Getting Started
Basic Operations
The Pioneer MVH-S120 Series Digital Media Receiver models include MVH-S120UI, MVH-S120UIG, MVH-S12UI, MVH-S120UB, MVH-S120UBG, MVH-S120UBA, and MVH-S120UBW.

Removing the Front Panel
To prevent theft, remove the front panel. Disconnect any wires connected to the front panel and the device, and turn off the power before removing the front panel.
- Remove: Follow the numbered steps (1, 2) in the diagram.
- Attach: Align the panel and push it into place.
Important:
- Protect the front panel from strong impacts.
- Store the front panel away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.
- Always store the removed front panel in its protective case or pouch.
Setting Menu
When the ignition key is turned to the ON position after installing the unit, [SET UP :YES] will appear.
- Press the M.C. selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector to choose an option and press the selector to confirm. To move to the next menu item, you must confirm your selection.
The setting menu disappears if the unit is not operated for 30 seconds. If you do not wish to make settings at this time, turn the M.C. selector and select [NO]. Then confirm your selection by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector to choose an option and press the selector to confirm.

- [QUIT:YES] appears when all settings are complete. To return to the first setting item, turn the M.C. selector and select [QUIT :NO]. Then confirm your selection by pressing the selector.
- Press the M.C. selector and confirm.
Notes:
- The setting menu can be cancelled by pressing SRC/OFF.
- These settings can be made anytime from SYSTEM settings (page 18) and INITIAL settings.
Cancelling the Demo Display (DEMO OFF)
- Press the M.C. selector to display the main menu.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [SYSTEM], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [DEMO OFF], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [YES], and confirm by pressing the selector.
INITIAL Settings
- Press SRC/OFF until the unit powers off.
- Press and hold SRC/OFF to display the main menu.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [INITIAL], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector to choose an option and confirm by pressing the selector.
Radio
The tuner frequencies of this unit are allocated for use in Western Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania. Reception may be poor in other regions. The RDS (Radio Data System) function only works in areas where RDS signals are broadcast for FM stations.
Receiving Preset Stations
- Press SRC/OFF and select [RADIO].
- Press BAND/ and select the band [FM1], [FM2], [FM3], [MW], or [LW].
- Press any number button (1-6).
Tip: Preset stations can also be selected using the buttons when [SEEK] is set to [PCH] in the FUNCTION settings (page 16).
Best Station Memory (BSM)
The six strongest stations are stored in the number buttons (1-6).
- When the frequency band is selected, press the M.C. selector to display the main menu.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [FUNCTION], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [BSM], and confirm by pressing the selector.
Manual Station Search
- After selecting the frequency band, press and release the seek buttons ( / ) to select a station. The search stops when the unit receives a station. You can cancel the station search by pressing the seek buttons again.
Note: [SEEK] must be set to [MAN] in the FUNCTION settings (page 16).
Manual Station Storage
- When receiving a station you want to store, press and hold one of the number buttons (1-6) until the number stops flashing.
Using PTY Functions
The unit searches for stations based on PTY (Program Type) information.
- Press and hold BASS while receiving FM radio.
- Turn the M.C. selector and select the program type: [NEWS/INFO], [POPULAR], [CLASSICS], or [OTHERS].
- Press the M.C. selector. The unit will start searching for a station. When a station is found, its program service name will appear on the display.
Notes:
- Cancel the search by pressing the M.C. selector.
- The program may differ from the program type indicated by PTY for some stations.
- If a station broadcasting the searched program type is not found, [NOT FOUND] will appear, and the tuner will return to the previously listened station.
USB/iPod®/AUX
Note: iPod function is not available on models MVH-S120UB/S120UBG/S120UBA/S120UBW.
Playback
Remove headphones from the unit before connecting it to this unit.
USB Devices (including Android™)/iPod
- Open the USB port cover.
- Connect the USB device/iPod with a suitable cable.
Note: If you want the unit to automatically switch to the [USB] source when a USB device/iPod is connected, set [USB AUTO] to [ON] in the SYSTEM settings (page 19).
Warning: Use an optional USB cable for connecting the USB device, as a directly connected USB device may protrude and be dangerous.
Stop playback before disconnecting the device.
AOA Connections
For more information on AOA connections, see page 14.
MTP Connection
Devices with Android OS 4.0 or later can be connected to this unit using the MTP connection via the supplied cable. Depending on the connected device and the number of files it contains, audio files/songs may not be playable via MTP connection. Note that MTP connection is not compatible with WAV or FLAC file formats.
Note: If using MTP connection, set [ANDROID WIRED] to [MEMORY] in the SYSTEM settings (page 19).
AUX
- Insert the stereo mini-plug into the AUX input jack.
- Press SRC/OFF and select [AUX] as the source.
Note: If [AUX] is set to [OFF] in the SYSTEM settings, [AUX] cannot be selected as a source (page 19).
Operations
Various adjustments can be made in the FUNCTION settings (page 15).
Note that the following functions are not available for AUX devices. Use the AUX device to operate it.

