Important Notes on the Use of Thermal Imaging Cameras

Legally Mandated Usage Restrictions

In Germany

• The use of thermal imaging cameras as clip-on or attachment devices is subject to weapon law, hunting law, and other regulations, which may vary from place to place. Please inform yourself about the current regulations with the local authorities responsible before such use.

Outside Germany

• In certain countries or regions, the use of thermal devices and related technologies may be restricted. Therefore, you should definitely inquire with the embassy of the country concerned or your tour operator before traveling abroad. Violations will be prosecuted by national authorities.

Regulatory Notes

The production date of your product can be found on the labels on the packaging. The format is Year/Month/Day.

CE Marking

The CE marking of Leica products documents compliance with the fundamental requirements of the applicable EU directives.

Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Devices

(Applies to the EU and other European countries with separate collection systems.)

This device contains electrical and/or electronic components and must therefore not be disposed of with normal household waste. Instead, it must be handed in for recycling at appropriate collection points provided by the municipalities.

This is free of charge for you. If the device itself contains replaceable batteries or rechargeable batteries, these must be removed beforehand and, if necessary, disposed of properly by you. Further information on this topic can be obtained from your local authority, your waste disposal company, or the shop where you purchased this device.

Safety Notes

General

• Do not use your device in the immediate vicinity of devices with strong magnetic fields or electrostatic or electromagnetic fields (e.g., induction cookers, microwave ovens, TV or computer monitors, video game consoles, mobile phones, radio devices). Their electromagnetic fields can interfere with image recording.
• Image recording can be disturbed if you place the device on a television or operate it in its immediate vicinity, or use the device near mobile phones.
• Strong magnetic fields, e.g., from loudspeakers or large electric motors, can damage stored data or disturb recordings.
• Do not use the device in the immediate vicinity of radio transmitters or high-voltage lines. Their electromagnetic fields can also interfere with image recordings.
• Do not attempt to remove housing parts (covers). Professional repairs should only be carried out by authorized service centers.
• Protect the device from contact with insect sprays and other aggressive chemicals. (Washing) gasoline, thinner, and alcohol must not be used for cleaning. Certain chemicals and liquids can damage the device housing or the surface coating.
• Keep the device out of reach of small children.
• Do not look through the eyepiece while walking. Falls may result.
• Do not disassemble or modify the device; if the internal electronics are exposed, this can lead to damage or electric shock.

Eyepiece

• An eyepiece acts like a magnifying glass when direct sunlight hits it frontally. The device must therefore be absolutely protected from strong sunlight. Storing it in the shade or ideally in the bag helps to avoid damage inside the device.

Sensor

• High-altitude radiation (e.g., during flights) can cause pixel defects.

Carry Strap

• After attaching the carry strap, please ensure that the fasteners are correctly mounted to prevent the device from falling.
• Carry straps are generally made of particularly durable material. Therefore, keep them away from children. They are not toys and are potentially dangerous for children due to the risk of strangulation.
• Use carry straps only in their function as carry straps. Any other use carries a risk of injury and may damage the carry strap, and is therefore not permitted.
• Carry straps should not be used with cameras or binoculars during sports activities where there is a particularly high risk of getting caught on the carry strap (e.g., mountain climbing and comparable outdoor sports).

Important Notes

• Do not attempt to disassemble the device. Repairs should only be carried out by authorized workshops.
• Do not touch the glass surfaces with your fingers, especially not if you have previously treated them with hand cream, insect repellents, or similar. These agents can contain chemicals that damage or destroy the coatings of the glass surfaces.
• Protect the device from all impacts not caused by the weapon.
• Note down the serial number of your device, as it is extremely important in case of loss.

Warranty

In addition to your statutory warranty claims against your seller, you receive 3 years of warranty services for this Leica product from Leica Camera AG according to the following regulations. The Leica warranty therefore neither restricts the consumer's statutory rights under the applicable national law nor the consumer's rights against the dealer arising from the purchase contract concluded between them.

