Precautions
Please read the following operating precautions before use. Yamaha will not be held responsible for any damage and/or injury caused by not following the cautions below.
Safe and Proper Use
- To assure the finest performance, read this manual carefully and keep it in a safe place for future reference.
- Install the speakers in a cool, dry, clean place away from heat sources, excessive vibration, dust, moisture, cold, and electrical humming sources (e.g., transformers, motors). Avoid exposure to rain or water to prevent fire or electric shock.
- Do not expose speakers to direct sunlight or excessive humidity to prevent enclosure warping or discoloration.
- Avoid installing speakers where foreign objects may fall onto them or where they may be exposed to liquid dripping or splashing.
- Do not place objects on top of the speakers, as they may cause damage, discoloration, fire, or electric shock.
- Ensure stable placement to prevent speakers from being knocked over or struck by falling objects, which also ensures better sound performance.
- Placing speakers on the same shelf as a turntable may result in feedback.
- Do not insert hands or objects into the speaker port or lift the speaker by holding the port, as this may cause personal injury or damage.
- If distortion is noted, reduce the amplifier's volume control. Never allow the amplifier to operate in "clipping" mode, as this can damage the speakers.
- When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the speakers' nominal input power, take care not to exceed the speakers' maximum input.
- Clean speakers with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use chemical solvents, as they may damage the finish. For difficult soils, use a soft cloth dampened with water and wrung out.
- Do not attempt to modify or repair the speakers yourself. Contact qualified Yamaha service personnel for service. The cabinet should never be opened.
- Secure placement or installation is the owner's responsibility. Yamaha is not liable for accidents caused by improper placement or installation.
Information for Users on Collection and Disposal of Old Equipment
This symbol indicates that used electrical and electronic products should not be mixed with general household waste. Take old products to applicable collection points for proper treatment, recovery, and recycling, in accordance with national legislation and relevant directives. Proper disposal helps conserve resources and prevent negative environmental or health effects. For more information, contact your local municipality, waste disposal service, or point of sale. This symbol is valid in the European Union; for other countries, contact local authorities or dealers for correct disposal methods.
Taking Care of the Speaker
Use a clean, dry cloth for cleaning. Avoid chemical solvents like alcohol or thinners, which can damage the finish. For stubborn dirt, dampen a soft cloth with water, wring it out thoroughly, and then wipe the speaker. For models with a polish finish, be careful not to bump the surface with hard objects like metal or porcelain, as this can cause the finish to crack or peel.
Supplied Accessory
Make sure the package contains the item shown. One 4-meter (13.1 ft) speaker cable is included.
Precautions When Positioning the Speakers
The speaker's weight is concentrated in its upper portion, making it susceptible to tipping if not properly stabilized. Tipping can damage the speaker, other property, or cause serious injury.
For Safe and Proper Use
- Position the speaker on a solid, level, smooth, and low surface relative to the floor.
- Do not push or apply pressure to the side of the speaker when moving it, or lean objects against its side.
- Do not sit on or place objects on top of the speaker.
- Vibrations from earthquakes or other sources may cause the speaker to fall. Consider using commercially available products (e.g., metal fittings, chains) to increase stability.
Notes on Positioning
- It is advisable to have another person assist when moving the speaker.
- Be careful to avoid scratching the speaker's surface.
- Avoid applying force to the side of the speaker to prevent it from falling, which could cause damage or injury.
- Secure loose speaker cables to the floor to prevent tripping accidents.
- Placing the speakers too close to CRT televisions may affect picture color or cause buzzing noise. Move the speakers away from the TV if this occurs. This is not an issue with LCD and plasma TVs.
- For the NS-F140 model only, commercially available legs or spikes can be installed on the bottom of the speaker to enhance stability and sound quality. The screw holes on the bottom are 8 mm (1/3") in diameter and 18 mm (2/3") deep. Refer to the instruction manual provided with the legs/spikes for installation details.
Placing the Speakers
Using as 2ch Stereo Speakers
For optimal stereo imaging, position the speakers slightly angled inwards towards the listener.
Using as Front Speakers in a Multi-channel System
Position the speakers on both sides of the TV. Speaker placement is crucial for overall sound quality in a multi-channel system. Set up speakers based on your listening position, following the owner's manual supplied with your amplifier.
Removing / Attaching the Grille
To remove the grille, gently pull it away from the speaker. To attach, align the holes on the grille with the pegs on the speaker and gently push the grille onto the speaker.
Notes:
- When removing or attaching the grille, be careful not to touch the drive units or use excessive force with tools.
- Do not touch or apply impact to the speaker's diaphragm, as this may cause malfunction.
- To avoid damaging the grille, never apply excessive force. Use its frame, and do not pull or push the surface, when removing or attaching it.
Connecting to Your Amplifier
Before making connections, ensure that the amplifier is switched off.
How to Connect the Speaker Cables
- Remove approximately 15 mm (5/8") of insulation from each end of the speaker cables. Twist the exposed conductors together neatly and tightly.
- Loosen the terminal knob on the speaker.
- Insert the bare wire into the terminal.
- Tighten the knob to secure the cable.
- Test the connection by gently pulling on the cable at the terminal to ensure it is firmly gripped.
Notes:
- Ensure the terminal grips the bare wire, not the insulation.
- Make sure the bare wires do not touch each other, as this could damage the speaker or amplifier.
- Faulty connections will result in no sound from the speaker.
Connecting to an Amplifier or Receiver
Connect one speaker to the left (marked L) terminals of your amplifier or receiver, and the other speaker to the right (marked R) terminals. Refer to your amplifier's owner's manual for specific details.
Notes on Connection
- Connect speakers with correct polarity: positive (+) terminals to positive (+) terminals, and negative (-) terminals to negative (-) terminals. Incorrect polarity can result in unnatural sound and lack of bass.
- Avoid continuously outputting sounds at high volume levels (e.g., sine waves from test discs, bass sounds from electronic instruments, or stylus contact with a record surface), as this may damage the speaker. Reduce volume if necessary.
- After connecting all speakers, plug the amplifier and other AV components into suitable AC wall outlets.
- When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the speaker's nominal input power, be careful not to exceed the speaker's maximum input power.
When Using a Banana Plug
1. Tighten the terminal knob. 2. Simply insert the banana plug into the terminal.
