NightRiding Ridingabicycleatnightismuchmoredangerousthanridingduringtheday.Acyclistisvery difficultformotoristsandpedestrianstosee.Therefore,childrenshouldneverrideatdawn, duskoratnight.Adultswhochoosetoacceptthegreatlyincreasedriskofridingatdawn, duskoratnightneedtotakeextracarebothridingandchoosingspecializedequipment whichhelpsreducethatrisk.Consultyourlocalbicycleshopaboutnightridingsafety equipment. WARNING:Reflectorsarenotasubstituteforrequiredlights.Ridingatdawn,at dusk,atnightoratothertimesofpoorvisibilitywithoutanadequatebicyclelighting systemandwithoutreflectorsisdangerousandmayresultinseriousinjuryordeath. WARNING:Donotremovethefrontorrearreflectorsorreflectorbracketsfromyour bicycle.Theyareanintegralpartofthebicycle'ssafetysystem.Removingthe reflectorsreducesyourvisibilitytoothersusingtheroadway.Beingstruckbyother vehiclesmayresultinseriousinjuryordeath. Frame&Fork: · Checkthattheframeandforkarenotbent,broken,orcracked. · Ifeitherarefoundtobebent,broken,orcracked,theyshouldbe replaced. Wheels&Tires: · Ensuretiresareinflatedtowithintherecommendedrangeas displayedonthetiresidewall. · Ensuretireshavetreadandhavenobulgesorexcessivewear. · Ensurerimsruntrueandhavenoobviouswobblesorkinks. · Ensureallwheelspokesaretightandnotbroken. · Checkthataxlenutsaretight. · Donotoverinflate. Chain: · Ensurechainisoiled,cleanandrunssmoothly. · Extracareisrequiredinwetordustyconditions. · Onbicyclesequippedwithcoasterbrakes,checkforproperchain tension. · Checktomakesureyourchainguardistightandnottouchingthe crankorchain. Bearings: · Ensureallbearingsarelubricated,runfreelyanddisplaynoexcess movement,grindingorrattling. · Checkheadset,wheelbearings,pedalbearingsandbottom bracketbearings. Handlebars: · Ensurehandlebarandstemarecorrectlyadjustedandtightened, andallowpropersteering. · Ensurethatthehandlebarsaresetcorrectlyinrelationtotheforks andthedirectionoftravel. ASSEMBLY GettingStarted Opentheboxandcheckthatallpartsarepresent. Westronglyrecommendreadingtheuserguidebeforebeginning.Ifyouaren'tcomfortable withtheassembly,youshouldbringyourbiketoyourlocalbikeshoptohaveaqualified mechanicputittogetherforyou.Pleaseensureyouneedtoreadthisentireuserguide beforeyourideorletanyoneelserideit. CAUTION:Asyouassemblethebike,it'sagoodideatoplacealittlewhitegrease oranti-seizecompoundontheseatpost,stemandthreadsoftheboltstoprevent rusting. Step1:Aligningtheforks · Theframe,handlebars,frontwheel,andothercomponentsareattachedwithzipties. Li everythingoutinonepiece,andsetitdown,withthechainfacingupwards. · Removethezipties,andremoveanypaddingorpackaging. · First,alignthefork.Rotateit,toensureitmovesfreelywithoutbinding(Figure1),making suretheforkispointingintherightdirection,withtheforkbladesfacingforward (Figure2). Figure1 Figure2 Step2:Installingthewheels · Ensurethebrakesarelooseenoughtoallowthewheeltopassthroughthebrakepads easily. · Placewheelintoforkdropouts. · Installretainingwasherswithraisedlippointedtowardsthefork,andinsertintothe smallholeoftheforkblade(Figure3). · Installaxlenutandsecurelytighten.Ensurethewheeliscenteredbetweenthefork blades(Figure4). · Spinthewheeltomakesurethatitiscenteredandclearsthebrakeshoes.Tightenthe brakesifnecessary. · Ifthewheelisoutofalignmentyouwillneedtorealignthewheel.Contactyourlocal bicycleshoptohelprealignthewheels. WARNING:Failuretoobeythesestepscanallowthefrontwheeltoloosenor dislodgewhileriding.Thiscancauseinjuryordeathtotheriderortoothers. Step3:Handlebar/Stem