Useful iPod Functions
Link Playback Mode
You can jump to songs by the artist, album, or genre currently playing.
- When listening to a song, press and hold 4/PAUSE to enter Link Playback mode.
- Turn the M.C. selector and select [ARTIST], [ALBUM], or [GENRE], then confirm your selection by pressing the selector. The selected song/album will play after the currently playing song.
Note: Selected songs/albums can be cancelled using functions other than Link Playback mode (e.g., fast forward and rewind).
iPod Control
This unit can be controlled via a connected iPod.
- The following iPod models are not compatible with this function:
iPod nano 1st generation, iPod with video playback - Press BAND/ during playback and select the control mode.
[CONTROL iPod]: The iPod function of the unit can be used from the connected iPod.
[CONTROL AUDIO]: The iPod function of the unit can be used only with the buttons on this unit or the supplied remote control. In this mode, the power of the connected iPod cannot be turned on or off.
Notes:
- Pressing iPod also changes the control method (MVH-S120UI/S120UIG/S12UI only).
- When changing the control mode to [CONTROL iPod], song playback will pause. Resume playback using the connected iPod.
- The following functions are available from the unit even when the control mode is set to [CONTROL iPod].
App Mode
(APP function is not available on models MVH-S120UB/S120UBG/S120UBA/S120UBW).
You can use the unit with the APP application installed on your iPhone. In some cases, you can control the application's functions by using the unit. For more information, refer to our website.

For iPhone Users
This function is compatible with iPhones and iPod touch devices with iOS 5.0 or later installed.

Playing the App Through the Unit
- Connect this unit to your mobile device.
• iPhone via USB (page 8) - Press SRC/OFF and select [APP].
- Start the application using your mobile device.

Spotify®
(MVH-S120UI/S120UIG/S12UI are compatible only when Spotify is installed on an iPhone).
Spotify is a music streaming service not affiliated with Pioneer. For more information, visit http://www.spotify.com.
The Spotify application is available for compatible smartphones. Find the latest compatibility information at https://support.spotify.com/. To listen to Spotify while driving, first download the Spotify application to your iPhone. You can download it via the iTunes App Store. Choose between a free account or a paid Premium account either through the app or at spotify.com. A Premium account offers more features, including listening offline.

Listening to Spotify
Update the Spotify application firmware to the latest version before use.
- Connect this unit to your mobile device.
• iPhone via USB (page 8) - Press SRC/OFF and select [SPOTIFY].
- Start the Spotify application from your mobile device and begin playback.

Pioneer ARC APP Usage
(Pioneer ARC APP for iPhone function is not available on models MVH-S120UB/S120UBG/S120UBA/S120UBW).
You can use the unit with the Pioneer ARC APP application installed on your iPhone/Android device. In some cases, you can control the application's functions, such as source selection and pause, using the unit. For information on the functions available in the application, refer to the application's help section.
Warning: Do not attempt to use the application while driving. Pull over to a safe location and park your vehicle before attempting to use the application controls.
For iPhone Users
This function is compatible with iPhones (iPhone 5 or later) and iPod touch devices (5th and 6th generation) with iOS 8.0 or later installed. You can download the Pioneer ARC APP from the iTunes App Store.
For Android Device Users
This function is compatible with devices with Android OS 4.1 or later and supporting AOA (Android Open Accessory) 2.0. You can download the Pioneer ARC APP from Google Play.
Note: Some Android devices connected via AOA 2.0 may not function correctly or produce sound due to their software structure, regardless of the OS version.
Connecting with the Pioneer ARC APP
When Connected with an Android Device
- Press the M.C. selector to display the main menu.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [SYSTEM], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [ANDROID WIRED], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [APP CONTROL], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [P.APP AUTO ON], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select [ON], and confirm by pressing the selector.
- Connect this unit to your mobile device via USB. The Pioneer ARC APP for Android devices will start automatically.
Note: If the Pioneer ARC APP is not installed on your Android device, a notification will appear prompting you to install the app on your Android device. Cancel the notification by selecting [OFF] for [P.APP AUTO ON] (page 19).
When Connected with an iPhone Device
- Connect this unit to your mobile device via USB.
- Press SRC/OFF to select the source.
- Press and hold the M.C. selector. The Pioneer ARC APP for iPhone will start automatically.
Note: If the connection fails, start the Pioneer ARC APP on your iPhone.
Settings
Various settings can be adjusted in the main menu.
- Press the M.C. selector to display the main menu.
- Turn the M.C. selector, select a category, and confirm your selection by pressing the selector.

