ART M-Five Ribbon Microphone

APPLIED RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY

Description

The ART M-Five has been engineered to deliver incredibly open and natural sounding recordings, a characteristic often associated with classic ribbon microphone designs. The active element of the M-Five is a very thin corrugated aluminum ribbon mounted under low tension between the poles of a strong magnet. This classic design provides warm and natural sound reproduction suitable for virtually any studio microphone application. With incredibly fast and accurate transient response and stunning realism, the M-Five classic ribbon microphone is ideal for contemporary direct-to-digital recordings.

Although ribbon microphones are inherently fragile, the M-Five can handle high sound pressure levels approaching the 148dB range. The low-tension, 2-inch long, 2-micron thick aluminum ribbon design offers audio reproduction with smooth, natural, and extended low and high-frequency response.

The asymmetrical figure-8 pickup pattern features an extended sweet spot on the rear face of the microphone, allowing for accurate reproduction of the natural space and ambient reverberation of a recording environment. The microphone's chassis is constructed from precision-tooled aluminum alloy and features a dent-resistant stainless-steel wire-mesh windscreen. The included shock-mount significantly reduces vibration and handling noise, while securely holding the microphone in any required position during the recording process.

Please Note: The M-Five should always be stored upright in its carrying case when not in use.

Care of a Ribbon Microphone

All ribbon microphones require special care and careful handling to prevent serious damage. To ensure a long lifespan for your M-Five, please follow these instructions:

  1. Always protect your M-Five from any impact, including dropping or shaking the microphone during transit. Handle the M-Five with extreme care and store it in its carrying case in a vertical (upright) position when not in use.
  2. Never blow into your M-Five or tap on the microphone body. Protect the microphone from any sudden or strong blasts of air movement, as this can tear or irreparably damage the fragile ribbon element. When using an M-Five, it is advisable to use a pop filter to protect the ribbon from percussive events and excessive moisture.
  3. When not in use, always keep the M-Five in the provided carrying case and store the microphone vertically. The ribbon element can sag if the microphone is stored horizontally for extended periods, which will degrade its overall performance.
  4. It is never recommended to apply phantom power to your M-Five. Although there is a protection circuit in series with the microphone's XLR input, accidents can occur. If voltage reaches the microphone element, it could cause irreparable damage to the ribbon.