Insertthestemandhandlebarassemblyintothefork,makingsurethestemwedgeisloose. Ensurethecablesarenottangledandtracksmoothlyoneithersideofthestem. Thestemshouldbepointingtowardsthefrontofthebike,alignedwiththefronttire(Figure5). Dependingonthetypeofbolt,tightenthestemboltwith5,or6mmAllenwrench(Figure6). Minimuminsertion mark Figure7 Step4:Brakes A erinstallingthefrontwheel,re-connectthefrontbrakebysqueezingthearmstogether, andslidingthecableguidebackintothecarrier(Figures8&9). r Figure8 Figure9 WARNING:Whenassemblingoradjustingthebrakes,makesurethecableanchor nutistight(Figure9).Failuretosecurelytightenthenutcouldresultinbrakefailure andpersonalinjury. TestingBrakeFunctions Totestthefunctionofthefronthandbrake,li thefrontofthebikeandspinthewheel.The wheelshouldnotrubonthebrakepads.Next,squeezethebrakeleverandtakenoteofthe brakepadscontactingthesideofthewheel.Thepadsshouldcontacttherimonbothsides atthesametime.Finally,holdthebrakeleverfirmandtrytomovethebikeforward.The brakeshouldholdwellenoughtokeepthewheelfrommoving.Repeatthesestepsforthe rearwheel. Step5:Attachingthepedals Beforeyourfirstride,pleasedothefollowingchecksandensureyourpedalsareattached correctly. · Thereisarightsidepedalmarked"R"andale sidepedalmarked"L" · Pedalmarked"R"hasrighthandthreads.Tighteninaclockwisedirection. · Pedalmarked"L"hasle handthreads.Tighteninacounterclockwisedirection (Figure10). · A erputtingsomewhitegreaseonthethreadsofthepedal,placethepedalintothe crank,anduseyourfingerstogetitstarted.Threadingitincanbetricky,somakesure todoitcorrectly.Thetopofthethreadwillrotatetowardsthefrontofthebiketotighten thepedals. · Oncefingertightened,usea15mmopen-endedspannertotorquethemdown.They areproperlytightenedwhenthepedalspindle,whichistheaxlethatthepedalplatform spinsaround,beginstobiteintothemetalonthecrank. Figure10 WARNING:Incorrectinstallmentofpedalsintoacrankarmwillcauseirreparable damage.Unlesstheshoulderofthepedalspindleistighttothefaceofthecrank arm,thepedalmaybackoutcausingseriousinjuryordeath.Makeittightsothe shoulderisincompletecontactwiththesurfaceofthecrankarm. Step6:Installingtherearseatreflector · Loosenthescrewontheclampofthereflectoruntilyoucanslidethereflectoroverthe seatpost. · Oncethereflectorisontheseatpost,inserttheseatpostbackintotheseattube. · Positionthereflectorsothatitisperpendiculartotheground,andmoveituponthe seatpostuntilitcanbeseenabovethetirewhenviewingthebikefromtherear (Figure11). · Removetheseatpostfromtheseattube. Figure11 Step7:Installingtheseat · Addsomewhitegreasetotheinsideoftheseattube,andslidetheseatpostintothe bicycle. · Makesurethattheminimuminsertionmarkiscompletelycoveredandthattheseatis pointingforwardinalignmentwiththebicycle(Figures12&13). Figure12 Figure13 TestingHandlebarandStemTightness(a ercompleteassembly). Totestthetightnessofthestem,straddlethefrontwheelbetweenyourlegstightly(Figure 14).Trytoturnthehandlebarbackandforth.Thehandlebarshouldnotslipormove independentlyofthefrontwheelatall.Ifthehandlebardoesmove,re-alignthestemwith thefrontwheelandtightenthestembolt.Re-testtomakesurethestemissecurewiththe sameprocess. Totestthetightnessofthehandlebar,holdthebikestationaryandtrytorotatetheendsof thehandlebarupanddownormovethebarforwardandback.Ifthehandlebarmoves, loosenthehandlebarclampnutorboltsevenlytore-positionandthenre-tighten.Repeat thetestuntilthebarswillnotmove. Step10:Installingtrainingwheels Removethenutandattachthetrainingwheelstothebike.Usethemulti-functionwrenchto re-installandtightenthepreviouslyremovednut(Figure17). RemovingandInstallingBolt-onWheels RemovingBolt-onFrontWheel: 1. Openupthebrakeshoes. 