Additional Safety Rules for Circular Saws
⚠️DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and blade. Keep your second hand on auxiliary handle or motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the blade.
- Keep your body positioned to either side of the blade, but not in line with the saw blade. KICKBACK could cause the saw to jump backwards.
- Do not reach underneath the work. The guard cannot protect you from the blade below the work.
Circular Saw Operation & Safety Details
- Adjust the cutting depth to the workpiece thickness. Less than a full tooth should be visible below the workpiece.
- Never hold the piece being cut in your hands or across your leg. Secure the workpiece to a stable platform.
- Check lower guard for proper closing before use. Do not operate if it does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard open. If dropped, it may bend; ensure it moves freely.
- Check the operation and condition of the lower guard spring. Service if not operating properly.
- Lower guard should be retracted manually only for special cuts (e.g., "Pocket Cuts"). Raise by Retracting Handle. Release as soon as blade enters material. For other sawing, it should operate automatically.
- Always observe that the lower guard is covering the blade before placing the saw down.
- Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when contacting hidden wiring.
- When ripping, always use a rip fence or straight edge guide.
- Always use blades with the correct size and shape arbor holes.
- Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolts.
- Avoid cutting nails. Inspect for and remove all nails from lumber before cutting.
CAUSES AND OPERATOR PREVENTION OF KICKBACK
Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound, or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator. It occurs when the blade stalls due to pinching or binding, or becomes twisted/misaligned.
Prevention:
- Maintain a firm grip with both hands and position your body to resist kickback forces.
- When blade binds or interrupting a cut, release the trigger and hold the saw motionless until the blade stops. Never attempt to remove the saw while the blade is in motion. Investigate and correct the cause of binding.
- When restarting a saw in the workpiece, center the blade in the kerf and check that teeth are not engaged.
- Support large panels to minimize pinching and kickback. Large panels can sag. Support must be placed under the panel near the line of cut.
- Do not use dull or damaged blades. Unsharpened or improperly set blades cause friction, binding, and kickback.
- Blade depth and bevel adjusting levers must be tight and secure.
- Use extra caution for "Pocket Cuts" in existing walls or blind areas.
⚠️WARNING: ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES (conforming to ANSI Z87.1 / CAN/CSA Z94.3). Use face or dust mask if cutting is dusty. ALWAYS WEAR CERTIFIED SAFETY EQUIPMENT.
⚠️WARNING: Some dust created by power activities contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm (e.g., lead, silica, arsenic, chromium). Reduce exposure by working in a well-ventilated area and using approved safety equipment (dust masks). Avoid prolonged contact with dust. Wear protective clothing and wash exposed areas.
⚠️WARNING: Use of this tool can generate dust causing serious respiratory injury. Always use NIOSH/OSHA approved respiratory protection. Direct particles away from face and body.

NOTE: Never engage blade lock while saw is running. Never turn saw on while blade lock is engaged.
TO REPLACE THE BLADE (FIG. 4)
- Depress blade lock button (L), turn spindle until lock engages. Extend clamp lever and turn clockwise (left-hand threads) to loosen clamp.
- Remove keyless blade clamp (H) and outer clamp washer (P). Remove old blade.
- Clean sawdust from guard/washer area. Check lower guard operation.
- Select proper blade (size, arbor hole, RPM). Ensure blade RPM meets or exceeds saw RPM.
- Follow steps 2 through 6 under "TO INSTALL THE BLADE", ensuring correct rotation.
LOWER BLADE GUARD
⚠️WARNING: The lower blade guard is a safety feature. Never use saw if guard is missing, damaged, misassembled, or not working properly. Check guard operation before each use. Have saw serviced if guard is missing or not working properly. Use only identical replacement parts.
Blades
⚠️WARNING: To minimize eye injury risk, always use eye protection. Foreign objects in workpiece can crack tips. Mount blade securely in proper rotation. Use a clean, sharp blade.
CAUTION: Do not cut ferrous metals (steel), masonry, glass, Hardiplank®, cement board, or tile with this saw. Do not use abrasive wheels or blades. A dull blade causes slow cutting, motor overload, splintering, and increases kickback risk.
MODEL | DIAMETER | ARBOR |
---|---|---|
DC300 | 184 mm (7-1/4") | 15.88 (5/8") |
Use only DEWALT general purpose cutting, smooth wood cutting, or non-carbide plywood/vinyl cutting blades.
For assistance with blades, call (AUS) 1800 654 155 or (NZ) 09 526 2556.
Cutting Depth Adjustment (Fig. 7)
CAUTION: TURN OFF TOOL AND REMOVE BATTERY PACK FROM SAW BEFORE CHANGING ACCESSORIES OR MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS.
- Hold saw firmly. Loosen (clockwise) depth adjustment lever (D) and move shoe to obtain desired depth.
- Retighten depth adjustment lever (counterclockwise) before operating.
