Playing a CD Right Away!

You can play a CD using house current, a rechargeable battery, dry batteries, or a car battery.

1. Connect

Connect headphones to the remote control. Connect the AC power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5V jack and to a wall outlet.

For models supplied with the AC plug adaptor: If the AC power adaptor does not fit the wall outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.

For models supplied with the remote control: Connect the microplug of the headphones to the remote control, not directly to the PHONES/REMOTE jack of the Discman. Ensure a firm connection to avoid noise during playback.

2. Place a CD

Slide the "OPEN" switch to open the lid. Place the CD with the label side up, fitting it onto the pivot.

3. Play

Using the remote control, press the play button (▶). Adjust the volume using the VOL control. To stop playback, press the stop button (■).

Other Operations

Basic Operations

*AMS = Automatic Music Sensor

**These operations are possible during both play and pause.

To Remove the CD

Remove the CD while pressing the pivot.

Notes on Controlling Volume with Remote

Using Other Functions

To Enjoy More Powerful Bass Sound

Press the "Digital MEGA BASS" button to select "BASS" or "BASS". "BASS" is more effective.

Note: If the sound is distorted when emphasizing bass, turn down the volume.

To Prevent Sound from Skipping (ESP)

The ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) function uses a buffer memory to store music data for about 10 seconds, preventing skips during movement. Use this function when listening in a car or while walking.

Press the "ESP" button. The "ESP" indication appears.

Notes:

To Lock the Buttons

Slide the "HOLD" switch in the direction of the arrow. When pressed, "Hold" appears in the display, and unit operations are locked (remote control still works). Slide HOLD back to unlock.

To Protect Your Hearing (AVLS)

The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function limits the maximum volume to protect your ears. Set AVLS to "LIMIT". The "AVLS" indication appears.

Note: If sound distorts with bass boost and AVLS, turn down the volume.

Advanced Features and Usage

To Resume Playing from the Point You Stopped the CD (Resume Play)

Normally, playback starts from the beginning of the CD after stopping. Resume Play lets you listen from where you last stopped.

Set the "RESUME" switch to "ON". Set to "OFF" to cancel.

Notes:

To Turn Off the Beep

Disconnect the power source. While pressing and holding the stop button (■), reconnect the power source. To re-enable the beep, disconnect power and reconnect without holding the stop button.

Connecting to Other Stereo Equipment

Listen to CDs through other stereo equipment or record CDs onto cassette tapes or MiniDiscs. Refer to the equipment's manual for details. Turn off all equipment before connecting.

Notes:

Playing a CD in a Car

Your Discman can be used in a car. You may need accessories like the Car Connecting Pack CPA-9, Car Battery Cord DCC-E245, or Mount Kit CPM-300PC.

Notes:

Switched Ignition Function: The Discman stops automatically when the car engine is turned off (may vary by car model).

Using the Supplied Remote Control

The remote control functions as a wired remote. It includes buttons for play/pause (▶||), stop (■), search/AMS (◄◄/►►), volume (VOL), HOLD, and ESP.

Note: Use only the supplied remote control; others may not be compatible.

Display Window Information

The display shows battery status, track information, and operation indicators. The "Discman" characters light up sequentially during operation.

Display Illumination: The display is always illuminated when using AC power or car battery. When using batteries, it illuminates for approximately 5 seconds after a button press. Illumination can be turned off by holding PLAY MODE while connecting power.

  1. Open the battery compartment lid.
  2. Insert the rechargeable battery, ensuring "SONY" faces the correct direction. Close the lid.
