Handling Your Watch

(1) Water Resistance

The water resistance of your watch is indicated by a rating, typically found on the case back or dial. It is crucial to understand these ratings to prevent damage.

Type Usage Conditions Exposure to Small Amounts of Water (Washing, Rain, etc.) Water Sports (Swimming, etc.), Frequent Water Contact (Car Washing, etc.) Scuba Diving (without oxygen tanks) Scuba Diving (with oxygen tanks) Crown Operation Underwater or with Water Drops on Crown
Non-water resistant Watches without WATER RESISTANT marking on the case back.
Water resistant for everyday use Watches with WATER RESISTANT marking on the case back.
Enhanced water resistance Class I for everyday use Watches with 50M (5 BAR) marking on the case back or dial, and WATER RESISTANT marking on the case back.
Enhanced water resistance Class II for everyday use Watches with 100M (10 BAR), 150M (15 BAR), 200M (20 BAR) marking on the case back or dial, and WATER RESISTANT marking on the case back.

* It is recommended to use your watch carefully, following the instructions above. Before use, check for water resistance markings on the dial or case back.

Water Resistance Details

Warning

  1. Watches with 30M (3 bar) water resistance for everyday use can be used for activities like washing hands, but not for submersion.
  2. Watches with enhanced water resistance for everyday use, Class I (50M/5 bar), can be used for swimming, but not for diving or underwater swimming.
  3. Watches with enhanced water resistance, Class II (100M or 200M / 10 or 20 bar), can be used for diving or underwater swimming, but not for scuba diving with oxygen tanks or helium-filled breathing apparatus.

Attention

  1. When operating the watch, the crown must be in the pushed-in (normal) position. If the crown is screw-locked, ensure it is tightly screwed in.
  2. Do not operate the crown underwater or when the watch is wet. Water may penetrate the case and compromise its water resistance.
  3. If your watch is not water-resistant, avoid splashes (washing, rain, etc.) and condensation. If water gets on the watch or condensation forms, wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
  4. Even if your watch is water-resistant for everyday use, avoid exposure to strong water jets. Exceeding the permissible water pressure can compromise water resistance.
  5. If your water-resistant watch for everyday use comes into contact with seawater, shake off the water and wipe the case dry to prevent corrosion or other damage.
  6. The inside of the watch case contains a small amount of moisture. When the ambient temperature drops below the temperature inside the watch, condensation may form on the inner surface of the glass. If this condensation is temporary, it does not harm the watch. However, if it persists or water enters the watch, consult your point of purchase and do not ignore the problem.

Other Precautions

(2) Shock Resistance

Remove your watch during strenuous sports, although activities like golf are unlikely to cause damage. Avoid strong impacts, such as dropping the watch on the floor.

(3) Magnetic Field Exposure

Do not expose the watch to strong magnetic fields for extended periods, as internal components may become magnetized, leading to malfunction. Be cautious. Exposure to magnetic fields may cause the watch to run fast or slow temporarily. Accuracy will be restored once the magnetic field is removed. In such cases, reset the time.

(4) Vibration

Watches may lose accuracy if subjected to strong vibrations, such as from motorcycle riding, using a jackhammer, or a chainsaw.

(5) Temperature

The watch may run incorrectly or stop at temperatures below or above the normal range (5°C – 35°C).

Attention

Do not wear the watch in high temperatures (e.g., sauna), as it may become hot and cause burns.

(6) Chemical Substances, Gases, etc.

Exercise maximum caution when in contact with gases, mercury, chemical substances (paint thinner, gasoline, various solvents, cleaning agents containing such substances, adhesives, paints, medications, perfumes, cosmetics, etc.). These substances can alter the color of the watch case, bracelet/strap, and dial. Color changes, deformation, and damage to polymer components are also possible.

(7) Additional Details

Warning

Do not give bracelet pins or other small parts to children. If a small part is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

(8) Allergic Reactions

Attention

If you experience a rash or irritation on your skin after contact with the bracelet, stop wearing the watch and consult a doctor immediately.

(9) Luminescent Coating

The hands and hour markers have a luminescent coating. It is made from safe, non-radioactive paint that absorbs sunlight and artificial light, emitting it in the dark. The brightness and duration of the glow depend on various factors: glass shape, paint thickness, ambient light level, and distance from the light source. If only a small amount of light is absorbed, the watch will glow dimly or for a short time.

(10) Waterproof Strap

Some models use leather and nylon straps that have undergone special treatment for sweat and water resistance. The waterproof property of these straps may diminish depending on usage period and conditions.

Identifying Model and Caliber Numbers

Check your watch's caliber number using the model number or case code on the case back.

1. Finding the 10-digit Model Number

Check the 10-digit model number on the warranty card or the product label attached to the watch. The second and third characters of the number indicate your watch's caliber number.

Example: If the model number is "CDH00001B0", the caliber number is "DH".

2. Finding the Case Code

Locate the case code on the back of your watch case. The first two characters indicate the watch's caliber number.

