Volkswagen 2021 ID.4 EV Car User Guide
Installation
This guide should be used in conjunction with the Volkswagen Owner's Manual and Infotainment Supplement. Always pay attention to the road and avoid distractions. Some infotainment features are only accessible when the vehicle is stationary.
Steering Wheel Controls:
- Left Side: Buttons for Cruise Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Travel Assist features. The MODE button allows selection via finger slide or press.
- Right Side: Buttons for audio selections, voice recognition, and the ID. Cockpit.
Other Controls:
- Voice Control Button: Activates the native Volkswagen Voice Recognition system with a short press, or a paired phone/App-Connect with a long press.
- VIEW Button: Selects driver assistance systems view and navigation view via finger slide or press.
- Volume Buttons: Adjust audio, navigation, and notification volume.
- Vertical Arrow Buttons: Navigate menus in the ID. Cockpit display. Touch the down arrow for the next track, up arrow for the previous track.
- Windshield Wiper and Washer Lever: Controls intermittent, rain-sensing, low, and high functions with down-clicks. Wiper speed is adjusted with a switch on top. Pull the stalk towards the steering wheel to wash. Press up for a single wipe. Push away for the rear wiper. Push and hold to wash the rear window.
- Gear Selector: Rotate forward for Drive (D) or Energy Recuperation (B), backward for Reverse (R). Neutral is activated by a gentle twist.
- Infotainment Touchscreen: User-configurable screen for accessing features like phone, media, radio, App-Connect, climate control, vehicle settings, and navigation.
- ID. Cockpit Screen: High-resolution LCD color screen displaying vehicle information profiles (e.g., IQ.DRIVE, speed, directions). The VIEW button on the steering wheel toggles between selections.
- USB Connection: USB Type C ports for charging or data transfer. Ports marked with a specific symbol transfer data and charge; others supply power only.
- Climatronic Control: Manages cabin temperature and ventilation, with automatic or manual control options. Seat heating can also be activated/deactivated.
- Starter Button: Alternative method to turn the vehicle on/off. Some functions activate upon driver approach with the key and deactivate when the parking brake is engaged.
- Volume Slider: Touch-sensitive bar to adjust infotainment volume.
- Temperature Sliders: Touch-sensitive bars for driver and passenger zones to adjust HVAC temperature.
- Home Button: Tap to open the home screen.
Starting and Stopping Your ID.4
The ID.4 features all-electronic ignition and drive activation.
Turning on the ID.4
Method 1: With a valid key in the vehicle, press the brake pedal. The ID.4 drive system activates.
Method 2 (Alternative):
- Press the starter button once.
- With the brake pedal pressed, turn the gear selector lever to Drive (D) or Reverse (R). A visual signal and a low, constant hum indicate the drive system is ready.
Shutting off the ID.4
- When a drive is complete, press and hold the brake pedal.
- Set the electronic parking brake by pressing the button on the end of the gear selector.
- Exit the vehicle and lock the door; the vehicle powers off automatically.
Alternative Shut-off: Once the brake is engaged, press the starter button once.
Gear Selector Lever
The column-mounted shifter allows activation of forward or reverse by twisting, or engaging Park (P) by pressing the button on the end. From Neutral (N), where no power is transmitted to the wheels and electric drivetrain braking is unavailable:
- D: Twist the gear selector forward.
- B: Twist the gear selector forward twice for energy recuperation when coasting.
- R: Twist the gear selector toward you (only when stationary).
- [Park symbol]: Only switch on when the vehicle is stationary.
Electrify America DC Fast Chargers
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 includes 3 years of unlimited charging at Electrify America DC Fast Chargers at no additional cost. These chargers are located along major highways and in metropolitan areas. To enroll, you need a 6-digit enrollment code, which may be provided by your dealer or found in your welcome email. You can also contact VW Customer Care at 1-800-822-8987 or check your window sticker.
Enrollment Steps:
- Download the 'Electrify America' app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Open the app and create an account (email verification required). If you have an existing account, tap 'Account'.
- Tap 'Choose Membership Plan', then 'Premium Offers'.
- Enter your 6-digit enrollment code and select the '2021 ID.4 Charging Plan'. Input your vehicle's 17-digit VIN for verification.