You can customize the equalizer curve or create your own. [CUSTOM1] can be set separately for each source. The combinations below are automatically set to the same setting. • USB, iPod, ANDROID, SPOTIFY and APP (iPhone) [CUSTOM2] is a shared setting that is common to all sources. You can also switch the equalizer by repeatedly pressing EQ (MVH-S120UB/S120UIG/S120UBA/S120UBW only). |

* [PW SAVE] is cancelled if the vehicle battery is disconnected. Power saving mode must be reactivated when the battery is reconnected. If the vehicle ignition switch does not have an ACC (accessory) position, the unit may draw power from the battery depending on the connection method, even when [PW SAVE] is not in use.

Troubleshooting
Display Returns to Normal Display Automatically
- No operation has been performed for approximately 30 seconds. Perform an operation.
Repeat Playback Range Changes Unexpectedly
- Depending on the repeat playback range, the selected range may change when selecting another folder or song, or when fast forwarding/rewinding. Select the repeat playback range again.
Subfolders Are Not Played
- Subfolders cannot be played when [FLD] (folder repeat) is selected. Select another repeat playback range.
Audio is Intermittent
- You are using a mobile phone or other device that causes interference. Move any electrical devices that may cause interference away from this unit.
Error Messages
General
- AMP ERROR
This unit is not functioning, or the speaker connection is incorrect.
→ The protection circuit is activated.
- Check the speaker connection.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If the message does not disappear, contact your dealer or an authorized Pioneer service center.
USB Device/iPod
- CHECK USB
Short circuit in the USB connector or USB cable.
– Check that the USB connector or USB cable is not touching anything and is not damaged.
→ The connected USB storage device consumes more current than the maximum allowed, sometimes with a delay.
– Disconnect the USB device and do not use it. Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON, then to OFF. Connect only compliant USB devices. - ERROR-19
→ Data transfer failed.
- Perform one of the following operations and then return to the USB source.
• Disconnect the USB device.
• Switch to another source. - iPod Error
- Disconnect the cable from the iPod. When the iPod's main menu is displayed, reconnect the iPod and reset it. - ERROR-23
USB device was not formatted correctly.
– Format the USB device to FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32 file system. - ERROR-16
iPod firmware version is old.
Update the iPod version. - iPod Error
- Disconnect the cable from the iPod. When the iPod's main menu is displayed, reconnect the iPod and reset it. - STOP
→ There are no songs in the current list.
Select a list that contains songs. - NOT FOUND
→ No matching songs found.
Transfer songs to your iPod.
APP
- START UP APP
→ The application has not started yet.
– Start the application using your mobile device.
Spotify
- CHECK APP
Connection to the Spotify application failed.
– Follow the on-screen instructions.
Handling Instructions
USB Device
- USB storage devices connected via USB hubs are not supported.
- Securely connect the USB storage device before operation. Do not drop the USB storage device on the floor where it could get caught under the brake or accelerator pedal.
- Depending on the USB storage device, the following problems may occur.
- Functions may vary.
- The storage device may not be recognized.
- Files may not play correctly.
- The device may cause audible interference when listening to the radio.
iPod
- Do not leave the iPod in a place with high temperatures.
- Securely attach the iPod during driving. Do not drop the iPod on the floor where it could get caught under the brake or accelerator pedal.
- iPod settings, such as equalizer and repeat playback, will be automatically changed when the iPod is connected to the unit. When the iPod is disconnected, these settings will revert to their original settings.
- This unit does not display incompatible text stored on the iPod.
