JL Audio XDM1000/5 1000W 5-Channel System Amplifier
This document serves as the owner's manual for the JL Audio XDM1000/5 5-Channel System Amplifier, detailing its features, installation, and operation.
Safety and Installation Considerations
Safety First:
- This product is designed for 12-volt, negative-ground electrical systems only. It is not certified for aircraft use.
- Ensure secure mounting to prevent damage or injury, especially in demanding conditions.
- An appropriate fuse (or circuit breaker) must be installed within 18 inches (45 cm) of the positive battery connection for vehicle/vessel safety. For ABYC and NMEA applications, circuit protection is required within 7 inches (18 cm) of the battery, unless the cable is in an enclosure or conduit.
- Listen to your audio system at safe volume levels appropriate for operating conditions and hearing safety.
Installation Guidelines:
- Professional installation is recommended. Ensure you have the necessary tools and safety equipment.
- Turn off the audio system and disconnect the battery before installation.
- Install the amplifier in a dry, well-ventilated location, away from factory-installed systems.
- Avoid installation in the engine compartment, areas of extreme heat, or direct exposure to the elements.
- Before cutting or drilling, check for hidden obstacles behind mounting surfaces.
- Route all wiring away from moving parts and sharp edges. Use cable ties, clamps, grommets, and loom for protection.
Connections
The amplifier features several connection terminals:
- +12VDC: Positive (+12V) Power Connection. Requires 4 AWG wire. Install an 80A fuse at the positive battery post.
- Ground: Negative (GND) Ground Connection. Requires 4 AWG wire. Accepts 18-12 AWG wire.
- Remote: Positive (+12V) Activation Connection. See 'Turn On Mode' for details.
- Input Channels (CH. 1-4, SUB CH.): RCA inputs for left and right signals for main channels and subwoofer. Accepts 200mV-4V input voltage.
- Remote Level Control: Connection for an optional remote level controller (HD-RLC or MHD-RLC).
- Speaker Outputs: Terminals for connecting speakers for each channel (CH. 1, CH. 2, CH. 3, CH. 4, and Subwoofer). Minimum impedance loads are 2 ohms for stereo and 4 ohms for bridged mode. Accepts 16-8 AWG wire.

Controls and Settings
The amplifier features various controls for tuning and operation:
- Status LED: Indicates amplifier status (e.g., Green for normal operation, Red for over-current, Amber for over-temperature, Off for low voltage).
- Turn On Mode: Configures the activation method (+12V Remote, DC Offset-Sensing, or Signal-Sensing).
- Input Filter: Configures the input filter application (defeatable, HP, BP).
- Input Mode: Configures input signal connections (2 Ch., 4 Ch., 6 Ch.).
- Remote Level Mode: Adjusts the level of all channels equally or only the subwoofer channel.
- Input Sens.: Adjusts the input stage sensitivity for each channel pair.
- HP Filter Mode & Freq. (CH. 1&2, CH. 3&4): High-pass filter settings to control the cutoff frequency.
- LP Filter Mode & Freq. (SUB CH.): Low-pass filter settings for the subwoofer channel.

Appendix A: Input Sensitivity Level Setting
This section details a nine-step procedure for setting the input sensitivity of each amplifier channel pair to achieve optimal system balance. It requires a digital AC voltmeter and a sine-wave test tone.
Key Steps:
- Disconnect speakers from amplifier outputs.
- Turn off all sound processing on source units and amplifiers. Set fader to center and subwoofer level to 3/4.
- Turn all 'Input Sens.' controls fully down.
- Set source unit volume to 3/4.
- Determine target voltage using the provided chart based on speaker impedance.
- Play the sine-wave test tone at 3/4 source unit volume.
- Connect the AC voltmeter to the speaker output terminals.
- Increase 'Input Sens.' until the target voltage is observed.
- Reconnect speakers. Adjust 'Input Sens.' controls downward if necessary.
Important Note: Do not exceed the maximum 'Input Sens.' level established during this procedure, as it can cause audible distortion and speaker damage. Re-adjust 'Input Sens.' if EQ boost is applied after initial setup.