Diagram of watch case back showing "Case Code" label and example markings like "WATER RESISTANT 50M", "SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL", "ORIENT WATCH CO., LTD."

Example: If the case code is "DH00-C0", the caliber number is "DH".

* The position of the case code may vary depending on the watch's characteristics; its characters may be small and difficult to distinguish.

* Illustrations in this manual may differ from your actual watch, but functions and operating procedures remain the same.

Attention

* It is not recommended to adjust the date between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM, as the date changes during this period. Adjusting the date during this time may result in it not changing correctly or causing a malfunction. When setting the date, always move the hour and minute hands to a different time period first. (See Note 1)

Automatic Winding Mechanism

(1) This watch is mechanical and features an automatic winding function.

(2) When worn on the wrist, the mainspring is wound by natural arm movements.

(3) If the watch stops, shake it gently at least ten times to start the second hand. After the second hand starts moving, set the date and time (dual time or world time).

(4) With a full wind, the watch will run for approximately 40 hours. If the watch is not sufficiently wound, its accuracy may deviate from the stated specifications. To ensure accuracy, it is recommended to wear the watch for at least 8 hours a day.

Models with Screw-Lock Crown

On some models, the crown cannot be pulled out without unscrewing it (screw-lock crown models).

To operate these watches:

  1. Before setting the date and time (dual time), turn the crown counter-clockwise to unlock it.
  2. After setting the date and time (dual time), push the crown in and turn it clockwise until it stops to lock it.

Power Reserve Indicator

The remaining time is indicated approximately. The displayed time may differ from the actual power reserve. This automatic watch is equipped with a power reserve indicator. When worn on the wrist, the mainspring is automatically wound by natural arm movements. The power reserve hand indicates the position of a full wind (40 hours). The winding level changes depending on the intensity of arm movements and the duration of wear, so the hand does not always point to the full wind position. If the watch is removed and not wound manually, the power reserve hand will gradually move towards zero.

Setting the Time

  1. Pull the crown out to the second click. The second hand does not stop on calibers DH and FB; pull the crown out when the second hand reaches the 12 o'clock position.
  2. Turn the crown clockwise to set the current time. Since the watch has a calendar, ensure you set the correct AM/PM time. The date changes at midnight. When setting the time, first move the hands slightly backward from the actual time, then move them forward to the correct time.
  3. Push the crown back to its original (unlocked) position.

Setting the Date

  1. Pull the crown out to the first click. On these watches, the crown can be pulled out to the first or second click.
  2. Turn the crown counter-clockwise until the current date is set.
  3. Push the crown back to its original (unlocked) position.
Diagrams illustrating date setting: pulling the crown to the first click, turning the crown counter-clockwise, and pushing the crown back in.

The position of the crown, date indicator, and other components may differ on some models.

Date Correction at the End of the Month: If a month has 30 days or fewer, the date needs manual correction. Set the date to the [1st] of the following month. If you moved the hands far forward when setting the time, move them slightly backward from the correct time, then forward again to set the correct time.

Using the Dual Time Function [DH (48K)]

The dual time function allows simultaneous display of two time readings. This watch displays two times using hands and a 24-hour indicator.

(1) Setting the 24-Hour Indicator

Before setting the 24-hour indicator, ensure the watch is showing the correct time. The 24-hour indication moves synchronously with the time indication. Set the time before adjusting the indicator.

(See [Setting the Time].)

  1. Pull the crown out to the first click. On these watches, the crown can be pulled out to two clicks.
  2. Turn the crown clockwise to set the 24-hour indicator to the desired time. (The 24-hour indication advances in 30-minute increments.)
  3. Push the crown back to its normal position.
Diagrams illustrating setting the 24-hour indicator: pulling the crown, turning it clockwise, and pushing it back in.

* The position of the crown and 24-hour indicator may differ on some models.

(2) Example of Dual Time Usage

To set the 24-hour indicator for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as a second time reading, if it is 5:00 PM in Japan, set the 24-hour indicator to 8:00 AM, as the time difference is 9 hours. (See "Setting the 24-Hour Indicator".) To check time differences, refer to the "Comparative Table of Standard Times".

Using the Rotating Bezel Indicator (World Time Function) [EY (46H), FA (46K), FB (46L)]

Using the Rotating Bezel Indicator

Note that some models are equipped with a rotating bezel indicator, which should be used correctly.

Rotate the bezel so that the marker aligns with the minute hand. As time passes, you can measure the elapsed time by the distance between the minute hand and the numbers on the rotating bezel. You can also set the marker ∇ to a desired time to remind yourself how much time remains until a specific event.

Diagram of the rotating bezel, showing markings for elapsed time and the use of a marker (∇).

The ring cannot be rotated in the opposite direction because it is equipped with a safety mechanism to protect against accidental operation due to force or impact. The numbers on the rotating bezel can also simplify reading the current time.

* Depending on the design, the reverse rotation protection and 1-minute "click" may be absent on some models.
