San Fernando PD Enhances Public Safety with Motorola Solutions

Addressing Public Safety Challenges

The San Fernando Police Department (SFPD) faced economic pressures that challenged its ability to implement advanced public safety technologies. To meet the need of doing more with less, SFPD sought innovative solutions and funding.

The Virtual Patrol Solution

Through a partnership with Motorola Solutions and grant assistance, SFPD secured over $1 million in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (DOJ COPS) program. This funding enabled the implementation of the Virtual Patrol system, a comprehensive technology suite designed to improve public safety.

Key components of the Virtual Patrol system include:

  • Motorola's video surveillance systems
  • Mesh, Point-to-Point (PTP), and Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) wireless data networks
  • Motorola MW810 in-vehicle computers
  • Motorola MC55 eCitation solutions
  • Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology
  • OnSSI facial recognition system

Impact and Results

The integrated technology solutions have significantly enhanced SFPD's operational capabilities. Officers gain real-time access to video feeds and critical information via MW810 computers, improving situational awareness and response times. ALPR systems aid in tracking stolen vehicles and criminal activity. The SFPD reports that these advancements have contributed to a twenty-year low in crime and increased operational flexibility.

Sergeant Tony Vairo noted, "We've got to be innovative in how we approach our job so we can do more with less." Lieutenant Jeff Eley added, "When I hear the word Motorola, the first two words that come to mind are dependability and quality."
