin heals, continue use and check the dog's neck each time.
