Quick Start Guide
Welcome to your new Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt. This guide will help you install and set up your lock quickly and easily.
Parts Identification
The following components are included:
- Backup Key: For manual key access.
- Touchscreen Assembly: The exterior unit with the keypad and touchscreen.
- Bolt: The deadbolt mechanism that extends into the door frame.
- Backplate: The interior mounting plate.
- Battery Cover: Covers the battery compartment on the inside assembly.
- Inside Assembly: The interior unit containing the battery compartment and thumbturn.
- Strike and Reinforcement Plate: The metal plate installed on the door frame to receive the bolt. An optional reinforcement plate is included for enhanced security.
- Reinforcement Strike: An alternative strike plate for specific door frame types.
- Reinforcement Screws: Longer screws for securing the strike and reinforcement plate.
- Inside Assembly Screws: Screws to attach the inside assembly.
- Backplate Screws: Screws to secure the backplate.
- Bolt/Strike Screws: Screws to attach the bolt and strike.
Touchscreen Features
The touchscreen assembly includes several indicators and buttons:
- Communication Icon (?): Flashes when the lock is connecting to WiFi to check for updates.
- Low Battery Icon (?): Flashes after a code is entered when the battery is low. It is solid when the battery is critical, and the lock will not operate without new batteries.
- Programming and Input LED: Displays amber when using manual programming mode.
- Home Button and Checkmark Icon (✔️): Turns on the keypad backlight, starts the WiFi connection process, flashes when code entry is correct, and flashes when manual programming is successful.
- Lock Button and "X" Icon (❌): Locks the lock. Turns on the keypad backlight if the lock is locked. "X" flashes for a wrong user code.
Installation Guide
Tools Required: Phillips screwdriver. Do not use a power drill.
Step 1: Remove Existing Lock
Remove the entire deadbolt, including the bolt. You may also want to remove the strike. A standard Schlage deadbolt is shown. Check with your specific deadbolt manufacturer if you need help.

Step 2: Install the Bolt
You may have to adjust your bolt length. Ensure the slot in the bolt is centered in the hole. Make sure the word "TOP" is facing up. Twist the faceplate to extend the bolt to the correct length (up to 2 3/4 inches).

Step 3: Install the Strike into the Door Frame
Install the strike into the door frame. If you have a window next to your door, you may not be able to use the longer wood screws to install the strike. Install the strike reinforcer for enhanced security.

Step 4: Install the Touchscreen
Route the cable through the door BELOW the bolt. Align the tailpiece as shown and push the touchscreen onto the door. The bump on the tailpiece aligns with the slot in the bolt.

If the through hole seems too small or the tailpiece is not installing correctly, you may need to remove the spacer. Visit alle.co/encode.
Step 5: Install the Backplate
Route the cable under the bolt and through the hole on the bottom of the backplate. Secure the backplate with screws. Make sure the outside touchscreen is straight before tightening screws all the way.

Step 6: Connect the Cable
Tuck the cable and connector in the space above the spindle.

Step 7: Secure the Lock to the Door
Secure the lock to the door. If the bump on the tailpiece doesn't align with the slot in the back of the inside assembly, make sure your thumbturn is vertical (up and down). The bump on the tailpiece aligns with the slot in the back of the inside assembly.

Step 8: Install Batteries and Slide the Cover On
Pull out the battery holder. Install batteries into the holder. Reinstall the battery holder, turning it around so the batteries face the door. Slide the battery cover on.

Step 9: Set Up and Test Your Lock
Your lock is now installed! You still need to set it up to use it.
Set up your lock:
- Open your door!
- Enter one of the two default user codes.
- Your lock will enter a setup routine. When the bolt stops moving, setup is complete.
Final test:
- Close your door.
- Extend and retract the bolt using the inside thumbturn.
- Make sure the bolt retracts smoothly.
- Open your door.
- Extend the bolt using the inside thumbturn.
- Now enter a user code at the touchscreen.

Lock and Unlock
To lock your door: Just tap the [lock-icon] lock icon. You can also lock your door from the inside by turning the thumbturn toward the door edge.
To unlock your door: Enter a user code. You can also unlock your door from the inside by turning the thumbturn away from the door edge.
After Installation
Now that your lock is installed, you can use a smart home system to lock and unlock your door from anywhere and add user codes for guests and household members.

Important Information
Backup Codes: These are your backup codes. You will need these codes if you ever factory default reset your lock. Keep these safe!
