Note: If the sound is distorted when emphasizing bass, turn down the volume.
To Prevent Sound from Skipping (ESP)
The ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) function uses a buffer memory to store music data for about 10 seconds, preventing skips during movement. Use this function when listening in a car or while walking.
Press the "ESP" button. The "ESP" indication appears.
Notes:
- Playing may still stop with strong shocks.
- Noise or skips may occur with dirty/scratched CDs, test CDs, or continuous shocks.

To Protect Your Hearing (AVLS)
The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function limits the maximum volume to protect your ears. Set AVLS to "LIMIT". The "AVLS" indication appears.
Note: If sound distorts with bass boost and AVLS, turn down the volume.
Advanced Features and Usage
To Resume Playing from the Point You Stopped the CD (Resume Play)
Normally, playback starts from the beginning of the CD after stopping. Resume Play lets you listen from where you last stopped.
Set the "RESUME" switch to "ON". Set to "OFF" to cancel.
Notes:
- Playback starts from the beginning if the lid is opened, even with RESUME ON.
- The resume point may be inaccurate by about 30 seconds.
To Turn Off the Beep
Disconnect the power source. While pressing and holding the stop button (■), reconnect the power source. To re-enable the beep, disconnect power and reconnect without holding the stop button.
Connecting to Other Stereo Equipment
Listen to CDs through other stereo equipment or record CDs onto cassette tapes or MiniDiscs. Refer to the equipment's manual for details. Turn off all equipment before connecting.
- Using the Connecting Cord: Connect the Discman's OPTICAL (DIGITAL)/LINE OUT or LINE OUT jack to the stereo equipment's LINE IN or REC IN jack using the supplied connecting cord (RK-G129HG).
- Using the Optical Digital Connecting Cord: Connect the Discman's OPTICAL (DIGITAL)/LINE OUT jack to the equipment's OPTICAL (DIGITAL) IN jack using an optical digital cord (e.g., POC-5B).
Notes:
- Digital MEGA BASS is disabled when using a connecting cord or optical digital connecting cord.
- When using digital equipment, use the AC power adaptor. Battery power may cause unexpected issues with optical digital output.
- The beep sound is not output from the OPTICAL (DIGITAL)/LINE OUT or LINE OUT jacks.
- Volume cannot be adjusted by the Discman when connected via OPTICAL (DIGITAL)/LINE OUT or LINE OUT.
- If using a tape recorder with a blank search function, disable ESP when recording to ensure the function works correctly.
Playing a CD in a Car
Your Discman can be used in a car. You may need accessories like the Car Connecting Pack CPA-9, Car Battery Cord DCC-E245, or Mount Kit CPM-300PC.
Notes:
- Do not place the Discman on the dashboard.
- Do not leave the Discman in a car parked under sunlight.
- Use a Sony car connecting pack for noise reduction.
Switched Ignition Function: The Discman stops automatically when the car engine is turned off (may vary by car model).
Using the Supplied Remote Control
The remote control functions as a wired remote. It includes buttons for play/pause (▶||), stop (■), search/AMS (◄◄/►►), volume (VOL), HOLD, and ESP.
Note: Use only the supplied remote control; others may not be compatible.
Display Window Information
The display shows battery status, track information, and operation indicators. The "Discman" characters light up sequentially during operation.
Display Illumination: The display is always illuminated when using AC power or car battery. When using batteries, it illuminates for approximately 5 seconds after a button press. Illumination can be turned off by holding PLAY MODE while connecting power.
Power Sources
Using Rechargeable Battery
Charge the rechargeable battery (BP-DM10 or BP-DM20) before first use.
- Open the battery compartment lid.
- Insert the rechargeable battery, ensuring "SONY" faces the correct direction. Close the lid.
- Connect the AC power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5V jack and a wall outlet. The "CHG" indicator lights up. Charge for about 2 hours (BP-DM10) or 3 hours (BP-DM20).
- When fully charged, "CHG" disappears. Disconnect the AC power adaptor.
When to Charge: The battery indicator (?) appears when weak, and "Lo batt" when depleted. Recharge the battery when it's used up to maintain capacity.
Notes:
- Charging time varies.
- New or long-unused batteries may require several charge/discharge cycles for full capacity.
- Replace batteries with Sony BP-DM10 or BP-DM20; do not use other types.
Using Dry Batteries
Open the battery compartment lid. Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries, matching the polarity (+/-) to the diagram. Close the lid.
When to Replace: The battery indicator (?) appears when weak, and "Lo batt" when depleted. Replace all batteries with new ones.
Notes:
- Do not charge dry batteries.
- Do not mix new and old batteries.
- Do not mix different battery types.
- Do not use manganese batteries.
Using the Battery Case
The battery case extends playback time. Batteries in the case and the unit are consumed together.
- Hook the battery case onto the Discman and fasten the screw.
- Open the lid of the battery case.
- Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries, matching polarity. Close the lid.

- If the unit causes radio/TV interference, turn it off or move it away.
- Do not wrap the unit in cloth during use to prevent malfunction or accidents.
On Headphones (Road Safety & Hearing Protection)
- Do not use headphones while driving, cycling, or operating vehicles, as it is a traffic hazard and illegal in some areas.
- Exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations (e.g., walking near traffic).
- Avoid continuous, loud, and extended play to prevent hearing damage. Reduce volume or stop use if you experience ringing in your ears.
- Keep volume moderate to hear outside sounds and be considerate of others.
Maintenance
- To clean the lens: Use a lens cleaning kit (KK-DM1).
- To clean the casing: Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with water or mild detergent. Do not use alcohol, benzine, or thinner.
