Bosch Extractor Hood: Operating and Installation Instructions
Brand: Bosch
Product Type: Extractor Hood
Appliance Description
This section details the components of the extractor hood:
- Chimney panelling: The decorative cover for the vent pipe.
- Filter grille: The removable metal mesh that captures grease.
- Lighting: Integrated lights for illuminating the cooking surface.
- Light / fan switches: Controls for the lighting and fan speed.
Operating Modes
The extractor hood can operate in two modes:
Exhaust-air mode:
The extractor fan draws kitchen vapours through the grease filter and expels them into the atmosphere. The grease filter traps solid particles, keeping the kitchen free of grease and odours. Special care is required when operating simultaneously with other combustion appliances (e.g., gas heaters) that share a chimney, to ensure adequate fresh air supply to prevent the risk of combustion gas poisoning.
Circulating-air mode:
This mode requires an activated carbon filter to neutralize odours. Vapours are purified by the grease and activated carbon filters and recirculated back into the kitchen. Replacement filters are available from specialist outlets.

Operating Procedure
For effective vapour removal:
- Switch the ventilator ON as soon as cooking begins.
- Switch the ventilator OFF a few minutes after cooking finishes.
Lighting: The light can be switched on or off independently of the fan.
Controls typically include a light switch (Off/On) and ventilator speed settings (0, 1, 2, 3).
Filters and Maintenance
Grease Filters:
Metal filters trap grease particles. They are made from non-combustible metal. As filters saturate with grease, the risk of fire increases, and hood efficiency decreases. Regular cleaning reduces fire risk from heat build-up.
Cleaning:
- Clean metal grease filters monthly for normal daily use (1-2 hours).
- Filters can be cleaned in a dishwasher, though slight discolouration may occur. Ensure filters are placed loosely, not wedged.
- Do not wash grease-saturated filters with other dishes.
- For hand cleaning, soak filters in hot soapy water, brush clean, rinse thoroughly, and drain. Avoid aggressive cleaners.
Activated Carbon Filter:
Used for neutralizing odours in recirculating mode. Filters become saturated with grease, increasing fire risk and reducing effectiveness. Replace the activated carbon filter annually for normal use (1-2 hours daily). Use only original filters for optimal performance. Old filters can be disposed of as household refuse.
Diagram shows removing metal filters by pressing a catch and folding them down. It also shows inserting activated carbon filters into the fan motor area and rotating them to lock.
Cleaning and Care
Always isolate the hood from the power supply before cleaning.
General Cleaning:
- Do not use abrasive sponges or cleaning agents containing sand, soda, acid, or chlorine.
- Clean the hood with hot soapy water or mild window cleaner.
- Wipe off dried-on dirt with a damp cloth.
- Remove grease deposits from accessible parts of the housing during filter cleaning to prevent fire risk and maintain efficiency.
- Clean switches with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent solution only. Do not use stainless steel polish on switches.
Stainless Steel Surfaces: Use a mild, non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner, cleaning in the direction of the grind/polish. A specific cleaner (no. 461731) is recommended.
Aluminium, Coated, and Plastic Surfaces: Do not use dry cloths. Use mild window cleaning agent. Avoid aggressive, acidic, or caustic cleaners.
Replacing Light Bulbs:
- Isolate power.
- Remove grease filters.
- Press down the bulb cover and disconnect from the light strip.
- Replace bulb with a standard filament bulb (max 40 W, E14 holder).
- Reattach the lamp cover.
- Re-insert grease filters.
- Restore power.
Observe warranty regulations in the enclosed service booklet.

Exhaust-air Mode Details:
Exhaust air is discharged through a ventilation shaft or directly outside. It should not be directed into flues used for other purposes or shafts ventilating rooms with fireplaces. Discharge must comply with official regulations. When used with other combustion appliances sharing a chimney, ensure adequate fresh air supply to prevent underpressure (< 4 Pa) and risk of combustion gas poisoning. Unrestricted operation is possible with a recirculating mode and activated carbon filter. A telescopic wall box is recommended for external discharge.
Diagram shows airflow in exhaust-air mode and dimensions for the hood and ducting, including minimum distances of 550mm for electric and 650mm for gas hobs.
Pipework Requirements:
- For exhaust-air mode, a one-way flap should be fitted inside the hood if not already present in the ductwork.
- Use short, smooth exhaust pipes with minimal bends. Larger pipe diameters are preferred to maintain extraction rate and reduce noise.
- Flat ducts must have an internal cross-section equivalent to round pipes. Avoid sharp bends.
- Air Connector Sizes:
- ⌀ 150 mm: Mount pipe directly to hood outlet. Use reducing connector for exhaust-air duct.
- ⌀ 120 mm: Mount pipe directly to hood outlet. Use reducing connector for exhaust-air duct.
