Connect the appliance to an earthed 230 V mains socket. Failure to do so may result in fatal injury from electric shock. Respect safety guidelines in section 2.3.
Place your machine on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface away from water splashes and heat sources. Ensure sufficient ventilation as the appliance gives off heat. Do not place on surfaces like marble. Remove the protective film from the display panel (18).
The drip tray (13) collects water or coffee that may flow out during and after preparation. Always leave it in place and empty it regularly.
Switch on the appliance by pressing the ON / OFF button (26). The WMF logo appears on the screen. Follow the instructions provided on the appliance (refer to figures A1–A15).
When using the machine for the first time, you will be prompted to configure various settings. Follow the indications displayed on the screen.
6.1| Measuring the Water Hardness
Set the machine according to water hardness (0 to 4). Follow these steps:
- Before first use, check water hardness to set the appliance accordingly. Re-check if water hardness changes or if using in a different location.
- Use the supplied test strip (22) or contact your local water authority.
Water Hardness Classes:
DEGREE OF HARDNESS | dH | e | f | Appliance Setting | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
CLASS 0 | < 3 | < 3.75 | < 5.4 | 0 | very soft |
CLASS 1 | > 4 | > 5 | > 7.2 | 1 | soft |

- Install the filter in the appliance.
- ONLY screw the filter into the bottom of the water tank using the supplied accessory (17) (figures A4–A5).
- Set the filter fitting month (position 1) by turning the grey ring. The replacement month is indicated in position 2.
- Fill the water tank after filter installation.
- Place a 0.6 l container under the steam exit (figure A8). The machine must be primed to fill water circuits. Follow screen instructions.
- The machine fills water circuits, preheats them, and completes an automatic rinse. The screen will confirm completion.
7| Important Information Before Preparing Drinks
7.1| Preparing the Appliance
- Remove and fill the water tank (16) (figures A3–A6).
- Replace the water tank (16) (figure A7).
- Open the coffee bean container lid (1) and add coffee beans (max. 250 g) (figures A12–A13).
- Replace the coffee bean container lid (1) (figure A14).
[CAUTION] Do not fill the water tank (16) with hot water, milk, or other liquids.
[CAUTION] Never put ground coffee in the coffee container. Avoid using oily, caramelized, or flavored coffee beans as they may damage the appliance. Ensure coffee beans do not contain foreign particles (like grit), as damage from these will invalidate the guarantee. Do not put water into the coffee bean container.
7.2| Preparing the Grinder
The machine automatically adjusts the ground coffee quantity based on selected drinks and strength.
You can also set coffee strength by adjusting the grinding fineness. Finer grinding generally results in stronger, creamier coffee. Different coffee types may require different settings; fine for espresso, coarser for regular coffee.
Adjust fineness using the slider (2) on top of the appliance (figure A14).
[CAUTION] On new products, the grinder position is factory-set and should not be changed for 30 recipes to allow it to settle. If coffee dispenses too slowly, move the slider one notch towards coarser.
[NOTE] Apply this setting notch by notch during grinding. A noticeable taste difference will occur after 3 recipes. Adjusting more than one notch towards 'fine' at once may trigger an alert asking for a coarser setting.
Grinding fineness adjustment is useful for changing coffee types or strength, but systematic adjustment is not advised.
7.3| Adjusting the Coffee Outlet
The coffee outlets (15) can be moved up or down according to cup size (figure A15).
[NOTE] Splashing or scalding may occur if coffee outlets (15) are too high relative to the cup.
8| Preparing Drinks
Preparation: Place cup(s) under the coffee nozzles. Press the button for the desired drink.
8.1| Coffee Drinks
Possible settings: Adjust coffee strength by selecting the number of coffee beans displayed. Prepare one or two cups using the '+' button (figure C3).
Adjust coffee volume using the quantity scale on the screen (before or during preparation). The process involves grinding, tamping, and brewing. Press STOP to interrupt at any time.
8.2| Teas / Hot Water
Possible settings: Prepare hot water for teas or herbal teas.
- Model 840: One hot water recipe; temperature and volume are adjustable.
- Models 860, 880, 890: Three tea types (black, white, green); hot water temperature adapts to selection; volume is adjustable.
8.3| Milky Drinks
Before recipe launch:
- Connect the slimmer, longer side of the milk tube connector (12) to the One Touch Cappuccino block (6) (figure D1). [NOTE] Ensure the connector is securely inserted for recipe quality.
- Immerse the other end in milk or a milk bottle (figure D3).
- Place cup(s) under the coffee/milk nozzles (figure D6).
Possible settings: Adjust coffee strength and drink size. Steam froths the milk; this requires preheating. The machine allows adjusting milk foam quantity for various recipes.
Press STOP to pause or '>>' to advance to the next step (for multi-step recipes).
[NOTE] Volume cannot be modified during milky drink preparation.
Cleaning after milky drinks: The screen prompts 'Clean milk?'. Rinsing after each use is advised for cleanliness and foam quality.
[NOTE] For best results, regularly clean the removable One Touch Cappuccino block (6) (see section 11).
If milk foam quality degrades, repeat rinsing and cleaning. Insufficient maintenance causes this.
[NOTE] Automatic rinsing occurs when the machine switches off, depending on preparation type. The cycle is brief.
8.4| Ground Coffee Recipes
Prepare coffee and milky drinks using ground coffee. Use the 'Ground Coffee' option from the home screen or a profile. After setting your recipe and pressing START, open the pre ground coffee funnel (3). Insert one spoonful of ground coffee using the provided spoon (7). Close the hatch. Repeat if necessary. Press OK to execute. Two spoonfuls (one after another) are recommended for good coffee taste.
[CAUTION] Do not put more than 1 spoonful of ground coffee in the funnel (3) at once. Do not use more than 2 spoonfuls per recipe; damage from excessive amounts is not covered by the guarantee.
[CAUTION] Do not put anything other than ground coffee in the funnel; damage from other substances is not covered by the guarantee.
[NOTE] Never open the pre ground coffee funnel (3) during recipe preparation; this stops the process and triggers automatic maintenance after closing.
Ground coffee recipes can be made even without coffee beans. If a cycle is interrupted, the appliance prompts to close the hatch before running maintenance.

Do not tamp ground coffee in the hatch before closing to avoid sticking. |
Using steam | Steam nozzle partially or completely blocked. | Dismantle nozzle from support using the dismantling key (figure F4). Replace support without nozzle. Start rinse cycle for One Touch Cappuccino block to remove deposits. Clean steam nozzle, ensuring opening is not obstructed by milk residue or limescale. Use cleaning needle (figure F5) if necessary. |
Using steam | No steam comes out of the steam nozzle. | Ensure steam nozzle is not blocked (see above). If issue persists, empty water tank, temporarily remove Claris filter. Fill tank with high-calcium mineral water (>100 mg/l) and run 5-10 steam cycles into a container until a continuous steam jet is obtained. Replace filter and use regular water. |