For efficient cutting, set depth so one tooth projects below material. This minimizes blade friction, removes sawdust, results in cooler sawing, and reduces kickback chance.
Checking Cutting Depth (Fig. 8): Lay material next to blade to observe tooth projection.
NOTE: When using carbide-tipped blades, allow only one-half tooth to project below material.
Bevel & Shoe Adjustments
Bevel Angle Adjustment (Fig. 9)
CAUTION: TURN OFF TOOL AND REMOVE BATTERY PACK FROM SAW BEFORE CHANGING ACCESSORIES OR MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS. Full bevel range is 0° to 50°. Pivot bracket is graduated in 1° increments. Bevel adjustment mechanism uses lever (J).
TO SET THE SAW FOR A BEVEL CUT (FIG. 9)
- Raise lever (J) to loosen bevel adjustment. Tilt shoe to desired angle by aligning pointer with angle mark.
- Retighten bevel adjustment by lowering lever.
Bevel Detent
CAUTION: TURN OFF TOOL AND REMOVE BATTERY PACK FROM SAW BEFORE CHANGING ACCESSORIES OR MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS. Saw has a bevel detent feature, stopping at 22.5° and 45°.
If desired angle is at detent, retighten lever (J). If another angle is desired, continue tilting shoe until pointer aligns with mark, then retighten lever (J).
Shoe Adjustment for 90° Cuts
CAUTION: TURN OFF TOOL AND REMOVE BATTERY PACK FROM SAW BEFORE CHANGING ACCESSORIES OR MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS.
IF ADDITIONAL ADJUSTMENT IS NEEDED (FIG. 10)
- Adjust saw to 0° bevel.
- Retract blade guard. Place saw on blade side.
- Loosen bevel adjustment lever. Place square against blade and shoe.
- Turn adjustment screw (K) on underside of shoe until blade and shoe are flush with square. Retighten lever (J).
- Confirm accuracy by checking squareness of an actual cut on scrap material.
Kerf Indicator
Front of saw shoe has a kerf indicator for guiding along cutting lines. Indicator aligns with outer side of blade, making the cut fall to the right of the indicator. Guide along the penciled line so kerf falls into waste material.
Work Piece Support (Fig. 11)
⚠️WARNING: Support work properly and hold saw firmly to prevent loss of control. Figure 11 illustrates proper hand support. Maintain firm grip with both hands and position body/arm to resist kickback.
Figure 11 shows proper sawing position; hands are kept away from cutting area. To avoid kickback, DO support board/panel NEAR the cut (Fig. 12). DON'T support board/panel AWAY from the cut (Fig. 13).
Place work with its "good" side down. Saw cuts upward, so splintering is on the top face.
Cutting Procedures
Cutting
Place wider portion of saw shoe on solidly supported part of workpiece. Clamp work. Do not hold short pieces by hand. Support cantilevered and overhanging material. Saw from below cautiously.
Be sure saw is at full speed before blade contacts material. Starting saw with blade against material or pushed into kerf can cause kickback. Push saw forward at a speed allowing cut without laboring. Adjust speed for material hardness. Forcing saw can cause rough cuts, inaccuracy, kickback, and motor overheating. If cut goes off line, release switch, allow blade to stop, withdraw saw, sight anew, and start new cut slightly inside wrong one. Forcing correction can stall saw and lead to kickback.
IF SAW STALLS, RELEASE TRIGGER AND BACK SAW UNTIL LOOSE. ENSURE BLADE IS STRAIGHT IN CUT AND CLEAR OF CUTTING EDGE BEFORE RESTARTING.
As you finish a cut, release trigger and allow blade to stop before lifting saw. Telescoping guard closes automatically. Never reach under work. Use retracting lever for pocket cuts.
NOTE: When cutting thin strips, ensure small cutoff pieces don't hang up on inside of lower guard.
RIPPING (FIG. 14)
Ripping is cutting wider boards into narrower strips, cutting grain lengthwise. Hand guiding is difficult; rip fence is recommended.
POCKET CUTTING (FIG. 15)
CAUTION: TURN OFF TOOL AND REMOVE BATTERY PACK FROM SAW BEFORE CHANGING ACCESSORIES OR MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS.
CAUTION: Never tie blade guard in raised position. Never move saw backward when pocket cutting, as this may cause unit to raise off work surface.
A pocket cut is made in a floor, wall, or other flat surface.
- Adjust saw shoe for desired depth.
- Tilt saw forward, rest front of shoe on material.
- Using retracting lever, retract lower blade guard. Lower rear of shoe until blade teeth almost touch cutting line.
- Release blade guard. Grip auxiliary handle (M). Position body/arm to resist kickback.
- Ensure blade is not in contact with cutting surface before starting saw.
- Start motor, gradually lower saw until shoe rests flat on material. Advance along cutting line.
- Release trigger, allow blade to stop completely before withdrawing from material.
- Repeat for each new cut.