- Review and accept the Plan Disclosure.
- Enter payment information and set up auto-reload for idle fees or charges on non-covered vehicles.
Note: 1. Offer available on MY21 ID.4 vehicles. 3 years of unlimited charging begins upon purchase and is non-transferable. Not for commercial use. Requires Electrify America account, app, enrollment in ID.4 Charging Plan, and acceptance of Terms of Use. Idle fees apply after a 10-minute grace period post-charge. Frequent charging may affect battery capacity. 2. Standard data rates apply.
Infotainment
The ID.4 features a user-configurable touchscreen for controlling various functions, including Apps, Vehicle, Sound, Navigation, and Telephone.
Customizing Icon Order:
- Touch and hold an icon until it is highlighted.
- Drag and drop the icon to the desired location.
Creating Widget Pages:
- Swipe right to the last available page.
- Touch and hold an existing widget, then tap 'EDIT'.
- Tap the '+' key and choose a page layout (up to 4 screens available).
- Press 'EDIT' to select widgets for each section. Some features are not available in all widget sizes.
- Tap a widget space to highlight it, then select an available widget.
- Tap the 'X' button when finished. To edit later, press and hold a widget for 2 seconds.
The touchscreen provides quick access to features like Climate Control, Navigation, Phone, and Radio.
Radio
Tap the radio widget on the Home screen to tune into FM stations. A list of available stations and a frequency band selector will appear.
Use the [previous-station] and [next-station] arrows to select stations, or scroll through favorite stations. The frequency/Source button switches between media options.
Favorites
In Radio mode, press and hold a station to designate it as a favorite. Access favorites by referring to the [favorites-tab]. Edit or delete stations via the Edit icon.
Media
Playback media from data carriers and streaming services. Media sources include USB storage, Bluetooth devices, and streaming services like Apple Music and TIDAL, depending on vehicle equipment and Car-Net status.

ID. Cockpit
The ID. Cockpit is a high-resolution LCD color screen displaying different information profiles. Views can be selected by swiping the VIEW button on the steering wheel:
- Summary: Shows mileage, charge status, and range before engaging the drive system.
- Basic Display: Activates once the drive system is engaged, showing Driver Assistance systems, speed, and navigation.
- Driver Assistance Systems: Displays active driver assistance systems and vehicle speed without navigation.
- Navigation: Shows route guidance and speed.
Controlling Climatronic
Press the [climate-control-button] located beneath the infotainment screen and temperature/volume sliders to control the HVAC system. Traditional controls are under the 'Classic Climate' tab.
- Fan: Use touch-sensitive keys or the slider bar to adjust fan speed.
- Temperature Adjust (Touchscreen): Tap '+' and '-' for small adjustments. Press and hold the temperature number for dramatic changes, then drag left (-) or right (+).
- Temperature Adjust (Slider Bar): Tap or slide the bar left for colder, right for warmer temperatures.
- Temp Sync: Press the SYNC button to set a consistent temperature for the 2-zone climate system based on driver zone settings.
- Seat and Steering Wheel Heating: Tap icons within the climate screen to activate or adjust intensity. An Auto-on function is available in the settings menu.
Smart Climate
The Smart Climate tab offers shortcuts for HVAC actions:
- Clearing fog and ice from the windshield.
- Directing warm or cool air to the footwell.
- Directing warm air onto the steering wheel.
- Directing fresh air from outside into the interior.
- Temporarily increasing heating or cooling power.
Windshield Wipers
Intermittent/Rain-sensing
Move the wiper stalk one click down from OFF to activate intermittent wipers with rain-sensing. The switch on top adjusts the time interval between wipes; moving it right shortens the interval.
Continuous
- LOW: Move the wiper stalk down two clicks from OFF.
- HIGH: Move the wiper stalk down three clicks from OFF.
Rear Wiper
Push the lever one click away from you. If front wipers are on and the car is in Reverse, the rear wiper performs a single wipe.
Service Position
With the hood closed and drive system off (within 30 seconds of powering off), press and hold the windshield lever upward. The wipers move to service position, allowing you to lift them from the windshield. Before driving, fold them back. Turn the drive system ON and briefly press the wiper lever up to return wipers to Park position.
