DigiTech Bass Squeeze Dual Band Bass Compressor
Owner's Manual and Product Information
Product Overview
The DigiTech Bass Squeeze Compressor is a studio-quality, dual-band compressor designed for bass guitar. It features dbx® dynamics processing powered by DigiTech's AudioDNA™ DSP engine, offering versatility for various applications. Whether used for subtle compression of low and high frequencies or for radical tone shaping, the Bass Squeeze is presented as an essential tool for a bassist's rig.
Controls and Features
The front panel of the Bass Squeeze features several controls and input/output jacks:
Pedal Front Panel Layout: The front panel features four main rotary knobs labeled LEVEL, X-OVER, LO BAND, and HI BAND. Below these are the product name "BASS SQUEEZE DUAL BAND BASS COMPRESSOR". To the left are two output jacks labeled OUT 2 (MIXER) and OUT 1 (AMP). To the right is the input jack labeled IN. A footswitch (PEDAL) is located at the bottom, which turns the effect on and off. An Indicator LED is positioned above the footswitch.
Rotary Knobs:
- LEVEL Knob: Controls the effect's output level. Turning clockwise increases the output level, and counter-clockwise decreases it. At the minimum positions for LO BAND and HI BAND, turning the LEVEL knob to its maximum position provides unity gain.
- X-OVER Knob: Sets the crossover frequency that separates the LO BAND and HI BAND compressors. The minimum position is 100Hz, and the maximum is 3kHz. Frequencies below the crossover setting are managed by the LO BAND compression knob, while frequencies above are managed by the HI BAND compression knob.
- LO BAND Knob: Controls the compression amount for frequencies below the X-OVER setting. Turning clockwise increases compression and level for these frequencies. Lower settings help control peaks, while higher settings emphasize these frequencies.
- HI BAND Knob: Controls the compression amount for frequencies above the X-OVER setting. Turning clockwise increases compression and level for these frequencies. Lower settings help control peaks, while higher settings emphasize these frequencies.
Jacks:
- Input Jack (IN): Connect your bass guitar to this jack. Connecting a cable here engages battery power, even if the Indicator LED is off. Disconnect cables when not in use to prolong battery life.
- Out 1 (AMP) Jack: Connect this output to your bass amplifier.
- Out 2 (MIXER) Jack: This output features DigiTech's CIT™ cabinet modeling technology, allowing direct connection to a mixer or recorder input without an amplifier. The CIT model is based on a 4x10 cabinet for an authentic bass amplifier sound.
- AC Adapter Jack: Connect a DigiTech PS200R power supply to this jack. Ensure the supply matches your area's mains line voltage.
Other Features:
- Pedal (Footswitch): Turns the effect on and off.
- Indicator LED: Shows when the effect is active. If the LED dims or doesn't light with cables connected, the battery may need replacement.
- Pedal Release Pins: Spring-loaded pins that secure the pedal. Pushing either pin releases the pedal from the chassis to access the battery compartment.
Connections and Setup
The Bass Squeeze offers a single input and two outputs (AMP and MIXER), providing flexibility for connecting to a bass amplifier, a mixing console, a recording device, or both.
Setup Diagram Description: The diagram illustrates a typical setup. A bass guitar connects to the "IN" jack of the Bass Squeeze pedal. The "OUT 1 (AMP)" jack connects to an amplifier. The "OUT 2 (MIXER)" jack can connect to a mixer. An optional DigiTech PS200R power supply connects to the AC adapter jack on the pedal. The mixer is shown with multiple input channels.
Setup Directions:
- Turn the volume down on the amplifier/mixer you are connecting to.
- Connect the pedal's output (OUT 1 or OUT 2) to the amplifier/mixer input.
- Connect your bass guitar to the pedal's input (IN).
- Connect the power supply to the pedal (optional).
- Set the LEVEL knob to its maximum position and the LO BAND and HI BAND knobs to their minimum positions.
- Turn up your amplifier/mixer level to the desired listening level.
- Turn on the pedal by pressing the footswitch. Gradually adjust the LO BAND and HI BAND knobs, and then adjust the LEVEL knob to achieve the desired sound.
Sample Settings
The following are suggested starting points for different tonal characteristics:
- Thick Bottom: Settings designed to emphasize low-end frequencies.
- Glass Top: Settings aimed at enhancing high-frequency clarity.
- Mild Compression: Settings for subtle, natural-sounding compression.
Battery Replacement
The pedal can be powered by a 9V alkaline dry battery or an optional AC adapter.
Battery Replacement Diagram Description: The diagram shows the pedal chassis with the top cover removed. It highlights the battery compartment, the 9V DC battery, the battery cable, the spring mechanism, the pedal switch arm, and the pedal release pins. It illustrates how to access the battery by pushing the release pins.
Steps for Battery Replacement:
- Using the tip of a 1/4" cable, push one of the release pins on either side of the pedal to detach the pedal from the chassis.
- Remove the battery from the battery compartment and disconnect its cable.
- Connect a new battery to the cable and place it in the battery compartment, ensuring the battery cable does not obstruct the spring or pedal switch arm.
- Align one hole of the pedal with its corresponding pin on the chassis.
- Push the opposite pin inward and lower the other side of the pedal onto the depressed pin. Release the pin. The pedal is properly fastened when both release pins are flush with the outer side of the pedal.
