HALO RL-DM Night Light Downlight: Dimming Guide and Step-down Transformer Application Note
Introduction
The HALO RL-DM Night Light LED Series offers continuous dimming capabilities using reverse or forward phase cut dimmers. This document provides a guide to dimmer compatibility and application notes for step-down transformers.
Available models include: RL4DM Night Light (RL4069NLWHDMR) and RL6DM Night Light (RL6069NLWHDMR).
Phase Control Dimming Diagram Description: Illustrates a typical setup where 120V AC dimmed power from a dimmer or switch is supplied to Halo LED Downlights. The input power is shown as 120V AC (2-wire + Ground typical).

Dimmer Notes
- Start time is measured at the lowest dimmer setting.
- Some LED dimmers feature a "rapid start" design that provides a momentary power boost for LED and CFL lamps during start-up. This boost can sometimes cause a momentary flash of the LED lighting, especially at low dimmer settings. EATON dimmers (Devine DAL06P, Accell AAL06P, and Trace TAL06P) offer adjustment capabilities for this "rapid start" feature. Refer to Eaton's product specifications for more details.

Step-down Transformers
Application Note: H277, H347, and H347200 step-down transformers are qualified to drive multiple HALO LED fixtures on a single circuit in Non-IC construction. It is not recommended to install these transformers with individual LED fixtures on circuits with multiple LED loads due to potential inductive currents causing reactive power (VARS) rather than real power (WATTS). If transformers are used individually per fixture on a single circuit, the circuit must be sized for lower power factor and increased apparent power. These transformers are UL/cUL listed for use with HALO recessed housings (H750T, H750TCP, H7T, H7TNB, H7RT).
H277 (300VA)
Steps 277V line voltage down to 120V. Attaches to the knockout on the first fixture's junction box in a circuit. Rated at 300VA. UL recognized Component for Halo Non-IC housings.
Transformer Load - H277 (300VA):
- Full loading consumes a maximum of 16W.
- On the secondary (120V) side: consumes 6.5W in "OFF" mode and 16W in "ON" mode (full loading).
- On the primary (277V) side: consumes a maximum of 16W in "ON" mode (full loading). Use of a dimmer on the primary side is not recommended.
H277 Transformer Diagram Description: Shows a 277V input to a transformer, stepping down to 120V for LED fixtures. Includes dimensions: 2-3/16" [56mm] height, 4-3/16" [106mm] width.
H347 (75VA) and H347200 (200VA)
Steps 347V line voltage down to 120V. Attaches to the knockout on the first fixture's junction box in a circuit. H347 is rated at 75VA, and H347200 is rated at 200VA. CSA/UL Listed Component for Halo Non-IC housings.
Transformer Load - H347 (75VA):
- Full loading consumes a maximum of 15W.
- On the secondary (120V) side: consumes 2.5W in "OFF" mode and 15W in "ON" mode (full loading).
- On the primary (347V) side: consumes a maximum of 15W in "ON" mode (full loading). Use of a dimmer on the primary side is not recommended.
Transformer Load - H347200 (200VA):
- Full loading on the 120V side consumes a maximum of 28W.
- On the secondary (120V) side: consumes 9.2W in "OFF" mode and 28W in "ON" mode (full loading).
- On the primary (347V) side: consumes a maximum of 28W in "ON" mode (full loading).
- When a switch is on the primary (277V) side: consumes a maximum of 12W in "ON" mode (full loading). Use of a dimmer on the primary side is not recommended.
