2. SETTING UP AND RUNNING 1. How to fix the motor
(Fig. 1)
As shown in Fig. 1, it is the measure· me nl of the location of constant run ning induction motor, made by Brother. (4 pole. 1.440/ 1,720 rpm, 250W). If you purchased this machine as head only. please use with the consta nt run ni ng induc ti on motor of 4 pole. 250W or more wattage a nd in this case, the motor mount ing brack et is different from our Brother motor, thus, please fo llow the instruction below :

Firstl y, put the two speed pulley wh ic h is supplied with the mach ine head to the motor sha ft and sel
the position apart 357mm from the cen tre of the machine. Set the position apart 107.5mm from the
edge of the table top to the end of pulley as shown in F ig 2. Drill the hol es at the correct position.
Secondly , put the motor to table top. Al that t ime, please make sure to insert the washers bet ween
t abl e t op a nd motor mount ing brack e t a nd faste n sec urely w ith set bol ts .
The correct motor rota t ion is counter clockwise \·i ewed fro m t he pulley side a nd if not. plea se gel
the correc t rota ti on.
2. Setting the machine head on table top
I ) Set t he base.
Put the base on t he table lop as pe r Fig . 4 and put tw o
belts as shown in Fig . 3. In the di st rict o f 50 H z, use
with 42" for larger diam eter pulle y and 43" for smaller
diameter pull ey . In the di str ict of 60 Hz, use with bot h
-l l ''s.
At t he prope r tension of t\\'O be lls, fasten the base with
wood screws to tab le lop securely.

Un less you may put the position correct ly, it causes lo lessen the life o f belts.
2) Put t he hinges in the bed a nd place the m achine head on the base.
3) Put the tension pulley as shown in Fig. 5.
4) Put the head rest.
5) A s shown in F ig. 6, connect t he oil tubes with tube joint.
Then, put the fl at belt between base pulley and tension pull ey as shown in Fig . 5.

6) Put the bobbin winder assem bly as per Fig. 7. At that time, please make sure to be right angl e
between belt and pulle y. This is because you can get th e even bobbin wind ing when you may wind
the bobbin threads on bobbin ac tually. The fine adjustment ca n be clone a t the positi on of t hread
guide.
7) Put the belt cover with flat head sc rews.
8) Put the flat belt t o the machine pulley and push the tension lever and release it at the position in
line "·ith indicator.

9) All the above procedures a re comple ted. then pour oil into the oil rese rvoi r and oil to the sliding
parts taking off the face plate, s ide cover and be lt cover. Please also make su re to \\·ipc out a ll

10) Oili n){ into oil reser voi r. This model is constructed that oil reservot r is a part of bed plate which is seen underneath the tabl e top. Oili ng is made as per Fig. 6 a nd pour oil onto the oil fil ter. Pour oil until the upper li ne of oil gauge windO\\'. Chec k in the oil gauge \\'indo\\' before starting jobs \\'hethcr proper oil is conta ined or not and in case that oil may sho\\' unde r the lower line, fu lfil oil properl y.
II) Checking the lubricating system. Turn the oil flo\\' regulating \'ah·e on the right side of the bed \\'ith a sc rewdri\·er so that when the motor is S\\'itched on oi l may be visible in the pipe in the oil ga uge window in the lop CO\·er. (Fig. 11 )

3 . HOW TO USE THE MACHINE
1. Cleaning up
It is absolutely necessary to maintain the hook and race cleaning up in order lo get the bea utiful buttonhole stitches. Please remove a ll the dusts and li nts to get the constant beautiful stitches. I) Remove all the dusts or lints whi ch will be accumu lated betwee n needle plate a nd hook al least once a day a fter job finish. 2) Remove all the dusts or lints \\'hic h will be accumu lated on the presser fool and thread trimming
mechanism whenever you ma y recognize the necessity.
2. Needle and its setting
i\ lodel LH 4 -B 814 is used with DP X 5 needle. Use the need le as t hin as possible. It must be matching the thickness of th read and needle eye so that t he thread may pass through the needle eye smooth ly. In general. for purl stitch. the recomme nded needle size is upto ::II. \\·hereas for whip stitc h. upto ;:9. T o set the need le to the needle bar, please refer to Fig. 12. Short groove in front of you and fasten the need le set screw confirming that the needle comes a ll the way upto t he needle bar hole. *The recommended ang le of the need les is a bit left direc tion agai nst the centre of needl e ba r. Al
this set ting posi tion, it is effec tive to eliminate skip s ti tches.
3. Selection of thread and threading
For good qua li ty buttonholes. use for upper thread with onl y high grade threads. prefe rably cotton threads in sixe of ~40-#60, 4-6 ply thread, left hand t wisted, uniform in d iameter without knot or s lubs. This model LH 4 -B 814 can be sewn w ith the syntheti c threads as well as cotton threads. Ri ght hand twisted thread or poor quality threads ca use thread breakage which drop the productivity. T he refore, please make sure to use h igh g rade threads lo use with th is machine. Use for lower thread with high g rade t hreads as well in s ize of # 50-# 100.

For lower thread. it is recommended to use with ±:: 50· ::: I00 cotton thread. but it can be assured to get sewing perform· ance with synthetic threads as well. To wind the thread in bobbin, please refer to Fig. 13. 'vVind 4-5 times around the empty bobbin counter clockwise. and push t he lever to start to wind. When sufficient amount of threads will be wound. the bobbin winder will stop automatically. The amount of threads to be wound is adjusted by t he screw.

