Operation

Electric Hotplates

To switch on a hotplate, turn the relevant control knob anticlockwise to the required heat setting. The control knob is numbered 1-6 (0 - OFF, 1 - Minimum, 6 - Maximum).

Hotplate Types:

Note: The plate may smoke and produce a slightly unpleasant odour when used for the first time; this is normal and will disappear.

Electric Hotplates Control Light

The Hotplates Control Light illuminates each time a cooking zone is switched on.

Cooking Temperature Suggestions

SettingTemperatureUse

6FastLarger stews, meat roll, fish, omelettes, steaks, Steaks, escalopes and frying.

Hints and Tips

Saucepans for use on solid plates should have several characteristics:

As soon as liquid starts boiling, turn down the plate control knob to maintain a simmer. You can switch off the plate before finishing cooking, using the accumulated heat. Stored stews in well-covered saucepans cook at lower temperatures, which is more economical.

Ensure pans are large enough to avoid liquids being spilt onto the plates. Never leave the plates on without a pan or with an empty pan.

Safety Warning: Never lean or reach over a hot electric plate. Always point pan handles inward or over the work surface next to the hob to avoid accidentally knocking over a pan. Take care when frying food in hot oil or fat, as overheated splashes could ignite.

If control knobs become difficult to turn, contact your local Electrolux Service Centre.

Diagram illustrating correct saucepan usage: pans should be heavy-duty, fit the heat area exactly or be slightly larger, and have a flat base. Incorrect usage shown with crossed-out images of small pans and pans with uneven bases. A warning symbol indicates to avoid leaning over hot plates and to keep pan handles turned inwards.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Important: Before any maintenance or cleaning, DISCONNECT the hob from the electricity supply.

The hob is best cleaned whilst still warm, as spillage is easier to remove.

The Hob Top

Regularly wipe the hob top with a soft cloth wrung out in warm water with a little washing up liquid. Avoid:

For heavily soiled hob tops, use a cleaning product like Hob Brite or Bar Keepers Friend. Control knobs can be removed by pulling them upward for easier cleaning.

The Hotplates

Spills onto the plates should be removed using warm water and a soft brush, nylon or plastic scourer. For maintenance, hotplate conditioner can be purchased from hardware stores. Alternatively, wipe plates with olive oil on a kitchen towel to prevent rust (note: this may cause slight smoking and odour on next use).

Stainless steel parts (spill rings and areas around hotplates) may become straw-coloured. Use a proprietary stainless steel cleaner to remove this discolouration.

Note: Failure to clean and condition hotplates may lead to rust and corrosion.

Something Not Working?

If the hob is not working correctly, perform the following checks before contacting your local Electrolux Service Force Centre.

SymptomSolution
The plate does not heat up
  • Check unit is plugged in and electrical supply is switched on.
  • Check the RCCB has not tripped (if fitted).
  • Check the mains fuse has not blown.
  • Check the correct control knob has been turned.
The plate is not giving satisfactory results
  • Check the plate is clean and dry.
  • Check the cooking pan is the correct size for the plate.
  • Check the cooking pan has a flat bottom.
  • Check the setting is correct for the type of cooking.

If the hob still does not operate correctly after these checks, contact your local Electrolux Service Force Centre. Proof of purchase is required for in-guarantee service calls. Important Safety Requirements

This hob must be installed in accordance with the IEE Wiring Regulations (Current Edition). Detailed recommendations are in British Standards Codes Of Practice: B.S. 6172/B.S. 5440, Par. 2 and B.S. 6891 Current Editions.

Location

This hob is registered as a "Class X" appliance according to Fire Risk Regulations. Observe minimum distances. The hob may be located in a kitchen, kitchen/diner, or bed sitting room, but not in a bathroom or shower room.

Before making the cut-out, ensure a minimum distance of 55 mm. between the rear edge of the hob and the wall. A minimum distance of 100 mm. must be left between the side edges of the hob and any adjacent cabinets or walls.

The minimum distance for combustible material fitted above the hob, in line with the edges, is 400 mm. If fitted below 400 mm, a 50 mm. space must be allowed from the edges.

The minimum distance for combustible material fitted directly above the hob is 700 mm.

Diagrams illustrating required clearances for hob installation. Diagram 1 (without cooker hood) shows minimum distances: 700mm above hob, 400mm for combustible material in line with edges, 50mm clearance for combustible material below 400mm, 100mm from side edges, 55mm from rear edge. Diagram 2 (with cooker hood) shows minimum distances: 600mm above hob, 650mm if using a cooker hood, with other clearances similar to Diagram 1.

Installation

The hob must be installed according to the supplied instructions by qualified personnel to relevant British Standards. The manufacturer is not liable for issues arising from ignored instructions.

Ensure the hob is easily accessible for engineers in case of breakdown.

When the Hob is First Installed

Once installed, remove any protective materials from the factory.

Supply Connections

This hob is designed for a 230-240 V (50Hz) electricity supply.

The hob has a terminal block marked as follows:

The supply cable must be 6mm, PVC twin and earth, fused to 30amp. Install a double pole switch with a minimum 3mm gap between contacts, suitable for the load and current regulations. The switch must not break the earth cable. Ensure the supply cord does not contact surfaces above 50 deg. C.

Cut Out Size

Diagram showing the rectangular cut-out dimensions for the hob: 560mm width, 480mm depth, with a minimum 55mm clearance from the rear edge.

Building In

Building over a cupboard or drawer

If installing above a cupboard or drawer, fit a heat-resistant board below the hob base. Electrical connection should be made as shown in diagrams 1 and 2, which illustrate an ON/OFF switch and FLEX OUTLET.

Building over a kitchen unit with door

Proper arrangements are needed when designing furniture units to avoid contact with the hob's hot bottom. Diagram 3 shows a recommended solution: Panel 'a' under the hob should be removable for technical access, and space 'b' behind the unit can be used for connections. Diagram 3 indicates a 60mm depth for the unit and a 20mm minimum clearance. A close-up diagram 'a' shows the sealing gasket applied to the edges of the cut-out, forming a double seal to prevent liquid ingress.

Fitting the Hob into the Worktop

Apply the supplied seals to the edges of the cut-out, precisely on the front and rear edges, and 50 mm from the side edges, ensuring seals meet without overlapping.

Place the hob into the cut-out, ensuring it is centred.

Fix the hob using the relevant clamps and screws as shown in the diagram. Trim any excess seal after tightening screws.

The hob edge forms a double seal to prevent liquid ingress.

Electrical Connections

Any electrical work must be carried out by a qualified electrician or competent person, adhering to current regulations. This hob must be earthed. The manufacturer is not liable for failure to observe these safety measures.

The hob connects to a 230-240V 50Hz AC electrical supply. Ensure the voltage matches the rating plate. The hob is supplied without a cord; a 3-core flexible supply cord must be fitted.

Connection Steps:

  1. Remove the mains terminal cover plate to expose the terminal block.
  2. Loosen cable clamp screws and lift the clamp to allow cable passage.
  3. Connect the red (live) wire to terminal 1.
  4. Connect the black (neutral) wire to terminal 4.
  5. Connect the green/yellow (earth) wire to terminal 5 (marked with earth symbol). The earth wire should be approx. 2 cm longer than live and neutral wires.
  6. Secure the cable by means of the clamp screws and refit the terminal block cover.

Connect the hob to a double pole switch with a minimum 3mm gap between contacts, suitable for the load and current regulations. The switch should be sited within 2m of the hob and be easily accessible. The switch must not break the earth cable.

Ensure the hob supply cord does not contact surfaces with temperatures higher than 50 deg. C.
