Allen & Heath AR2412 Remote Audio Unit
Getting Started Guide
Introduction
The AR2412 is a 19-inch rack mountable remote audio unit designed for Allen & Heath digital mixing systems that support the dSnake protocol. It features 24 remote-controlled mic/line preamps and 12 XLR line outputs.
Using a single network cable, the AR2412 can connect directly to a compatible mixer. The expansion port allows for cascaded (daisy-chain) connections to other units like the AB168 or AR84. Additionally, a ME personal monitoring system can be connected via the dedicated Monitor port or a cascaded AB168.
Diagram Description: The document illustrates connection scenarios:
- A mixer connected directly to the AR2412, with a ME Personal Mixing System connected to the AR2412's Monitor port.
- A mixer connected to the AR2412, which is then daisy-chained to an AB168, and a ME Personal Mixing System connected to the AB168.
- A mixer connected to the AR2412, which is then daisy-chained to an AR84, and a ME Personal Mixing System connected to the AR84.
A maximum of two dSnake remote units can be connected to each mixer's dSnake port.
The AR2412's primary function is to expand the number of I/O sockets and place audio input/output and AD/DA conversion closer to the sound source or stage. It does not increase the system's processing channel count and requires a mixer for audio processing and routing.
Compatibility and Cable Requirements
The AR2412 utilizes the 48kHz dSnake protocol, a layer 2, fast Ethernet protocol designed for point-to-point connections. It can be connected to dedicated dSnake ports found on Allen & Heath GLD and Qu systems, or to an intelligent SLink port configured for dSnake mode.
For detailed information on connecting, patching, and controlling the AR2412 with your specific mixer, please refer to the latest documentation available on the www.allen-heath.com website.
It is recommended to use Cat5e (or higher) Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cables. The maximum cable length between any two units should not exceed 100 meters (330 feet). Using passive couplers to extend cable runs may reduce this maximum distance.
High-quality, touring-grade cables are available through Allen & Heath dealers. More details can be found at www.allen-heath.com/ahproducts/cat5/.
Connection, Automatic Firmware Matching, and LED Behaviour
Upon powering the unit, the 'Power On' LED, located near the mains power connection, will illuminate.
When connected to a mixer, the AR2412 automatically checks and synchronizes its firmware with the mixer model and firmware version. If a firmware update is necessary, it will proceed automatically and may take up to 2 minutes to complete. During the update process, the 'Lnk/Err' LED on the dSnake port will flash red. Once the update is finished, the AR2412 will automatically reboot.
When the AR2412 is running the correct firmware and is successfully connected to a mixer, the 'Lnk/Err' LED next to the dSnake port will flash yellow to indicate link activity, and the 'Ready' LED on the front panel will illuminate.
AR2412 Front Panel Layout
The front panel of the AR2412 features several connection points and status indicators:
- 1. Input Sockets: 24 balanced XLR connectors for mic/line inputs. The preamps are integrated into the AR2412, with Gain, Pad, and 48V phantom power controlled remotely from the mixer via the dSNAKE link. Refer to your mixer's documentation for patching these inputs to channels or other system destinations.
- 2. Output Sockets: 12 balanced XLR connectors providing nominal +4dBu line level outputs. Consult your mixer's documentation for information on patching output signals to these sockets.
- 3. dSNAKE Port: An EtherCon/RJ45 socket for direct connection to the mixer. This port carries all audio inputs, outputs, ME/monitor sends, preamp control signals, and system status messages.
- 4. EXPANDER Port: An EtherCon/RJ45 socket used to connect a ME/monitor system.
- 5. EXPANDER Port: Another EtherCon/RJ45 socket, used to connect an AB168, an AR84, or a ME/monitor system.
Note: EtherCon locking connectors are recommended to prevent accidental disconnection and protect cables and ports from damage.
