Information on Returning Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Certain retailers are obligated to accept returns of WEEE free of charge.

Retailers with a sales area of at least 400 m² for electrical and electronic equipment, and food retailers with a total sales area of at least 800 m², who regularly offer and sell electrical and electronic equipment, are required to take back old equipment under the following circumstances:

  1. When selling new electrical or electronic equipment, the retailer must take back old equipment of the same type, which provides essentially the same function as the new device, free of charge. This must occur at the point of sale or in close proximity. Private households are also considered the point of sale if the product is delivered there, in which case old equipment will be collected free of charge for the end-user.
  2. Retailers must take back old equipment with an outer dimension of less than 25 cm upon request at the point of sale or in close proximity. This return does not need to be linked to the purchase of new electrical or electronic equipment and is limited to three old devices per device type.

When concluding a purchase contract for new electrical or electronic equipment, the retailer must inform the end-user of their right to return or have old equipment collected free of charge and ask if they intend to return old equipment upon delivery of the new device.

This also applies to distance selling if the storage and shipping area for electrical and electronic equipment is at least 400 m², or if the total storage and shipping area is at least 800 m². The free collection of electrical or electronic equipment is limited to the following categories:

  • 1 (Heat exchangers)
  • 2 (Devices with displays)
  • 4 (Large devices with at least one outer dimension exceeding 50 cm)

For all other electrical and electronic equipment, retailers must ensure that take-back points are reasonably accessible to the end-user. This also applies to old devices where no outer dimension exceeds 25 cm, which the end-user wishes to return without purchasing new equipment.

Data Protection: All end-users of waste electrical and electronic equipment are responsible for deleting any personal data from the equipment before disposal.

WEEE Registration Number: Husqvarna 10168717

Collection and Recycling Rates: EU member states are obliged to collect data on WEEE and submit it to the European Commission. Further information can be found on the BMUV website: https://www.bmuv.de/themen/wasser-ressourcen-abfall/kreislaufwirtschaft/statistiken/elektro-und-elektronikaltgeraete
