- 3-Axis compass heading
- Suitable for marine environments
Physical Description:
The sensor unit has a cylindrical form factor with a diameter of approximately 95.5mm and a height of 127mm. It features a standard G3/4 thread for mounting and includes a 10-meter cable. The unit is CE and RoHS certified.
Disclaimer: This product is intended to aid navigation and should supplement standard navigational practices. Users are responsible for prudent use. Quark-elec and its distributors are not liable for any accident, loss, injury, or damage arising from the use or misuse of this product.
Note: Units supplied from May 15, 2021, onwards include the Heading function.
AS07-N2K Installation
The AS07-N2K connects directly to your NMEA 2000 backbone for power and data transfer. No other connections or configuration are required for basic operation.
1. Mounting Considerations
- Mount in a sturdy outdoor location with a clear 'line of sight' to the sky.
- Position as close to the vehicle/boat's center of gravity as possible. Avoid mounting too high to ensure a more accurate compass reading.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 0.3 meters from other compasses (standard and steering).
- Maintain a minimum distance of 2 meters from a VHF antenna.
- Ensure the mounting location does not interfere with moving equipment, such as radar.
- Avoid installation near: ferrous metals or anything that can create a magnetic field, including magnetized materials, electric motors, electronic equipment, engines, generators, power/ignition cables, and batteries.
- Do not install within a steel or magnetic container, or within the hull of a steel boat/vehicle.
- Orientation: The AS07-N2K has two raised lines on the tube. The center point of these should be pointed straight forward, towards the front of the boat. If precise forward alignment is not possible, the orientation can be adjusted by +90 to -90 degrees using the Windows configuration tool (refer to the full manual for details).
- The sensor has a standard G3/4 thread and is supplied with a base.
- If drilling holes for screws and cabling, seal all holes to prevent damage to the vessel or equipment.
2. Disconnect Power
Disconnect all power sources before connecting your equipment.
3. Connect to NMEA 2000 Backbone
The AS07-N2K draws 12.0V power from your NMEA 2000 backbone. A NMEA 2000 backbone with two termination resistors (one at each end) is required. A NMEA 2000 Starter Kit is recommended (available at www.quark-elec.com/product/nmea-2000-n2k-starter-kit/).
4. Re-power Backbone
Re-power your NMEA 2000 backbone. Positional data will now be available to all devices on the NMEA 2000 bus.
Using the Optional Output Switch (AS07-C)
The AS07-N2K can be used directly for instant positional data on your NMEA 2000 bus. Alternatively, it can be used with the AS07-C Optional Output Switch for additional functionality.
The AS07-C can be used for:
A. Additional Configuration (Windows PC Software)
- Filtering of NMEA 2000 PGN messages to eliminate unwanted data.
- Adjusting the frequency of NMEA 2000 data. The default is 1 Hz (once per second), but can be set to 1/2/5/10 Hz. Note: 10 Hz may cause data overflow on the NMEA 2000 system.
- Compensating for installations where the sensor heading marker is not aligned with the direct course heading.
B. Backward Compatibility with NMEA 0183 Devices
The AS07-C allows connection to devices using the NMEA 0183 protocol.
Before Leaving Home:
It is recommended to pre-install any necessary configuration software or drivers, as CD readers or internet access may be unavailable on site.
- Note: Software and drivers are optional and only needed for AS07-C configuration or NMEA 0183 use. Standard NMEA 2000 operation with default settings does not require them.
- Windows Users: Configuration software (Windows) is required. A hardware driver may also be needed. For Windows 10, the driver usually installs automatically. If not, it is included on the free CD or available at www.quark-elec.com.
- Mac Users: Drivers are not required for Mac.
Configuration software and specific instructions are provided on the FREE CD and at www.quark-elec.com.
Diagram Descriptions
Page 1 Diagram: Sensor Dimensions and Connections
This diagram illustrates the physical dimensions of the QK-AS07-N2K sensor. It shows a circular top view with a diameter of 95.5mm and a side view indicating a height of 127mm. A G3/4 thread fitting is indicated for mounting. A 10-meter cable is shown extending from the unit. The diagram also implies connection to a NMEA 2000 network.
Page 2 Diagram: NMEA 2000 Network Example
This diagram depicts a typical NMEA 2000 marine network setup. It shows the AS07-N2K GPS & Heading Sensor connected to a NMEA 2000 backbone. Other common NMEA 2000 devices like an AIS Receiver (A028), a Chartplotter, and an Autopilot are also shown connected to the backbone. The diagram indicates the need for power (12V) and termination resistors for the backbone.
Page 2 Diagram: AS07-C Optional Output Switch
This diagram illustrates the Quark-elec AS07-C Optional Output Switch. It shows connections for USB (for configuration only), NMEA 2000 input, NMEA 0183 output, and 12V/GND power. It is designed for NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183 conversion and configuration of the AS07-N2K.