Charging
Vehicle Charging
Before Charging:
- Unlock the ID.4.
- Press the left side of the charging flap to open.
AC Charging
Charging Station or Wall Box:
AC charging at a station or wall box is recommended for higher power (up to 11 kW). The maximum power depends on the station, cable, and charger equipment.
Household 110V Outlet:
The ID.4 includes a 110V charging cable for household outlets. Ensure your electrical system is working correctly. Due to low power delivery, schedule ample charging time or use for overnight top-offs.
Connecting the Charging Cable:
- Connect the charging cable to the power supply after fully unwinding. A protective device performs a self-test at home.
- Ensure the charging connector is properly aligned and insert it into the charging socket. The LED light on the socket will flash or briefly flash white.
- The vehicle starts charging up to the maximum battery charge level or according to settings. The charging station may need to be enabled.
DC Fast Charging:
DC charging at public stations offers very high power (up to 125 kW) for significantly reduced charging times.
- Remove the protective cap and attach it to the hanger.
- Insert the charging station connector into the charging socket. The LED light will flash or briefly flash white.
- Activate the charge via mobile app, charger screen, or other instructions.
- Charging starts immediately.
During Charging:
The charging socket indicator pulses green during normal operation. A red indicator signifies a fault.
After Charging:
The charging socket indicator turns green when the desired charge level is reached.
Removing the Charging Connector:
- Unlock the vehicle.
- Press the release button on the charging connector and remove it.
- If 'Automatically release connector' is enabled, it unlocks automatically after charging.
- Disconnect the charging cable from the power supply and replace the protective cap.
- Close the charging socket flap until it audibly engages.
Scheduled Charging via the Infotainment System:
Charge scheduling allows you to limit charging times, potentially taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates or ensuring the vehicle is ready for a journey. Pre-conditioning the cabin is also possible.
To set up a charging schedule:
- Save a charger location via the Vehicle Settings menu.
- Tap 'Add current position as a charging location' and name it.
- Tap a timer icon to open the scheduling menu.
- Tap the '>' icon on a timer option.
- Set the desired departure time and select days. Check the box next to the departure time.
To set desired temperature:
- Press the Home button.
- Tap [temperature-up-icon].
- Tap [temperature-down-icon].
- Set desired temperature.
- Enable 'Include climate control' in your charge schedule.
Windows and Interior Locking
Windows
The driver's side door has two window switches controlling all four windows.
Opening Rear Windows:
- Tap the REAR control to activate rear power windows; the control light will illuminate.
- To open, press the [window-down-switch]. To close, pull the [window-up-switch].
- Briefly tap the REAR control again to deactivate rear window operation.
Child Lock
Press the [child-lock-icon] control to deactivate rear power window buttons. The electric child safety door lock is activated simultaneously.
Interior Lock Button
When the lock button is illuminated yellow, doors are locked. If not illuminated, doors are unlocked.
Seats
Adjusting the Seats in Your ID.4
Seats are precisely adjustable. Options include six-way adjustable seats with power recline, or 12-way power-adjustable seats with memory and massage, depending on trim level. Controls are located on the seat sideboard.
- Slides the seat forward or back.
- Adjusts the backrest angle.
- Raises or lowers the seat cushion.
- Adjusts the 4-way lumbar (if equipped).
Memory Seats
- Adjust the driver's seat and outside mirror positions.
- Press and release the SET button.
- Press and hold Memory button 1 or 2 until a chime sounds.
The massage feature (if equipped) is activated by a switch on the seat's left side. When active, the lumbar support moves and massages the lower back.
Recalling Stored Memory Settings
With the vehicle stopped and ignition ON, press and hold the corresponding memory button.
Trunk Lid
Adjusting the Trunk Lid Opening Angle
If space is limited, you can change the trunk lid's opening angle. It must be at least half open.
- Interrupt the opening/closing process at the desired position.
- Press and hold the [trunk-lid-button] until emergency flashers flash once and an audible alert sounds.
- The adjusted angle is saved.
