Product Overview
The Matrix Rower-02 is designed for commercial use. It offers a robust and engaging cardiovascular workout. This manual is essential for ensuring safe and effective operation.
The product is identified as ROWER-02, with Part # 1000353728 and Revision 1.6 A, © 2016 Johnson Health Tech.
Important Safety Instructions
It is the sole responsibility of the purchaser to instruct all individuals on the proper usage of the equipment. All users must be informed of the following prior to use.
General Precautions:
- Read all instructions before assembling and using the Rower to ensure safety and protect the unit.
- Ensure all users read this manual and make it part of your facility's training program.
- Users should obtain a complete physical examination from their physician before undertaking any fitness program.
- If experiencing dizziness, pain, shortness of breath, or nausea during exercise, stop immediately.
Operating Precautions:
- Use the Rower only for its intended purpose as described in this manual. Do not use unrecommended attachments.
- Never drop or insert objects into any opening. If an object falls inside, retrieve it carefully while the unit is off. Contact Matrix Fitness or authorized dealers if unreachable.
- Do not operate if the Rower is not working properly, is damaged, or has been immersed in water. Return it for examination and repair.
- Keep hands and feet clear of moving parts at all times.
- Do not reach into or underneath the unit, and do not tip it on its side during operation.
- Do not use outdoors, near swimming pools, or in areas of high humidity.
- Do not operate where aerosol products are used or when oxygen is administered.
- Do not remove side shrouds; service must be performed by an authorized technician.
- Close supervision is required when used near children, invalids, or disabled people. Keep young children and pets at least three meters (ten feet) away when the Rower is in use.
- Assemble and operate on a solid, level surface with at least one meter (three feet) clearance from obstructions.
- Do not wear clothing that might catch on moving parts.
- Place the handle in hooks before letting go. Do not let the handle fly into the console bracket.
- Perform proper maintenance as described in the Maintenance section.
CAUTION: If you experience chest pain, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath, stop exercising immediately and consult a physician.
CAUTION: Any changes or modifications to this equipment could void the product warranty.
Getting Started
Read the Owner's Manual before setting up the Matrix Rower. Place the unit where it will be used before beginning the setup procedure.
Choosing a Location
The site should be well-lit and well-ventilated. Place the Rower on a structurally solid flat surface, a few feet from walls or other equipment. If using on plush carpet, place a rigid plastic base underneath to protect the carpeting and machinery. Avoid areas of high humidity (steam rooms, indoor pools, saunas) as water vapor or chlorine can affect electronics and machine parts.
Before Your First Row
- Consult your physician to ensure it is safe to undertake a strenuous exercise program.
- Be aware that improper technique (e.g., extreme layback, jumping off the seat) can result in injury.
- Start each workout with several minutes of easy rowing for a warm-up.
- Begin gradually, rowing no more than 5 minutes on the first day.
- Increase rowing time and intensity gradually over the first two weeks. Do not row at full power until comfortable with the technique and have rowed for at least a week. Rapid increases in volume/intensity, inadequate warm-ups, or poor technique increase injury risk.
- For cardiovascular workouts, a resistance setting of 3-5 is recommended. Higher settings may reduce output and increase injury risk.
- Aim for a stroke rate (spm) of 24-30 strokes per minute.
Assembly and Setup
Unpacking
The Rower is shipped in multiple pieces for compact packaging. Before assembly, confirm all components by matching them with the exploded diagrams. Carefully unpack and dispose of packing materials according to local laws.
CAUTION: Get assistance when removing frame pieces to avoid injury and damage.
Rower Location
Place the equipment on a level, stable surface away from direct sunlight. Intense UV light can discolor plastics. Locate in an area with cool temperatures and low humidity. Ensure a minimum clearance width of 0.6 meters (24 inches) for access and passage; 0.91 meters (36 inches) is recommended for individuals in wheelchairs. Do not place where it blocks vents or air openings. Avoid garages, covered patios, areas near water, or outdoors. Store the vertical unit on a solid, level surface.
Storage
CAUTION: Use care when storing rowers in an upright position. While tested for stability, accidental contact may knock over an upright rower. Handle with care. Store in a protected area to prevent accidental contact. Keep people away from upright stored rowers unless they are storing or retrieving them.
Storage Dimensions: Approximately 0.6 meters (2 ft) wide and 0.6 meters (2 ft) deep when stored vertically.

Advanced Features
Using the Heart Rate Function
The heart rate function is an exercise aid, not a medical device. Consult a physician for general heart rate trend analysis.
Wireless Heart Rate Receiver
Use with a wireless chest transmitter (sold separately). Moisten the two rubber electrodes with water. Center the strap below the pectoral muscles, over the sternum, with the logo facing out. Ensure the strap is tight and properly placed for accurate readings. An improperly placed strap may result in erratic readings.
Brake System and Watts Table
The Matrix rower uses magnetic resistance. The resistance level and SPM (strokes per minute) determine the power (watts) output.
WARNING! Heart rate monitoring systems may be inaccurate. Over-exercising can result in serious injury or death. If you feel faint, stop exercising immediately.
Maintenance
General Maintenance
- Do not use damaged or worn parts. Use only authorized replacement parts from your local MATRIX dealer.
- Do not remove labels; they contain important information. Contact your dealer for replacements if unreadable or missing.
- Preventative maintenance is key to smooth operation and minimizing liability. Equipment requires regular inspection.
- Ensure maintenance or repair is performed by qualified personnel. MATRIX dealers can provide service and training.
Daily Maintenance
Listen for loose fasteners or unusual noises indicating service needs. Clean the rower before and after each workout.
- Use a damp, soft cloth with water or mild liquid detergent to clean exposed surfaces. Avoid ammonia, chlorine, or acid-based cleaners.
- Keep the display console free of fingerprints and sweat build-up.
- Vacuum the floor underneath the unit to prevent dust accumulation, which can affect smooth operation.
