Fitness Goals
Heart rate zones help measure and improve fitness. Training in specific zones can enhance cardiovascular capacity. Use the provided tables or online calculators to determine your heart rate zones based on maximum heart rate (default: 220 minus age).
About Heart Rate Zones
Heart rate zones are ranges of heartbeats per minute, categorized from 1 to 5 by intensity. They are typically calculated as percentages of maximum heart rate and offer benefits like improved aerobic capacity and anaerobic threshold.
Heart Rate Zone Calculations
Zone | % of Maximum Heart Rate | Perceived Exertion | Benefits |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 50-60% | Relaxed, easy pace, rhythmic breathing, conversation possible | Beginning-level aerobic training, reduces stress |
3 | 70-80% | Moderate pace, more difficult to hold conversation | Improved aerobic capacity, optimal cardiovascular training |
4 | 80-90% | Fast pace and a bit uncomfortable, breathing forceful | Improved anaerobic capacity and threshold, improved speed |
5 | 90-100% | Sprint pace, unsustainable for long period of time, labored breathing | Anaerobic and muscular endurance, increased power |
VO2 Max. Standard Ratings
Tables provide standardized classifications for VO2 max. estimates by age and gender for males and females, categorized as Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor.