Warranty Regulations

By purchasing this Leica thermal imaging camera, you have acquired a product manufactured according to special quality guidelines and tested by experienced specialists at each production stage. The 3-year warranty provided by Leica Camera AG for this product is assumed by us from the date of sale under the following conditions:

1. In case of complaints based on manufacturing defects, we will cover all material costs incurred during the entire warranty period. At our discretion, we will repair the defective product, replace defective parts, or replace the entire product with an equivalent, flawless product. Further claims, regardless of their nature and legal basis in connection with this warranty, are excluded.
2. Wear parts such as eyecups, leather coverings, armoring, carry straps, and accessories are excluded from the warranty. This also applies to damage to surfaces.
3. Claims for warranty services are void if the defect in question is due to improper handling – which may also include the use of third-party accessories – if intervention by unauthorized persons and workshops has been carried out, or if the serial number has been rendered illegible.
4. Warranty claims can only be asserted upon presentation of the original invoice – bearing the date of purchase, address, and signature of the authorized specialist dealer.
5. When claiming warranty, please send the product together with the original invoice and a description of the complaint to Leica Camera AG Customer Care or a Leica national representative.

Pickup Service for Repair Submissions

Should you discover a defect in your device during the warranty period, we will arrange for its submission to our Customer Care department upon request. Hunting Ethics with Leica Thermal Imaging Cameras

• We hunt exclusively wild boar and predatory game at night.
• We primarily hunt wild boar in damaged areas in the field, but not in their resting and retreat areas in the forest.
• We use the technology not only for tracking, but also for observation and documentation.
• We want to hunt better by making it easier and better to identify game and thus avoid misfires.
• We use the new dynamics provided by the technology for exciting hunting experiences, even when stalking, and thus prevent damage to game.

Part Descriptions

The Leica Calonox Sight SE features various components for its operation and functionality. Below is a description of the key parts, referencing the numbered diagram (not shown, but implied by the original manual's layout):

1. Lens Cap: Protects the objective lens and is used for full calibration.
2. Front Lens: Germanium lens that transmits the thermal signature to the sensor.
3. Focusing Ring: Used to focus on the desired distance.
4. Eyepiece Cap: Protects the eyepiece.
5. Thread: For mounting the clip-on adapter or the eyecup (optional accessory).
6. Locking Ring: Secures the clip-on adapter.
7. USB Interface (USB-C): For image transmission (PAL) and external power supply.

Displays

Observation Mode

In observation mode, the display shows the thermal image. Indicators for various settings and statuses are visible in the header. These include (referencing the original diagram's numbered indicators):

1. Color Mode (e.g., White Hot, Black Hot, Red Hot, Rainbow)
2. Calibration Mode (Automatic, Background, Manual)
3. User Profile
4. Fog and Rain Mode

The battery charge level is displayed in the header.

Symbol Menu

The symbol menu provides quick access to frequently used settings. It typically shows icons for:

• Brightness (7)
• Contrast (8)
• Other settings (e.g., color modes, calibration modes)

A numerical indicator (1) might show the selected level or option.

List Menu

The list menu provides access to more detailed settings, including:

• Video-out
• Fog and rain mode
• Handheld mode
• Gun profiles
• Calibration mode
• Pixels defect correction
• Reticle correction
• System information
• Factory reset

Preparations

Attaching Carry Strap*

To attach the carry strap, follow these general steps (referencing the original diagram's numbered steps):

1. Thread the strap through the eyelet on the device.
2. Secure the strap by threading it back through its buckle.
3. Repeat for the second eyelet.
4. Ensure the strap is firmly attached.

Important: Please ensure that the fasteners are correctly mounted after attaching the carry strap to prevent the device from falling.

Attaching Safety Lanyard

To attach the safety lanyard to the lens cap:

1. Thread the lanyard through the designated loop on the lens cap.
2. Secure the lanyard to the device's eyelet.

Charging Battery

The device is powered by a lithium-ion battery. The battery charge level is displayed in the header.

• Grasp and pull the cover cap on the left end.
• Connect the USB-C cable.
• Connect the other end of the USB cable to a suitable power adapter (min. 1.5 A/5 V input for optimal charging time).
• The correct charging process is indicated by the status LED. When the battery is fully charged, the status LED changes from red to green.
• During charging, the symbol ⓘ appears next to the battery symbol in the header.

Mounting as Clip-on Device

If the device is to be mounted on a weapon with a riflescope, a suitable adapter is required. Leica generally recommends using adapters from the following providers:

• Recknagel
• Rusan

The following description may vary depending on the manufacturer and model. Please refer to the instructions for use of your adapter.

