Philips HeartStart FR2+ Defibrillator

Instructions for Use

About the HeartStart FR2+

The Philips HeartStart FR2+ Defibrillator (FR2+) is a compact, lightweight, portable, and battery-powered automated external defibrillator. It is designed for use by trained responders to treat ventricular fibrillation (VF), the most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

The FR2+ features a Status Indicator for immediate readiness assessment, an On/Off button, and a Shock button. Its display screen provides text prompts and incident information, complemented by voice prompts delivered through a built-in speaker.

Available in two models, the M3860A and M3861A, the FR2+ offers distinct features. The M3860A model provides a configurable ECG display and manual charge capability in advanced mode, while the M3861A offers a text prompt display without ECG and no manual charge in advanced mode.

Indications for Use

The HeartStart FR2+ is intended for use with disposable defibrillator pads applied to victims of sudden cardiac arrest who are unresponsive and not breathing normally. If in doubt, apply the pads.

For children under 8 years or weighing less than 55 pounds (25 kg), use FR2 Infant/Child reduced-energy defibrillator pads if available. Otherwise, use the standard pads.

The device is designed for use by trained responders qualified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), or other authorized emergency medical response programs.

Principles of Operation

The HeartStart FR2+ Defibrillator provides external defibrillation therapy for sudden cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation (VF). It works by delivering a shock across the heart to restore a regular rhythm.

When connected to properly applied defibrillator pads, the FR2+ guides the user through the process:

  • Provides specific action prompts.
  • Analyzes the patient's heart rhythm and advises if a shock is needed.
  • Enables the Shock button and instructs the user to deliver a biphasic electric pulse when appropriate.

For detailed operational instructions, refer to Chapter 3 of the full manual.

Maintenance and Safety

Regular maintenance, testing, and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial for the proper functioning of the HeartStart FR2+. This includes understanding warnings and cautions related to device use, defibrillation, monitoring, and maintenance.

For more information on device maintenance, testing procedures, and troubleshooting, consult the relevant sections of the manual.
