Dual-Stage Heat Protection
The FJ200 has a self-monitoring system for safe operation. If the internal temperature reaches:
- 131°F (55°C) (Stage 1): A red Bulb Icon appears on the screen, and recycle time increases to 2 seconds to aid cooling.
- 167°F (75°C) (Stage 2): A red OH icon appears, and the unit becomes inoperable for approximately 10 minutes until it cools sufficiently.
The OH icon will disappear once the unit is cool and ready for operation.
Getting Started
Charging the FJ200 Lithium Polymer Battery
- Ensure the FJ200 is OFF.
- Remove the battery from the FJ200 by sliding the release and pulling the battery away.
- Connect the FJ200 Charger Power Cord to the charger and plug into a wall outlet. Wait for the AC Power LED to turn red and battery LEDs to turn green.
- Align the battery's gold contacts with the charger pins and insert the battery until it locks.
- The battery is fully charged when all four battery LED indicators are full and stop blinking.
- Remove the battery from the charger.
Battery Charger LED Indicator Light Colors:
- Solid Red & Solid Green: Charger ready (no battery) or battery fully charged.
- Solid Red & Blinking Green: Battery is charging.
Attaching the FJ200 Lithium Polymer Battery
Align the battery's metal contacts with the pins inside the FJ200 battery compartment. Slide the battery release towards the rear and press the battery in until it clicks.
DC Power Operation
- Ensure the FJ200 battery is fully charged and inserted.
- Turn the strobe ON by pressing and holding the Power | Test button until the start-up screen appears.
AC Power Operation
AC operation requires the FJ200 AC Adapter (SKU#4749), sold separately.
- Ensure the FJ200 strobe is OFF and the battery is removed.
- Insert the 2-pin power cord into the FJ200 AC Adapter.
- Align the AC Adapter's metal contacts with the pins inside the battery compartment and press it in until it clicks.
- Plug the 2-prong connector into a standard wall outlet.
- Turn the strobe ON by pressing and holding the Power | Test button until the start-up screen appears.
Mounting
Mounting to a Light Stand
- Attach the tilter bracket to the FJ200's base using the 1/4"-20 thread on the locking dial. Ensure the curved side of the bracket faces forward.
- Rotate the locking dial clockwise to secure the bracket to the strobe (do not overtighten).
- Rotate the tilter bracket's tension knob counterclockwise to position the light stand receptacle perpendicular to the strobe. Retighten by turning the knob clockwise.
- Loosen the lower tension knob on the tilter bracket.
- Insert the light stand spigot into the FJ200's 5/8"-16 mm tilter bracket receptacle.
- Tighten the tension knob to secure the strobe to the light stand (do not overtighten).
Attaching & Removing Modifiers
Connecting the FJ200 Metal Reflector & Compatible Modifiers
- Remove the FJ200's Flash Tube Cover by sliding the adapter release, rotating the cover counterclockwise, and pulling it away.
- Align the four square mounting blocks of the FJ200 Metal Reflector (or compatible modifier) with the openings on the strobe's face.
- Insert and rotate the modifier clockwise until it locks into place.
Removing the FJ200 Metal Reflector & Modifiers
- Ensure the strobe is OFF and has cooled for five minutes.
- Carefully grasp the modifier.
- Slide the strobe's adapter release away from the modifier.
- Rotate the modifier counterclockwise until its mounting blocks align with the adapter openings, then gently pull the modifier away.
Attaching an Umbrella-Based Modifier
- Ensure the strobe is OFF and has cooled for five minutes.
- Slide the umbrella's shaft into the strobe's umbrella receptacle on the tilter bracket.
- Slide the umbrella to the desired position.
Note: The FJ200's tilter bracket does not have an umbrella tension screw. Avoid tilting the strobe at angles that could cause the umbrella to slide out and potentially cause damage.
Removing an Umbrella Based Modifier
- Ensure the strobe is OFF and has cooled for five minutes.
- Grasp the umbrella's shaft and gently slide it out of the FJ200 umbrella receptacle.
Note: Never force attachment or removal. Use caution when removing modifiers to avoid damaging the flash tube. Umbrella shafts larger than 8mm may not fit the receptacle.
Updating Firmware
The FJ200 features a USB-C port for firmware updates only. Updates can enhance performance and modify menu options. Visit fjwestcott.com/4740 to check for the latest firmware.
Installing the Firmware
- Visit fjwestcott.com/4740, go to the Support section, and download the latest firmware ZIP file. If your browser automatically unzips it, proceed to Step 3.
- Unzip the file and open the extracted folder.
- Read all files in the extracted folder (e.g., README, Changelog).
- Ensure the FJ200 is OFF and cooled before removing the battery.
- Connect the USB-A to USB-C cable to the FJ200's USB-C port.
- Your computer should recognize the FJ200 as an external drive.
- Locate the .BIN file on your computer and drag it to the FJ200 drive. Only the .BIN file should be copied.
- Once the file copy is complete, EJECT the FJ200 from your computer.
- Remove the USB-C cable and reinsert the battery.
- Press and hold the Power | Test button on the FJ200 to initiate the firmware update. Confirm installation by checking for the firmware version text in the bottom right corner of the screen during startup.
IMPORTANT
- Complete firmware updates with at least 50% computer battery power. Power loss during the update can render the FJ200 inoperable.
- Always eject the FJ200 from your computer before removing the USB cable to prevent potential damage.
- If copying issues occur, try closing the progress window and retrying, or restart your computer.