6. Regulati ng lower thread tens ion

It can be regulated the lower t hread tension by adjusting t he screw A. In case that ~·ou may tighten the sc re w A. t he tension will be st ronger. and ,·ice ,·ersa. The correct te ns ion of lo wer thread is that when you pick the thread encl. the bobbi n wi ll s lowly go down by its own ,,·eight as pe r Figs 15. 16. !'lease be careful not to ha,·e stronger tension in order to a\·oicl thread brea kage.

7 . Inserting bobbin case into hook
Please refer t o Fig. I/ to insert the bobbin case into hook. At that time. please make sure to pull the thread e nd toward you in order to a void thread jamming.
8 . Runn ing
Whe n you will slarl the ma.chine. please mak e sure to be norma l stop position, t ha t is, t he stopper is engaged in the stopper cam. Unl ess you may be acquainted with this machine. please refrain the machine from starting by the motor. Fig 19. The best way to comprehend the machine mechanism thoroughly, please start the machine by hand dri ving the pulley slow ly to observe the respective moveme nts. At first. remove thread , need le, bobbin case and culler then start to run.
\\"ith left treadle pedal. you can lift the presser foot and with right treadle pedal. you can start the
mac hine.
This mac hine is designed with sa fely devi ce, ,,·hich prevents the machine from sta rt ing whi le the
presser foot is lifted and prevents the presser foot from lifting up while mach ine runs. Therefo re. if
you depresseright treadle pedal on the hal f way of left pedal engagement. the machine will not start
to run , and left treadle pedal will not engage in lifting presser foot whi le machine is runn ing. (NOTE) Please be ca reful that when machi ne is going to slop if you w ill depress left t readle pedal.

With th is model, Ll-1 4 -B 814 in case of (1) the cutter moveme nt will be locked automatically and in case of (2). as t he c utter will be engaged in, please depress the cutter slop lever until the machine slops automatically. 'vVith th is ste p, it e nsures to prevent the materi als from damage a nd you ca n have ma chine resta rt. Fig 18.

10 . Emergency stop
It is essential to slop the machine instantaneo us ly e\·en if the machine runs when the needle breaks or thread jamming in lhc hook. This prevents the machi ne and materials from damage. In this case, depress dmm the emergency slop lever by hand and release il. (Thi s operati on of the emergency stop lever means t hat machine speed will be reduced to 800 rpm by pressing the lever and \\"ill be reduced to zero by releasi ng the lever.)

11 . Operating manual f eeding handle
\\"hen you wi ll use the emergency stop lever or when the thread breakage causes dur ing its operati on, you wou ld like to restart the machine just before the defecti ve stitch. At that time. tu rn the feed cam clockwise by means of t his manual feeding handle al your desired position. Fig 19. (l\O TE) 1. At the repairing of this machine. on t he condi tion that the stop cam may be off from
stopper which is on the co ndi tion of depressi.ng the right treadle pedal. after turni ng the pulley by hand. t here causes sometimes the cutter being operated to drop at the machine starting to run. This can be avoided by starting the machine from norma l stop positi on o r depressing the cutter stop lever as shown in Fig. 18. 2. The manual feeding handle should be used when the need le is apart from the materia ls. It is safe to operate the manual feed ing handle at t hat position that stop cam stops at the correct angle.
4. ADJUSTMENT
1. Regulating upper thread tension
This model LH 4-B814 has t\\"O upper thread tension regulators. As shown in Fig. 12. the upper tension regu lator plays a role of regulating the upper thread tension on t he bar tack ing on both ends of buttonholes and the lower tens ion regula tor on the parallel zigzag tension. a) In case of purl stitch
1) Regulating the upper tens ion regul ator, pl ease obtain the tension so as to be whip sti tch on the part of bar tacking.
2) Regul ati ng the lower tension regula tor, please obtain t he tension so as to be stra ight raised stitch on the pa rt of zigzag in para llel. The stronger the tension , the more beaut iful t he seams. H owever, there exists t he li mit and if it will exceed the limit, it causes the upper thread breakage, so please be careful to obtain the proper tension.
b) In case of wh ip stitch 1) Tighten the tension of bobbin case and obtain the stronger tension in comparison with the tension for purl stitch. 2) Loosen the tension on lower tension regulator properly.
(NOTE) On whip stitch, same threads on upper and lower are recommendable.

2. Regulating the thread take-up spring
I
T hi ~ model Ll l-I·BH14 feature~ that the th read take-up spring
p~ay~ two roles. one for regulating the tension and the other
for percei,·ing the uppe r thread breakage as well. Therefore.
the amount of movement of tak e-up spring is recommend able
in the range of;) 7mm for cotton thread and 2 - 3mm for
sy nthetic thread. !'lease refer to Fig. 20.

The thread on lower tensi on regulator can be released by the cam of tensi on releaser. This adj ustment is obtained by loosening t he adj usting screw as shown in Fig. 44 and moving tension release pin to the dir ecti on indicated arrow shown in Fig. 43 and set the tensi on discs to be lmm gap. And the timing of tension release can be adjusted by the posi tion of cam of thread tension r elease in the feed cam to be calicr or later.

(1) Thi s machine features automatic lubrication to all sl iding par ts and t he adjustment of oiling to all t hose par ts except to hoo k can be cl one by the adjusting sere\\. located in the right of bed. T his can be clone by sere\\. clri\·er. and i f you will turn clock wise. t he oiI feeds less and \·ice versa . Please make sure to adjust to lubricate to all necessar y points with proper amount of oil feeding in order to avoid oil leakage clue to much oil or sei zing up clue to less oil.
(2) Adjust ing oiling to hook can be done by moving the screw located in front of machine. Less oil to t he hook i s recom· mendable. (Fig. 45)