• Unscrew the eyepiece cap and store it safely.
• Screw the adapter onto the Calonox until it stops.
• Turn the adapter back until the locking mechanism is in the desired position.
• Hand-tighten the locking ring against the adapter.
• Slide the adapter with the screwed-on Calonox onto the objective area of the riflescope until it stops.
• Ensure that the adapter is not tilted. It must lie evenly everywhere.
• Actuate the clamping lever of the adapter to clamp it to the riflescope (observe the manufacturer's instructions).
• If necessary, the adapter and Calonox must still be aligned so that the display and reticle are not at an angle to each other.

After mounting, the Calonox screen must be aligned with the riflescope's reticle, see page 28.

Caution: Before any mounting/dismounting, ensure that the weapon is unloaded and secured.

Use as Handheld Device

For use as a handheld device/monocular (without riflescope), a suitable eyecup can be attached.

Mounting Eyecup*

• Unscrew the eyepiece cap and store it safely.
• The locking ring remains on the device.
• Adjust the eyecup with side light shield to position.
• Fix with the locking ring and hand-tighten.
• Do not apply excessive force!

Operation

Switching On/Off Device

Switching On

• Press and hold the [+]-button until the “Leica” logo appears on the monitor.
• The device switches on.

Note: The device does not switch off automatically.

Switching Off

• Press and hold the [+]-button.
• A countdown appears on the monitor, counting down the last three seconds.
• Keep the [+]-button pressed until the countdown expires.
• The device switches off.

Note: The device does not switch off automatically.

Power Saving Mode (Stand-by Operation)

• Briefly press the [+]-button.
• The device switches to stand-by mode. The power saving indicator appears.

Note: In stand-by mode, the device can be quickly activated at any time by pressing the [+]-button.

Calibration

For optimal display performance, calibrations should be performed regularly. There are two different types of calibration (quick calibration and full calibration). Which calibration is performed depends on the selected operating mode.

Three operating modes are available:

Note: For full calibration, the lens cap must be mounted.

Selecting Operating Mode

• Press and hold the Menu Selection button.
• The List Menu appears.
• Navigate to the menu item Calibration mode using the [+]-button and [-]-button.
• Repeatedly press the Menu Selection button until the desired setting is reached.
• Press and hold the Menu Selection button.
• The setting is saved. The device returns to observation mode.

Note: When used as a clip-on device, modes M or B are recommended.

Performing Calibration

Full Calibration

This type of calibration performs a complete re-measurement. This makes it significantly more effective and, for example, suitable for eliminating disturbing afterimage effects. Depending on the situation, these effects can be stronger or weaker. This type of calibration is the most accurate.

• Close the lens cap.
• Press the [-]-button.

Quick Calibration

This type of calibration is significantly faster and does not require closing the lens cap. Afterimage effects may remain under certain circumstances.

• Press the [-]-button.

Focusing

The motif is focused using the focusing ring.

• Determine the image section.
• Turn the focusing ring so that the desired parts of the motif are sharply depicted.
• The entire depth of field is covered with a quarter turn (90°) of the focusing ring.

To call up the Symbol Menu

• Briefly press the Menu Selection button.
• The Symbol Menu appears.
• After approx. 4 seconds without operation, the device automatically returns to observation mode.

To select a menu item

• Navigate to the desired menu item using the [+]-button and [-]-button.
• Briefly press the Menu Selection button.
• The menu option can now be set.

To make a setting

• Select the desired setting using the [+]-button and [-]-button.
• Briefly press the Menu Selection button.
• The setting is saved. The display returns to the Symbol Menu.

To exit the Symbol Menu

• Press and hold the Menu Selection button.
• The device returns to observation mode.

• Wait approx. 4 seconds.
• After approx. 4 seconds without operation, the device automatically returns to observation mode.

Brightness

The brightness can be set in four levels.

Color Mode

There are four different color modes to choose from:

• White Hot (warm appears white)
• Black Hot (warm appears black)
• Red Hot (warm appears red)
• Rainbow (colored)

Contrast

The image contrast can be set in four levels.

List Menu

The List Menu consists of one menu page with a total of 9 settings.

To call up the List Menu

• Press and hold the Menu Selection button.
• The List Menu appears.
• After approx. 10 seconds without operation, the device automatically returns to observation mode.

