Introduction and Application

The iSMA CONTROLLI MVE5xx-65 series actuators are flexible electromechanical devices designed for controlling two and three-way globe valves. They are suitable for various applications including heating and cooling systems, Air Handling Units (AHUs), district heating plants, and industrial temperature control systems.

These actuators offer precise control via proportional (modulating) signals or increase/decrease (floating) signals. Key features include a robust IP65 rating for harsh environments, a fine resolution of 500 steps for accurate fluid control, and intelligent self-calibration capabilities. The actuators also provide alarm functionality and status feedback through integrated GREEN and RED LEDs.

Operation

The actuator translates control signals from a controller into precise valve positions. It utilizes a modern brushless DC motor coupled with a gear train and a worm gear-screw jack mechanism for accurate, repeatable linear movements.

Control Signal Types:

Manual Override:

A manual operation handle allows direct control of the actuator. Engaging the handle cuts power to the motor, enabling manual positioning of the valve. The GREEN and RED LEDs are illuminated when manual override is active. The handle can also be used for DIP switch settings or alarm resets. The actuator is shipped with the manual override engaged (lowered).

Feedback Position:

The actuator provides a 2-10Vdc position feedback signal.

Calibration:

The actuator features both automatic and manual stroke calibration (controlled by DIP switch 7 ⚙️). Automatic calibration is enabled by default from the factory. Manual calibration is recommended for maintenance or specific alarm functions.

Diagnostics and Alarms

The MVE5xx-65 series includes a self-diagnostic algorithm to detect faulty conditions such as stroke calibration issues, unexpected stalls, or voltage supply problems. Faults are indicated by LED behavior (RED and GREEN) on the electronic board. Refer to the Diagnostic - Alarm Functions table for detailed error codes and troubleshooting.

Assembly and Mounting

The actuator can be mounted in any orientation, but never upside down. If the fluid temperature exceeds 120°C, the actuator must be mounted at a 45° angle. The assembly process involves positioning the valve stem, sliding the actuator onto the valve neck, aligning the screw jack with the valve spindle's square nut, and securing the brace.
