Microwave Oven Use
A magnetron produces microwaves that reflect off the oven's interior surfaces and pass through the turntable and cookware to heat food. Microwaves are attracted to and absorbed by fat, sugar, and water molecules in food, causing them to move and generate heat.
- To avoid damage, do not lean on or allow children to swing on the microwave oven door.
- Do not operate the microwave oven when it is empty.
- Baby bottles and baby food jars should not be heated in the microwave oven.
- Items like clothes, flowers, fruit, herbs, wood, gourds, and paper (including brown paper bags and newspaper) should not be dried in the microwave oven.
- Paraffin wax will not melt as it does not absorb microwaves.
- Use oven mitts or pot holders when removing containers.
- Do not overcook potatoes. Let them stand for 5 minutes after cooking to finish.
- Do not cook or reheat whole eggs in the shell, as steam buildup can cause them to burst. Cover poached eggs and allow standing time.
Food Characteristics
The amount, size, shape, starting temperature, composition, and density of food affect cooking results.
Amount of Food
More food requires longer cook time. Check for doneness and add time as needed.
Size and Shape
Smaller pieces cook faster. Uniformly shaped foods cook more evenly.
Starting Temperature
Room temperature foods heat faster than refrigerated, which heat faster than frozen.
Composition and Density
Foods high in fat and sugar heat faster. Heavy, dense foods require longer cook times than light, porous foods.
Cooking Guidelines
Covering
Covering food retains moisture, shortens cook time, and reduces spattering. Use cookware lids or approved microwave-safe plastic wrap (vented). Condensation on the door and cavity is normal.
Stirring and Turning
Stirring and turning redistribute heat evenly. Stir from outside to center. Turn food over if possible.
Arranging
Arrange thinner parts and smaller items toward the center. For multiple items of the same size, place them in a ring pattern.
Piercing
Before heating, pierce foods with skins or membranes (like potatoes, egg yolks, hot dogs) in several places to allow steam to vent.
Shielding
Use small pieces of aluminum foil to shield thin parts of irregularly shaped foods, bones, and foods like chicken wings, leg tips, and fish tail. Refer to the "Aluminum Foil and Metal" section.
Standing Time
Food continues to cook by natural heat conduction after the cycle ends. Standing time depends on food volume and density.
Cookware and Power
Cookware and Dinnerware
Cookware and dinnerware must fit on the turntable. Always use oven mitts or pot holders as dishes may become hot from food heat. Do not use cookware with gold or silver trim. Test cookware before use.