To exit the List Menu

• Press and hold the Menu Selection button.
• The device returns to observation mode.

• Wait approx. 10 seconds.
• After approx. 10 seconds without operation, the device automatically returns to observation mode.

To activate/deactivate an option

• Navigate to the desired menu item using the [+]-button and [-]-button.
• Briefly press the Menu Selection button.

To call up a menu item

• Navigate to the desired menu item using the [+]-button and [-]-button.
• Briefly press the Menu Selection button.

Video Output

The Calonox allows the monitor image to be output to an external screen.

• Grasp and pull the cover cap on the left end.
• Connect the USB-C cable.
• Connect the S-Video plug at the other end of the USB cable to an external screen.
• Activate Video-out.

“Fog and Rain” Mode

In this mode, the image contrast is improved (useful for cloudy, rainy, foggy, and other harsh weather conditions).

Note: In “Fog and Rain” mode, power consumption is increased, which accordingly reduces battery life.

Handheld Mode

The monitor image is designed for viewing through an optical sight with appropriate magnification in normal operation. For use as a handheld device, it can be scaled larger with this option.

Note: When used as a clip-on device, handheld mode must be deactivated.

User Profiles

It is possible to create up to 4 different profiles for riflescopes or rifles, so that the respective riflescope does not need to be readjusted. Profiles G1 & G2 are suitable for riflescopes with a large field of view. Profiles G3 & G4 are suitable for riflescopes with a smaller field of view.

• Select Gun Profile in the List Menu.
• Select the desired profile.

Note: If necessary, the position of the screen cutout must still be adjusted (see page 28).

Correcting Pixel Defects

Occasionally, pixel defects may occur in the monitor image. These can be selected and corrected in a special mode.

To call up the pixel correction mode

• Select Pixels defect correction in the List Menu.
• A crosshair appears on the monitor image to indicate the current position, and instructions for operation appear in the header.

To select a faulty pixel

• Place the crosshair exactly over the corresponding pixel.

To mark defective pixels

• Press and hold the [+]-button and [-]-button simultaneously.
• As confirmation, a counter appears in the status bar, indicating the number of marked pixels.

To save marked pixels

• Press and hold the Menu Selection button.
• A menu for saving or exiting the mode appears.

Reticle Correction

To adjust the Calonox Sight SE to the point of impact of the rifle, the display cutout (“Clip-on mode”) must be shifted to the reticle of the riflescope.

To call up the Reticle Correction

• Select Reticle correction in the List Menu.
• The reticle correction mode appears.

To perform the correction

• Shift the display cutout so that the point of impact of the rifle matches the point of impact of the riflescope and Calonox Sight SE.

Caution: Determine and correct the point of impact exclusively on the shooting range with a live shot.

Control

Displaying System Information

Various information about the device can be displayed under the menu item System information.

Reset to Factory Settings

All settings made can be deleted and reset to the factory default values. All saved user profiles are deleted in the process.

• Select Factory reset in the List Menu.

To confirm the process

• Briefly press the Menu Selection button.
• The device is reset.

To cancel the process

• Press the [-]-button.
• The List Menu appears.

Caution: After a Factory reset, it is essential to check the settings and re-zero the device on the shooting range.

Troubleshooting

If the device no longer functions as described, it can be switched off using a button combination. After switching it on again, all functions should be available as usual.

• Press and hold the [+]-button and [-]-button simultaneously for approx. 30-60 seconds.
• The device switches off.
• Switch the device on again (see page 19).

Care/Cleaning

• Special care of your Leica product is not necessary.
• Coarse dirt particles, such as sand, should be removed with a soft brush or blown off.
• Fingerprints and similar marks on objective and eyepiece lenses can be pre-cleaned with a damp cloth and wiped with a soft, clean leather or lint-free cloth.
• The device should be stored in a well-ventilated, dry, and cool place, especially to prevent fungal growth in humid climatic conditions.
• Alcohol and other chemical solutions must not be used for cleaning the optics or the housing.
• When wiping even heavily soiled lens surfaces, no great pressure should be applied. Although the coating is highly abrasion-resistant, it can still be damaged by sand or salt crystals.
• The housing should only be cleaned with a damp leather cloth. When using dry cloths, there is a risk of static charge.
• Saltwater should always be rinsed off! Dried salt crystals could otherwise damage the surfaces.