Easy Open/Easy Close
The trunk lid can be raised and lowered hands-free. To operate Easy Open/Close, with the vehicle key near the trunk:
- Position your foot behind the middle of the bumper.
- Quickly swing your leg close to the bumper.
- Remove your foot quickly from the sensor area.
- Visual feedback is given via turn signals.
- The trunk lid will open (Easy Open) or a continuous chime confirms successful activation (Easy Close).
Walk away from the trunk area. The chime continues as the trunk closes. Ensure all valid vehicle keys are removed from the trunk lid area for operation.
Pairing a Compatible Phone
- Check phone compatibility at www.knowyourvw.com/bluetooth.
- With ignition on and vehicle in Park, turn on the Infotainment system. The vehicle's Bluetooth will be in 'discovery' mode.
- On your phone's Bluetooth menu, search for new devices and select 'MY VW XXXX' (last four digits of VIN).
- A connection request will appear on the Infotainment display.
- Press 'Yes' on the Infotainment display if the PIN matches your phone's PIN.
- Press 'Pair' or 'OK' depending on your phone's display.
- Allow contacts to sync when prompted.
Primary and Secondary Phone Functionality
Two phones can connect simultaneously. Only contacts from the primary phone appear in the Infotainment system. Switch phones by tapping the phone name in the top right of the Phone screen and selecting the desired phone from the drop-down menu.
Voice Recognition via Volkswagen Native Infotainment
Many ID.4 functions (navigation, climate control, media, telephone) can be controlled via voice recognition. Launch voice control using the [talk-button-icon] on the multi-function steering wheel or by saying "Hello ID."
Enabling Activation Word:
- Tap Home [home-icon] on the touchscreen, then select the settings icon [settings-icon].
- Tap Voice control, then Activation word.
Launching Voice Control (Steering Wheel Button):
- A short press of the Talk button activates in-vehicle voice recognition.
- A long press launches the digital assistant of a connected mobile device.
Voice prompts vary by language and VW Car-Net account status. Refer to the Owner's Manual for details.
Voice Recognition Tips:
- Say contact names exactly as stored in your phone's contact list.
- For multiple numbers per contact, use shortcuts (e.g., "Call John Smith work") or select from options (work, mobile, home).
Answer an Incoming Call:
The Bluetooth system will ring. Press the OK button on the steering wheel or the green Phone icon [phone-icon] on the touchscreen to answer.
Volume Settings: Use the Volume Up/Down buttons on the steering wheel while on a call.
End a Call:
Press the red Phone icon [phone-red-icon] in the phone menu.
Cancel Voice Recognition or Route Guidance:
When Voice Recognition is active, press the Voice Control button [voice-control-icon] and say "Cancel."
Wireless Charging
Wirelessly Charging a Mobile Device
Qi-capable devices can be charged wirelessly in the center console between the front seats.
- Locate the liner mat with the phone symbol [phone-symbol-icon], indicating the center of the charging pad.
- Remove any foreign objects from the mat.
- Place your device on the pad, display facing upward, with its Qi charger over the phone symbol.
- The infotainment display will confirm charging has started.
Light and Vision Panel
Turning on the Lights
- Switch on the ignition.
- Tap the button repeatedly until the desired light setting is highlighted in the ID Cockpit Screen and illuminated on the touch panel.
App-Connect
Volkswagen App-Connect allows smartphone integration. Pair your smartphone via Bluetooth to display apps on the touchscreen. You can also use a USB port or the wireless charging mat.
Wireless App-Connect with Apple CarPlay Integration
To connect:
- Ensure your iPhone has the latest iOS version.
- Pair your phone to the Volkswagen Infotainment system with Bluetooth.
- A prompt will ask if you want to use Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay.
- Select Apple CarPlay. Confirm on your iPhone if it's the first time.
Apple CarPlay®
Apple CarPlay provides an updated interface for tunes, turns, Siri® suggestions, calendar access, and maps. It makes driving easier and more enjoyable.
To connect:
- Ensure your iPhone has the latest iOS version.
- Unlock your iPhone and plug it into the USB port with a certified lightning cable.
- A screen will appear asking if you want to connect with Apple CarPlay. Select 'Connect'.
