DEWALT Power-Bolt® Heavy-Duty Sleeve Anchor Technical Guide

General Information

Product Description

The Power-Bolt anchor is a heavy-duty, sleeve-style, self-locking anchor that is vibration-resistant and removable. It is available with a finished hex head or a flat head with a hex key insert and is suitable for use in concrete, block, brick, or stone.

Expansion occurs at two locations within the drilled hole. First, the cone is pulled into the large triple-tined expansion sleeve, creating a mid-level compression force. Further turning draws the threaded bolt into the expander cone, forcing its four sections outward to engage the base material deeply. The bolt and cone remain locked, resisting loosening under vibration.

The anchor is designed to draw the fixture into full bearing against the base material via its flexible compression ring, which may crush if necessary during tightening to secure the fixture against the base material's face.

The internal bolt is removable and reusable within the same anchor sleeve, making it ideal for applications requiring machinery removal for service or for temporary heavy-duty formwork.

Nomenclature

Diagram Description: Illustration showing anchor nomenclature with labels for diameter (d), drill bit diameter (dbit), fixture clearance hole diameter (dh), flat head diameter (dhd), washer outer diameter (dw), base material thickness (h), nominal embedment depth (hv), overall length (l), and fixture thickness (t).

Installation Procedure

  1. Step 1: Drilling Use the appropriate diameter drill bit to drill a hole into the base material to a depth at least 1/2 inch or one anchor diameter deeper than the required embedment. Ensure drill bit tolerances meet ANSI Standard B212.15.
  2. Step 2: Cleaning Remove dust and debris from the hole using a dust extractor, hollow bit, or forced air. Do not modify the anchor or advance the bolt before installation.
  3. Step 3: Insertion Drive the anchor through the fixture into the anchor hole until the bolt head is firmly seated against the fixture, ensuring the anchor reaches the required embedment depth.
  4. Step 4: Tightening Tighten the anchor by turning the head 3 to 4 full turns past finger tight, or to the maximum specified bolt torque.

Performance Data

Ultimate and Allowable Load Capacities in Normal-Weight Concrete

Tables provide ultimate and allowable load capacities (tension and shear) for various anchor diameters (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8") and embedment depths, tested in concrete with compressive strengths of 2,000 psi, 3,000 psi, 4,000 psi, and 6,000 psi. Note: Ultimate load capacities require a minimum safety factor of 4.0 for allowable working loads.

Ultimate and Allowable Load Capacities in Lightweight Concrete

Tables provide ultimate and allowable load capacities (tension and shear) for various anchor diameters (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8") and embedment depths, tested in lightweight concrete with compressive strengths of 3,000 psi and 5,000 psi. Note: Allowable load capacities use a safety factor of 4.0.

Ultimate and Allowable Load Capacities for Power-Bolt Installed Through Steel Deck into Lightweight Concrete

Tables detail ultimate and allowable load capacities (tension and shear) for anchors installed through minimum 20 gauge metal deck into lightweight concrete (f'c ≥ 3,000 psi). Capacities are provided for 1-1/2" wide decks and 4-1/2" wide decks, considering various anchor sizes and embedment depths. Note: Allowable load capacities use a safety factor of 4.0.

Ultimate and Allowable Load Capacities in Grout-Filled Concrete Masonry

Tables present ultimate and allowable load capacities (tension and shear) for anchors installed in grout-filled concrete masonry (f'm ≥ 1,500 psi). These tables specify minimum edge and end distances and anchor spacing requirements. Note: Allowable load capacities use a safety factor of 5.0.

Diagram Description: Illustration showing permissible anchor locations in grout-filled CMU, indicating wall face, grout-filled CMU, mortar joint, minimum edge distance, and minimum end distance.

Ultimate and Allowable Load Capacities in Hollow Concrete Masonry

Tables show ultimate and allowable load capacities (tension and shear) for anchors installed in hollow concrete masonry (f'm ≥ 1,500 psi), including minimum edge and end distances and spacing requirements. Note: Allowable load capacities use a safety factor of 5.0.

Design Criteria (Allowable Stress Design)

Combined Loading

For anchors subjected to both shear and tension loads, the combination of loads should be proportioned using the following formula: (Nu / Nn) + (Vu / Vn) ≤ 1, where Nu is the applied service tension load, Nn is the allowable tension load, Vu is the applied service shear load, and Vn is the allowable shear load.

Load Adjustment Factors for Spacing and Edge Distances

Tables provide load adjustment factors for anchors installed in Normal-Weight Concrete and Structural Lightweight Concrete. These factors (FNS, FVS, FNC, FVC) account for reductions in capacity based on anchor spacing (s) and edge distance (c) relative to critical (cr) and minimum (min) distances.
