EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti KINGPIN Edition OC Guide
This document provides an overclocking guide for the EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti KINGPIN Edition graphics card.
RTX Card LN2-Ready Out of the Box
The K|NGP|N Edition graphics cards have established a standard for overclocking performance products. Building on the legacy of previous K|NGP|N Edition GTX 780Ti, GTX 980, 980 Ti, and 1080Ti, this latest addition features the new RTX 2080 Ti GPU. It offers a high-capacity digital power train, superior thermal performance, and fast Samsung GDDR6 memory. Exclusive features include voltage tuning control, a ProbeIt sensor port, voltage status LEDs, EVBOT support, single-slot compatibility, and optimized power connector placement for clean modding builds.
[Image Description: A detailed close-up view of a complex graphics card printed circuit board (PCB). The PCB is black with gold accents and features the "KINGPIN" branding. Prominent electronic components are visible, including multiple Samsung GDDR6 memory chips labeled "K4Z80325BC-HC14", various capacitors (e.g., C427, C339, C355), resistors (e.g., R15), and other integrated circuits. The layout suggests a high-performance design with dense component placement.]
Generation 4 of the KPE VRM 16+3 Phase Power Design
The TU102-300A "Turing" core is supported by a redefined 16+3 phase power train utilizing a flexible digital MPS controller. Each phase is capable of supporting a 60A peak current capacity, meeting the demanding requirements of the GPU during extreme overclocking (OC). A three-phase memory power solution is engineered for minimal ripple, ensuring stability for high GDDR6 clocks. For advanced users, the card's baseplate is separable, allowing for modular VRM heatsinks to facilitate aftermarket watercooling, phasechange, and LN2 blocks. It is recommended to consult the instruction manual and detailed OC information for such configurations.
Redefined 12-Layer PCB Supports Great Thermals and Performance
The PCB is a critical component of a graphics card, connecting all elements while minimizing excessive cross-talk and coupling. Larger PCB dimensions aid in heat dissipation and provide ample space for 11 temperature sensors strategically placed in key areas for continuous thermal monitoring. Power settings, including core and memory voltage droop, thermal override, and voltage offsets, can be adjusted either through onboard hardware switches or via software controls during overclocking.
Watercooling by Default for Silent Performance
The Turing GPU's boost clock mechanism benefits from lower temperatures. Watercooling offers an effective way to achieve optimal cooling while maintaining a silent system operation, even under heavy loads. This card features a factory hybrid cooler configuration, a first for the series. Additionally, it avoids stacked display connectors, allowing it to fit into slim builds and HTPC rigs when using the single-slot bracket.
Average Achievable Clocks
The average achievable clock speeds for this graphics adapter can vary significantly between individual cards. Factors such as GPU silicon quality (leakage), thermal performance, and power consumption will ultimately influence the card's overclockability across different cooling methods. The table below presents typical results:
Setting | EVGA RTX KINGPIN | Hydrocopper watercooling | Liquid nitrogen, -150°C |
---|---|---|---|
GPU stable boost clock | Over 2+ GHz | Over 2.1+ GHz | 2500+ MHz |
Memory stable clock | 8000+ MHz | 8100+ MHz | 8300+ MHz |
Memory voltage | 1.37 V | 1.43 V | 1.55 V |
3Dmark Time Spy | 15000+ pts | 15700+ pts | 18000+ pts |
3Dmark Time Spy Extreme | 7400 pts | 7700+ pts | 9000+ pts |
Test system used: Intel® Core™ i9-7980XE @ 4500MHz, EVGA X299 DARK, 4x8GB DDR4-4000, Windows 10 with 417.35 NVIDIA driver.
Important Note on Warranty
Modifying graphics card components will instantly void the GPU warranty. The suggestions and tips for overclocking provided herein are offered "AS IS" and solely for educational purposes. Please do not submit graphics cards with modified components or any signs of PCB tampering for RMA.
EVGA Precision X1
EVGA provides EVGA Precision X1, a comprehensive GPU tuning tool that allows control and monitoring of various card variables, including clocks, voltage, power limit, and fan speed, along with profile management. Precision X1 is the primary software tool recommended for performance tuning on any EVGA graphics card, including K|NGP|N editions, and is fully compatible with all GEFORCE series GPUs. Precision X1 tuning and monitoring software is available online at https://www.evga.com/precisionx1/.
[Image Description: A screenshot of the EVGA Precision X1 software interface. The interface displays controls and readouts for a graphics card. Key elements shown include sliders and input fields for "GPU CLOCK", "MEMORY CLOCK", and "VOLTAGE". There are also indicators for "FAN SPEED" (showing 1500 RPM), "GPU temperature", and "POWER TARGET". Buttons like "Apply", "Save", "OSD", and "HWH" are visible, along with a load indicator and a default/reset option.]
Power Tuning
All main voltage rails can be tuned individually: NVVDD for the GPU core, FBVDD for memory, and PEXVDD for various onboard interfaces and the PCI-express link power. A slight increase in memory voltage is beneficial for achieving higher memory frequencies. Simultaneously increasing memory and PEX voltages can assist in reaching higher core and memory frequencies during extreme overclocking (XOC) attempts.
Bonus Features
The onboard monitoring header provides access for precise voltage readouts using an external Digital Multi Meter (not included). The included PROBE IT header, labeled J20, is located near the status LEDs and BIOS switch on the PCB's top-right corner. A PROBE IT test leads adapter is bundled with each KPE card and EVGA DARK motherboard.
PROBE IT Header Pinout:
- Pin 1: NVVDD
- Pin 2: GND
- Pin 3: FBVDD (memory)
- Pin 4: GND
- Pin 5: PEXVDD (PLL)
- Pin 6: GND
- Pin 7: +1.8V input
- Pin 8: GND
- Pin 9: +12V input
