The Mercedes-Benz W126 is a series of S-Class automobiles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz between 1979 and 1992. Premiering in September 1979 as the successor to the W116 line, the W126 was the second generation to officially bear the prestigious 'Sonderklasse' (special class) designation. It introduced significant safety innovations, including the first seatbelt pretensioners.

The W126 was formally introduced at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (International Motor Show, IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1979. The initial lineup featured seven models in standard (SE, SD) and long (SEL, SDL) wheelbase sedan body styles: the 280 SE/SEL, 380 SE/SEL, 500 SE/SEL, and 300 SD. The long-wheelbase variants were technically codenamed V126. In 1981, the coupé version C126 (SEC) premiered at the IAA with the 500 SEC model. Wheels Magazine selected the W126 model 380 SE as its Car of the Year in 1981.

A facelift in 1985 introduced revised bumpers, body side protection mouldings, and updated wheel designs. The 14-inch 'Bundt' rims were replaced with 15-slot flat-faced silver painted alloy rims, which became characteristic of the Mercedes-Benz line into the early 1990s.

Novel luxury features and options included advanced safety, comfort, and technological elements that were significant in the 1980s. The harmonious integration of these features, combined with renowned durability, contributed to the W126's appeal.