Features:
Apple CarPlay features Siri voice control. Activate Siri by pressing and holding the Voice Control button on the steering wheel or pressing and holding Home on the touchscreen.
- Home: Return to the Apple CarPlay home screen or Dashboard. Long press activates Siri.
- Phone: Make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemail via Siri.
- Maps: Get turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions, and estimated travel times. Siri can assist with directions.
- Messages: Send, read, and reply to text messages via Siri.
- Volkswagen Logo Icon: Returns you to the Volkswagen native user interface while keeping Apple CarPlay active.
To charge iPhone only, disconnect from Apple CarPlay via the Volkswagen Logo icon and select 'Disconnect'. This allows Bluetooth while charging. Always pay attention to the road. Not all features are available on all operating systems. Standard text and data rates apply. App-Connect features require compatible devices, operating systems, and apps.
Wireless App-Connect Android Auto
To connect:
- Ensure your device has the latest Android™ OS.
- Pair your phone to the Volkswagen Infotainment system with Bluetooth.
- Select 'Use Android Auto' or 'Cancel' for Bluetooth connection.
Android Auto™
Use Android applications for directions, texts, and calls via Google on Android Auto. It helps you focus on the road.
To connect:
- Ensure your device has the latest Android™ OS and download Android Auto from the Google Play Store. An active Google Account and internet connection are required. Android 10+ has it pre-installed.
- Plug your Android phone into the USB port using a certified USB Cable.
- Press the App key on your touchscreen.
- Select Android Auto. Ensure the phone is unlocked OR pair via Bluetooth and select 'Use Android Auto'.
- Select OK for data transfer prompt.
- Follow on-device instructions.
- Android Auto will appear on the Infotainment touchscreen after setup.
Features:
- Google Assistant: Use voice commands for messages, directions, and media control. Say "Hey Google" or long-press the Voice Control button/tap the Microphone icon.
- Navigation: Provides turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions, and estimated travel times. Predicts destinations based on calendar and recent activity.
- Phone: Listen to and reply to text messages, make calls, or check voicemail.
- Home Screen: Returns to the Android Auto home screen.
- Music and Audio: Access favorite artists, songs, and playlists. Stream from apps like Pandora, Spotify, and iHeartRadio.
Tapping the Exit icon [exit-icon] returns to the Volkswagen native user interface. Select 'Disconnect' to fully disconnect Android Auto.
Warning and Indicator Lights
Refer to your vehicle's Owner's Manual for additional information on indicator lights.
Central Warning Light: [exclamation-triangle-icon] Indicates a general warning.
Electronic Parking Brake: [parking-brake-icon] Indicates the electronic parking brake is engaged.
Brake System Malfunction: [brake-warning-icon] Indicates brake system malfunction, electromechanical brake booster failure, or low brake fluid level.
ABS Malfunction: [abs-icon] Indicates Anti-Lock Braking System malfunction.
Engine Coolant System Malfunction: [coolant-icon] Indicates engine coolant system malfunction.
Take Over Steering and Be Ready to Brake: [steering-wheel-icon] Warning to take over steering and prepare to brake.
Take Over Steering Immediately: [steering-wheel-red-icon] Indicates immediate need to take over steering.
Steering Malfunction: [steering-wheel-malfunction-icon] Indicates a steering malfunction.
12 Volt Vehicle Battery: [battery-icon] Indicates the 12 Volt vehicle battery status.
Check Brake System: [brake-wear-icon] Indicates a need to check the brake system.
Fasten Safety Belt: [seatbelt-icon] Reminds the driver to fasten their seatbelt.

Airbag System/Safety Belt Pretensioner Malfunction: [airbag-icon] Indicates a malfunction in the airbag system or safety belt pretensioner, or that they are deactivated.
Climate Control Not Working: [sun-cloud-icon] Indicates climate control is not working correctly or CO₂ concentration cannot be measured.
Turn Signals: [turn-signal-left-icon] / [turn-signal-right-icon] Indicate turn signal operation.
Trailer Turn Signal: [trailer-icon] Indicates trailer turn signal operation.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Regulates: [acc-icon] Indicates ACC is regulating speed relative to the vehicle ahead.
