Model Description
The 1986 model year reintroduced the convertible body style, which had been absent since 1975. The Corvette Coupe's structure required significant frame reworking to accommodate the convertible top, leading to reduced creaks over bumps. The C4 Convertible served as the official pace car for the Indy 500 that year, with 7,315 convertibles shipped with an "Official Pace Car" decal for owners to apply. The L98 engine received new aluminum heads, increasing horsepower by approximately 5 hp. Early heads had issues with cracking under high load and were later replaced with thicker versions featuring larger intake ports and copper-core spark plugs. Triple catalytic converters were added to meet EPA regulations, and the gas tank capacity for automatic models was reduced by two gallons. For 1986, Bosch ABS became standard on all Corvettes, and a government-mandated high-mount center brake light was added, located where the rear window meets the roof, distinguishing these models from earlier C4s. The Pass Key I passive anti-theft system was also introduced, using a pellet in the key, though its limited 15-type selection made it vulnerable to theft.
Enthusiastic collectors of the C4 may be interested in the "Malcom Koner Special Edition" coupes, honoring a New Jersey dealer with a unique two-tone paint scheme. Only 50 were built. GM produced 35,109 Corvettes for the 1986 model year, with a base price around $26,000.

Vehicle's Condition Classification
#1. Concours
Vehicles are the best in the world, presented perfectly clean, groomed to the tire treads. Painted and chromed surfaces are mirror-like. Dust and dirt are banned, and materials used are correct and superbly fitted.
#2. Excellent
Vehicles could win a local or regional show, potentially former #1 vehicles that have been driven or aged. Seasoned observers may find minor flaws. Paint, chrome, glass, and finishes appear excellent. The vehicle drives as a new vehicle of its era would.
#3. Good
Vehicles drive and run well but are not used for daily transportation. Casual observers will not find visual flaws, but some incorrect parts may be present. These vehicles may have some issues of a #4 vehicle but are balanced by factors like fresh paint or a new, correct interior.
#4. Fair
Vehicles are daily drivers with visible flaws. Chrome may have pitting, the windshield might be chipped, and the body may have minor dents. Imperfect paintwork, split seams, or a cracked dash may be present. No major parts are missing, but non-stock additions might exist. A #4 vehicle can also be a deteriorated restoration.