2. Witha15mmboxwrenchora6inchadjustablewrench,loosenthe2axlenuts. 3. Ifyourfrontforkhasaclip-ontypesecondaryretentiondevice,disengageitandgoto Step4.Ifyourfrontforkhasanintegralsecondaryretentiondevice,loosentheaxlenuts aboutsixfullturns;thengotoStep4. 4. Raisethefrontwheelafewinchesoffthegroundandtapthetopofthewheelwiththe palmofyourhandtoknockthewheeloutoftheforkends. InstallingaBolt-OnFrontWheel: 1. Withthesteeringforkfacingforward,insertthewheelbetweentheforkbladessothat theaxlesitsfirmlyatthetopoftheslotswhichareatthetipsoftheforkblades.The axlenutwashersshouldbeontheoutside,betweentheforkbladeandtheaxlenut.If yourbikehasaclip-ontypesecondaryretentiondevice,engageit. 2. Whilepushingthewheelfirmlytothetopoftheslotsintheforkdropouts,andatthe sametimecenteringthewheelriminthefork,usea6inchadjustablewrenchora15mm boxwrenchtotightentheaxlenutssecurely. 3. Closethebrakeshoes;thenspinthewheeltomakesurethatitiscenteredintheframe andclearsthebrakeshoes. RemovingaBolt-OnRearWheel: 1. Opentherearbrakeshoes. 2. Shi therearderailleurtohighgear(thesmallestrearsprocket)andpullthederailleur bodybackwithyourrighthand. 3. Witha15mmboxwrenchorasixinchadjustablewrench,loosenthe2axlenuts. 4. Li therearwheeloffthegroundafewinches,andwiththederailleurstillpulledback, pushthewheelforwardanddownuntilitcomesoutofthereardropouts. InstallingaBolt-OnRearWheel: 1. Shi therearderailleurtoitsoutermostpositionandpullthederailleurbodybackwith yourrighthand. 2. Putthechainontothesmallestsprocket.Then,insertthewheelintotheframedropouts andpullitallthewayintothedropouts.Theaxlenutwashersshouldnotbeonthe outside,betweentheframeandtheaxlenuts. 3. Tightentheaxlenutssecurely,usinga6inchadjustablewrenchora15mmboxwrench. 4. Pushtherearderailleurbackintoposition. 5. Closethebrake;thenspinthewheeltomakesurethatitiscenteredintheframeand clearsthebrakeshoes. SeatpostQuickRelease Manybikesareequippedwithquick-releaseseatpostbinders.Whileaquickreleaselooks likealongboltwithaleverononeendandanutontheother,infactthequickreleaseuses acamactiontofirmlyclamptheseatpost. AdjustingtheQuickReleaseMechanism: Theactionofthequickreleasecamsqueezestheseatcollararoundtheseatposttohold theseatpostsecurelyinplace.Theamountofclampingforceiscontrolledbythetension adjustingnut.Turningthetensionadjustingnutclockwisewhilekeepingthecamleverfrom rotatingincreasesclampingforce;turningitcounterclockwisewhilekeepingthecamlever fromrotatingreducesclampingforce.Lessthanhalfaturnofthetensionadjustingnutcan makethedifferencebetweensafeclampingforceandunsafeclampingforce. CAUTION:Thefullforceofthecamactionisneededtoclamptheseatpost securely.Holdingthenutwithonehandandturningtheleverlikeawingnutwith theotherhanduntileverythingisastightasyoucangetitwillnotclampthe seatpostsafely. CAUTION:Ifyoucanfullyclosethequickreleasewithoutwrappingyourfingers aroundtheseatpostforleverage,andtheleverdoesnotleaveaclearimprintinthe palmofyourhand,thetensionisinsufficient.Openthelever;turnthetension adjustingnutclockwiseaquarterturn;thentryagain. BrakesAdjustment Formosteffectivebraking,usebothbrakesandapplythemsimultaneously. Itisimportantforyoutoknowwhichbrakelevercontrolswhichbrakeonyourbike.Ensure thatyourhandscanreachandsqueezethebrakeleverscomfortably. ApplyingBrakes Whenyouapplyoneorbothbrakes,thebikebeginstoslow,butyourbodywantsto continueatthespeedatwhichitwasgoing.Thiscausesatransferofweighttothefront wheel,or,underheavybraking,aroundthefrontwheelhub,whichcouldharmyou. Awheelwithmoreweightonitwillacceptgreaterbrakepressurebeforelockup;awheel withlessweightwilllockupwithlessbrakepressure.
