Westcott FJ80 II Series Touchscreen Speedlight User Manual

Version: v 2.0.0 | Date: 08/07/2025

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the Westcott FJ80 II Series Touchscreen Speedlight, covering its features, operation, and specifications.

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Westcott FJ80 II Touchscreen Speedlight. The FJ80 II is a valuable addition to the FJ Series Wireless product line, which includes the FJ400 Strobe, FJ200 Strobe, FJ80 Speedlight, FJ Wireless Triggers, and FJ-XR Wireless Receiver (all sold separately). The original FJ80 was recognized as the industry's first round-head speedlight and transceiver with multi-brand compatibility and touchscreen controls. The FJ80 II represents the next generation, offering enhanced performance, improved wireless connectivity, and a superior user experience.

The FJ80 II delivers a unique lighting experience. Its round head produces a natural light output, reminiscent of sunlight, creating appealing catchlights in subjects' eyes and evenly illuminating cylindrical modifiers from center to edge. Its compact, lightweight, and performance-driven design makes it ideal for both on-camera and off-camera photography.

The FJ80 II also functions as a transceiver, enabling wireless communication with compatible FJ devices. It can receive wireless communications from the FJ80 II, FJ80, FJ-X Triggers, and Canon RT devices, allowing for flexible placement in tight spaces or for achieving desired lighting effects at various heights.

Westcott HQ is located in Maumee, OH. The support team is available Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm ET, to answer questions. Additionally, a community of Westcott users shares tips and tricks via the Westcott Lighting Community on Facebook.

We hope you enjoy using your new lighting tool and are excited to see what you create.

Thank you for your business.

Important things to know before starting...

Reviewing Firmware Files

Firmware updates are available on the Westcott Firmware Update page: https://www.fjwestcott.com/firmware. These updates often enhance performance, modify menu options, and improve the user interface of FJ Wireless products. It is crucial to review all documentation included with each firmware download to ensure all necessary preparation steps are completed before installation.

TTL ±3 Flash Exposure Compensation

The ±3 TTL Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC) applied via FJ Wireless Triggers or a host FJ80 Speedlight (when used as a transmitter) is independent of the FEC displayed on FJ Wireless lights (when used as a client). A change in FEC ±3 on FJ Wireless Triggers or a host FJ80 Speedlight will adjust the light output in TTL mode. However, a client FJ80's touchscreen will not visually reflect these FEC changes made on the trigger or host speedlight. The FJ80 Speedlight's FEC can be further adjusted by ±3 directly on the client light.

Canon Continuous Mode

When using Canon Continuous Mode with FJ Wireless Triggers and the FJ80 II Speedlight, two overlapping squares will appear on the display. In this mode, the FJ Wireless System (including the original FJ80 and FJ-X2m Trigger) defaults to Manual Mode, disabling TTL and HSS functionality. To re-enable these functions, exit Continuous Mode on your Canon camera. Note that FJ80 II and FJ-X3 devices with current firmware have removed these Manual Mode limitations.

FJ80 II Speedlight: SYNC Functions

Enabling Front or Rear Curtain Sync

Front or Rear Curtain Sync is ideal for normal scenarios requiring color consistency (5500°K ±200), full-power output (80 Ws), and fastest recycling.

  1. Press the Sync selection button repeatedly until three arrows appear in the white square at the top right of the screen.
  2. Front Curtain: Shows three arrows, with the first arrow filled in white.
  3. Rear Curtain: Shows three arrows, with the third arrow filled in white.

NOTE: Use HSS (see below) for shutter speeds above your camera's maximum normal sync speed (typically 1/200s, 1/250s, or 1/320s).

Enabling 'HSS (High-speed Sync)'

High-speed Sync is ideal for mixing ambient light and flash when proper exposure with a shallow depth of field/wide aperture requires a flash sync speed above the camera's maximum normal sync speed (typically 1/200s, 1/250s, or 1/320s). HSS allows compatible cameras to achieve flash sync speeds up to 1/8000s.

  1. Press the Sync Selection button repeatedly until an H with a lightning bolt [⚡] appears in the white square at the top of the screen.

NOTE: HSS requires an FJ-X Transmitter or FJ80 Series Speedlight.

Enabling Freeze Sync

Freeze Sync is ideal for freezing fast-moving objects lit by the speedlight. [Available in Manual Mode Only.]

  1. Press the physical Home button [?], then tap the Settings menu.
  2. Locate the Freeze Setting and tap the OFF button until ON appears.
  3. Press the Home button [?] and select the desired mode.
  4. Freeze flash is now enabled.

NOTE: Freeze flash only works in Front and Rear Curtain Sync.

Freeze Sync Flash Durations

Enabling X-Sync

X-Sync provides center pin communication with your camera. This is ideal for film cameras, medium format cameras with leaf shutter lenses, and for overcoming speed drive limitations with advanced camera systems. Enabling X-Sync can also be useful with cameras not fully compatible with the FJ System.

IMPORTANT: When X-Sync is activated, High-Speed Sync and TTL features will be automatically disabled.

IMPORTANT: If a camera's hot shoe lacks a center pin, it cannot communicate with the FJ80II when X-Sync is enabled.

  1. Press the physical Home button [?], then tap the Settings menu.
  2. Locate the X-Sync option and tap the OFF button until ON appears.
  3. Press the physical Home button [?] and select HOST mode.

NOTE: The SYNC icon above the Selection Control Up Arrow on the HOST screen can no longer be toggled to other SYNC functions. Disable X-Sync in the Settings menu to re-enable High-Speed Sync & TTL functionality.

NOTE: Enabling X-Sync also restricts MODE operations to MANUAL (M) or SLEEP (SLP).

FJ80 II Speedlight: STDBY (Standby Control)

Enabling and disabling Standby mode allows immediate REMOVAL of communication between a camera and the FJ80 II Speedlight without powering down the speedlight.

NOTE: STDBY functionality differs from HOST Speedlight control as it stops all communication with the camera. Tapping the speedlight icon only prevents the on-camera HOST speedlight from firing while allowing additional off-camera FJ Wireless lights assigned to Group A to remain active.

Activating Standby

  1. Double-tap the gray STDBY button until it turns white and STDBY illuminates green.
  2. Press the OK button.
  3. The STDBY button will illuminate green with white letters when enabled.

FJ80 II Battery: Performance and Care

FJ80 II Battery Performance

The FJ80 II Lithium-Polymer Battery (11.1V 17.76Wh, 1600mAh) is capable of 500+ full-power flashes with the modeling lamp disabled and screen brightness set to Minimum Brightness (1).

FJ80 II Charging & Life Expectancy

The average charge time is ~2 hours from complete discharge. The FJ80 Lithium-Polymer Battery (11.1V 17.76Wh, 1600mAh) will achieve at least 300 full charge cycles (@80% after 300). Continued usage beyond the expected charge cycles will result in diminished performance and the ability to hold a charge. Avoid charging and using the battery outside of the stated operating temperatures (14~122°F / -10°~50°C) as it will affect the overall performance of the battery and speedlight. Preserve the battery's longevity by storing at roughly ~40% capacity at room temperature in a dry environment and recharge to this capacity at least once every three months when not being used.
