Trimble R980 GNSS System
This document provides a quick start guide for the Trimble R980 GNSS System, detailing initial setup, operation, and regulatory compliance.
System Overview
The Trimble R980 GNSS receiver is a sophisticated device for precise positioning. Key components and connections are labeled:

Charge the Lithium-Ion battery
The rechargeable Lithium-ion battery is supplied partially charged. For first-time use, charge it completely using the dual slot battery charger and country-specific power supply and cord. The battery has built-in charge indicator LEDs; push the button on the battery to check its status. Charging takes approximately 3 hours at room temperature. Two batteries can charge simultaneously in the dual battery charger.

Insert the battery
To insert the battery, open the battery door by pushing down on the latch. Insert the battery with the metal contacts facing up and towards the rear of the bay. Push until the battery bail engages. To remove the battery, slide the bail to the left until it releases.
Power on the receiver
Press and release the power button on the front panel to power on the receiver. Initially, all four LEDs will light up for 3 seconds, then turn off, followed by the power LED lighting up again. To power off, hold the power button for 2 seconds. During power off, the battery LED stays lit, the satellite LED lights up and turns off after 2 seconds, and the battery LED remains lit for about 5 seconds before all LEDs turn off.

Activate Warranties, Install Options, Radio Frequencies, and Update Firmware
- Install Trimble® Installation Manager on your PC or Trimble data collector. Access it at install.trimble.com.
- Connect the receiver to your computer using a USB cable (e.g., P/N 80751) or a serial cable (e.g., P/N 59044, 59046).
- Start Trimble Installation Manager.
- Select the 'Receiver' tab and click 'Connect'.
- Choose 'COMx Trimble USB' from the list of available ports and click 'OK'.
Connect the UHF radio antenna
Connect the UHF antenna (P/N 129988) or external UHF antenna cable (P/N 130626-05) to the RP-SMA connector on the receiver. Do not overtighten.
Install the SIM card (optional)
Insert the SIM card with the contacts facing upward, as indicated by the SIM card icon next to the slot. To eject the SIM card, push it slightly to trigger the spring-loaded release mechanism.
Attach the Quick Release adapter
- Push down the spring-loaded button of the quick release adapter.
- Align the white dots on the bottom of the receiver and the quick release adapter.
- Slide the quick release adapter into place and release the button.
Antenna measurement methods
Measurement points for antenna setup are identified as:
- Bottom of antenna mount
- Bottom of quick release
- Lever of R980 extension
Connect to the receiver Web Interface
- Power on the receiver.
- On your computer or smart device, find the receiver's SSID in available Wi-Fi networks. The default SSID is 'Trimble GNSS xxxx', where 'xxxx' represents the last four digits of the receiver's serial number.
- Select the receiver SSID and connect to the Wi-Fi access point. The default network password is 'abcdeabcde'.
- Open a web browser and enter the IP address: http://192.168.142.1
- Log in using the default credentials: User name: 'admin', Password: 'password'.
- You will be prompted to change the default login credentials upon your first connection.

United Kingdom
Trimble Inc. declares that the R980 GNSS receiver complies with UK legislations: S.I. 2016 No. 1101 (Low Voltage, RF Exposure), S.I. 2016 No. 1091 (EMI/EMC), and S.I. 2017 No. 1206 (Radio Equipment).
Australia and New Zealand
This product conforms to the regulatory requirements of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Radiocommunications Act.
Europe
Trimble Inc. declares that the R980 GNSS receiver complies with directives RED 2014/53/EU, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU. It meets CE marking requirements and is approved for operation in EU member countries, Norway, and Switzerland. The device contains a Bluetooth radio module and is designed to provide protection against harmful interference.
