Medela Pump & Save Breast Milk Bags
Instructions for Use and Storage
Collecting Breast Milk
- The bag features a label area for writing information.
- Gently open the zip-top closure, taking care not to tear the perforated top edge.
- Place the bag around the collar of the breast shield.
- Peel off the yellow strap from its backing where indicated and unfold it.
- Wrap the yellow strap over the top of the breast shield.
- Peel the paper tab from the end of the strap and stick it to the opposite side of the bag. [Caution: Keep paper tab away from children due to swallowing risk.]
- Begin pumping. Do not fill the bag beyond the 150 ml mark.
- After pumping, tear off the bag along the perforation just above the label area. The pleated bottom allows the bag to stand upright.
- To remove the strap from the breast shield, tear the strap and discard the top portion of the bag.
- Flatten the bag above the milk to remove excess air, then close the zip.
Hygiene
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the breast and pump parts. Avoid touching the inside of the breast milk bag. Clean the breast and surrounding area with a damp cloth. Do not use soap or alcohol, as they can dry the skin and cause cracked nipples.
Storing and Thawing Breast Milk
(For Healthy Term Babies)
Storage Guidelines for Freshly Expressed Breast Milk
- Room temperature: 4-6 hours at 19-26°C (66-78°F).
- Refrigerator: 3-8 days at 4°C (39°F) or lower.

Storage Recommendations

- Expressed breast milk can be frozen in milk bottles or Pump & Save bags. Do not fill bottles or bags more than 3/4 full to allow for expansion.
- Label bottles or Pump & Save bags with the date of expression.
Thawing and Warming Caution
Do not thaw frozen breast milk or warm breast milk in a microwave or a pan of boiling water to avoid loss of vitamins, minerals, and other important components, and to prevent burns.
- To preserve the components of breast milk, thaw the milk in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, hold the bottle or Pump & Save bag under warm water (max. 37°C).
- Gently swirl the bottle or Pump & Save bag to mix any fat that has separated. Avoid shaking or stirring the milk vigorously.
