Updating AquaControl™ Firmware on Your Ashly mXa-1502

The Ashly mXa-1502 uses embedded programs, known as firmware. Ashly periodically releases new firmware updates to improve operation or add features. These updates can typically be deployed in the field by the system administrator.

It is important to review the firmware revision history to determine if an update adds value to your installation. While firmware updates are usually routine, there is a low risk that it can disable the Ashly device, as explained below.

Associated Risk When Updating

If power to the Ashly mXa-1502 device is interrupted during the update procedure, there is a risk of disabling the device. Once the firmware update procedure begins, any interruption can leave the Ashly device in a "crippled" state. This occurs because the firmware update routine first erases the old firmware, then writes the new firmware code. If an interruption happens during this process, the Ashly device can be left without a valid program to function or communicate with a computer, tablet, or mobile device. In such cases, the mXa-1502 may need to be returned to the Ashly Service Department to restore the factory flash program.

AquaControl™ Firmware Update Process

  1. Step 1: Log into the mXa-1502 AquaControl™ software using an Admin role level account. The login interface displays fields for 'User ID' (pre-filled with 'admin'), 'Password', a 'Remember me' checkbox, and a 'Log In' button.

  2. Step 2: (Optional but highly recommended) Navigate to the 'Settings' -> 'General Settings' page. Click or press the 'Export Settings' button to back up all settings, presets, events, and accounts to a file on the computer or mobile device you are using to access AquaControl™.

  3. Step 3: On the 'Settings' -> 'General Settings' page, click or press the 'Update' button to install a new firmware update file on the mXa-1502. The 'General settings' tab displays device details: 'Device' (mXa-1502), 'Inputs' (8 Mic/Line Inputs, 4 Stereo Inputs), 'Outputs' (2 Amplifier Outputs, 2 Auxiliary Line Outputs), 'Firmware' (version 1.0.18 with an 'Update' button), 'Hardware Revision' (1.0.0), 'Device Name', 'Group', and a 'Notes' text area. Buttons for 'Import Settings' and 'Export Settings' are also present. The 'Real Time Clock' section offers options for 'Automatic Date/Time' (requires internet connection) and 'Manual Date/Time'.

  4. Step 4: Click or press '+Firmware File' to locate the new firmware file to be installed. The file must be downloaded from the Ashly Audio website to your computer or mobile device. After selecting the file, click or press 'Install Update' to begin the process. The firmware file will be transferred to the mXa-1502 and then checked for completeness and validity. If the file is corrupt or invalid, an error message will appear, and the firmware update process will be cancelled. If the file is valid, the update process will proceed. It is crucial that power is not interrupted to the mXa-1502 at this point (refer to the 'Associated Risk When Updating' section).
