CW-CON DIY Wireless Driveway System
Version 1 - September 2023
1. What's in the Box
The system includes:
- 1. Sensor "Puck"
- 2. Sounder unit
- 3. Two CR123A batteries with battery clips
- 4. Two auger screws
2. Serial Number
A serial number is located on the back of the sounder, the bottom of the puck, and the product box. It includes fields for PRODUCT CODE (e.g., CON22), YEAR MADE, and SERIAL NUMBER, along with a barcode. Please have one of these numbers available when contacting support.
3. Installing Batteries / Low Battery
Install two CR123A batteries, ensuring correct polarity with the battery terminal in the puck. Push batteries in fully to make contact and snap the plastic battery holder onto the terminals. The sensor powers up automatically when batteries are installed.
Low Battery Indicator: When batteries need replacing in the sensor, the sounder's LED will remain a constant RED. Replace both batteries at the same time. Ensure the sensor brim, lid, and lid gasket are clean before screwing the lid to the housing. Do not use rechargeable batteries.
4. Test Mode for Sensor Puck
Test mode allows the sensor puck to be triggered without a vehicle, useful for testing radio range and installations. To activate:
- Press and hold the button on the sensor puck for 5 seconds. The red LED will be solid and dim during this time.
- Upon release, the LED will turn bright red, indicating test mode is activated.
- Additional transmissions will occur every 15 seconds.
- Test mode will exit automatically after 30 minutes or if the button is pressed again.
Note: A quick press and release of this button is used for pairing sensors to the sounder.
5. Testing Range
The system has a radio range of at least 350 feet, potentially over 1000 feet in line-of-sight conditions. Range can be affected by installation method and obstacles like soil, trees, buildings, and concrete.
To test range:
- Place the sounder near its final installation location.
- Put the sensor in test mode (see section 4).
- Listen for the sounder to activate. If it does not, move the sensor closer.
- Test again after installing the puck in the ground (see section 7).
- If range is insufficient, consider setting the sounder to "Repeater" mode (see sections 11 & 12).
6. Setting Sensitivity
Sensitivity adjustment is recommended only when placing the sensor in the middle of a driveway. For all other cases, use the default setting.
Sensitivity Adjustment (DIP Switches):
Setting | Detection Range (at 5 MPH) | DIP Switch Position |
---|---|---|
HIGH (Default) | 12-14 feet away | 1 & 2 in OFF position |
MEDIUM | 6-8 feet away | 1 ON & 2 OFF position |
LOW | 2-4 feet away | 1 & 2 in ON position |
Note: The highest sensitivity is achieved with DIP switches in the OFF position. DIP switch color may vary.
7. Installing Sensor Puck
Note: The sensor puck detects a vehicle going 5 MPH after it passes.
The sensor puck can be installed in three ways:
7.1. On an Object
Secure the puck to an immovable object like a post or tree using the provided screws. Ensure the lid is seated securely with no gap. Use four deck screws for fastening to a stable object.
7.2. In the Ground
Dig a hole large enough for the puck and auger screws, ensuring the puck's lid will be level with the ground surface. Secure the puck using auger screws, overlapping the bottom tabs. Pack and tamp dirt around the puck, keeping the lid clean. This prevents lawn mowers or other equipment from dislodging it.
7.3. In the Driveway
Use a 4.5-inch diameter masonry hole saw to bore a hole at least 3 inches deep, so the puck lid will be 1/2 inch below the driveway surface. Pour loop sealant into the hole, place the puck, and hold it down with weight until the sealant firms. Do not pour sealant over the puck lid or bosses to ensure access to batteries. Keep the puck lid clean.
Warning: Sensor puck and lid are keyed. Wipe sensor brim, lid, and gasket with a clean cloth and key correctly before snugging screws. Do not overtighten.
Warning: Install the sensor puck in a place that allows easy access to its batteries.

9. Sounder Introduction
The sounder unit plugs into a standard Type A North American outlet. If part of a system, one sounder comes factory-paired to one sensor. An infinite number of sounders can be paired with up to 30 sensors, and a different sound can be set for each sensor.
10. Pairing
Your system is typically paired at the factory. These instructions apply when pairing additional sounders or sensors.
Pairing Multiple Sensors to One Sounder:
- Ensure the sensor to be paired has batteries installed or is powered.
- With the sounder on, press the `[-]` and `[+]` buttons together to enter menu mode.
- Use the `[select]` button to scroll to the pairing menu and press `[select]` to enter. The sounder will announce, "Pairing menu selected. Pair sensor now."
- Assign and choose the sensor number you want to pair with (e.g., Driveway Sensor 1).
- Power up the sensor to be paired, or if already powered, press its red test mode button.
- The sounder will announce, "Enrollment, Driveway Sensor [number]. Sensor is now paired," and enter normal operation mode.
- Scroll to the sound menu and select a sound for the newly paired sensor.
Pairing a Single Sensor (Initial Setup): If a sounder has not been paired, it automatically enters pairing mode upon power-up, announcing, "There are no sensors paired, pairing enabled." Press and release the red test mode button on the sensor board. The sounder will confirm pairing.
Erasing All Paired Sensors: In menu mode, scroll to the diagnostics menu, select "Erase all sensors," and follow the prompts to confirm.
11. Sounder Interface
The sounder has three buttons: `[-]` (decrease volume), `[+]` (increase volume), and `[select]` (select option/enter menu). Pressing `[-]` and `[+]` together enters the main menu. The `[select]` button cycles through menu options. Menu mode times out after 2 minutes of inactivity. Pressing `[-]` and `[+]` together again exits the menu.
Menu Navigation:
- Press `[-]` and `[+]` together to enter Main Menu.
- Use `[select]` to scroll through menu options.
- Press `[select]` to select an option or enter a submenu.
- Press `[-]` and `[+]` together to exit the current menu or return to Main Menu.
Menu Options:
- Mode Menu: Select between Sounder Mode and Repeater Mode.
- Pairing Menu: Initiate pairing of new sensors. Stays in pairing for 30 minutes or until a sensor is paired.
- Sound Menu: Choose a specific sound for each sensor. Scroll through genres (Ambient, Christmas, Classical, Country, Jazz, Voices, Tones, Rock, Retro, Patriotic) and select a sound. Press `[-]` and `[+]` together to exit.
- LED Menu: Turn the sounder's LED ON or OFF.
- Diagnostics: Access System Report (firmware version, uptime, last trigger, signal strength, sensor counts, low battery sensors) or Erase Sensors.
Note: In menu mode, all sensor activity is ignored. To make accessing menu buttons easier, plug the sounder into an extension cord.
12. Sounder & Repeater Modes
The system operates in two modes:
- Sounder Mode: The sounder listens for sensor events and plays the assigned sound when an event is received. The green LED blinks every five seconds.
- Repeater Mode: The sounder does not produce audible alerts. Instead, it relays sensor events to another sounder or the CW-SYS Integrator. The green LED blinks every 1 second.
