The ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller for System x is an entry-level 6 Gbps SAS 2.0 PCI Express 2.0 RAID controller. The adapter features two internal mini-SAS connectors to drive up to 16 devices and supports the same base RAID 0, 1, and 10 feature set and drivers as the M5000 series controllers. With the attachment of the ServeRAID M1000 Advanced Feature Key, the ServeRAID M1015 offers the option of RAID 5 and SED Encryption Key management, catering to administrator cost concerns in an entry-level RAID environment. This RAID controller provides connectivity to internal direct-attach or expander-attached hard disk, solid-state, or self-encrypting drives.
Did you know?
6 Gbps SAS 2.0 technology addresses data off-load bottlenecks in direct-access storage environments, doubling the transfer rate of the previous generation. SAS 2.0 is designed for backward compatibility with 3 Gbps SAS and 3 Gbps SATA hard drives. Regardless of drive speed, 6 Gbps ServeRAID adapters deliver significant performance improvements in read and write applications compared to their 3 Gbps predecessors.
Self-encrypting drives (SEDs) are based on new technology that prevents data access without authorization. These drives adhere to the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Enterprise Security Subsystem Class specification and are National Security Agency qualified for government-grade encryption. If an SED is removed from its storage system or server, the data on it is encrypted and unusable without the appropriate security authorization.

Features
The ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller has the following features:
- Auto-resume on array rebuild or array reconstruction after loss of system power: Auto-resume uses non-volatile NVRAM to save rebuild progress during a host reboot or power failure, allowing automatic resumption from the last checkpoint. This ensures data integrity is maintained. The card supports features implementable without server reboots, benefiting applications like email and web servers by avoiding downtime.
- Online Capacity Expansion (OCE): Allows the capacity of a virtual disk to be expanded by adding new physical disks or utilizing unused space on existing disks, without requiring a reboot.
- Online RAID Level Migration: Enables migrating a virtual disk from any RAID level to any other RAID level without requiring a reboot, ensuring system availability and application functionality remain unaffected.
- Fast initialization for quick array setup
- Consistency check for background data integrity: Verifies stripe consistency in virtual disks with redundant RAID levels. It mirrors data for RAID 1 and recreates parity for RAID 5 when inconsistencies are detected. Consistency checks can be scheduled periodically.
- Extensive online configuration options: Advanced monitoring and event notification tools simplify logical volume configuration and provide alerts for current or impending errors.
- Patrol Read for media scanning and repairing: Patrol read is a background service designed to proactively discover and correct media defects (bad sectors) as disk drives age. If a bad block is found, the card's firmware uses RAID algorithms to recreate missing data and remap the sector. This task is interruptible based on controller and host operations and can be initiated, configured for continuous operation, or terminated via a management application. Patrol read can be activated manually or automatically.
- Global and dedicated Hot Spare with Revertible Hot Spare support: A hot spare rebuilds data from all virtual disks within its configured disk group. ServeRAID allows defining a physical disk as a hot spare to replace a failed drive. Hot spares can be configured as global (any physical drive) or dedicated (assigned to a specific array of the same drive type).
ServeRAID M1000 Series Advanced Feature Key Features
The ServeRAID M1000 Series Advanced Feature Key enables the following features:
- RAID levels 5 and 50
- LSI SafeStore: Support for self-encrypting drive (SED) services, including:
- Instant secure erase
- Local key management
LSI SafeStore encryption services offer instant secure erase and local key management for SEDs. This technology significantly enhances data security on disk drives, preventing unauthorized access or modification due to theft, loss, or repurposing.
- Instant secure erase permanently removes data when repurposing or decommissioning SEDs.
- SafeStore local key management provides necessary management and protection of SEDs using a simple pass phrase, security key identifier, and security key file. This can be applied to all SEDs assigned to a ServeRAID adapter, simplifying SED encryption key management for administrators.
Note: To use the SED services of the ServeRAID M1000 Series Advanced Feature Key, self-encrypting drives must be used as listed in "Supported disk drives" (not detailed in this document).
Operating environment
The ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller is supported in the following environment:
- Temperature:
- At 0-1000 m (0-3000 ft): 10-35° C (50-95° F)
- At 1000-2100 m (3000-7000 ft): 10-32° C (50-90° F)
- Relative humidity: 20-80% (non-condensing)
Warranty
One-year limited warranty. When installed on a System x server, these cards assume the system's base warranty and any warranty upgrade. Batteries are consumables and therefore are not covered under warranty.
