Compact 5000 Digital 16-point Sinking Input Modules
Catalog Numbers: 5069-IB16, 5069-IB16F, 5069-IB16K
About the Module
The 5069-IB16, 5069-IB16F, and 5069-IB16K digital 16-point sinking input modules detect input transitions on field devices, meaning they detect when an input changes state from OFF to ON or from ON to OFF. These modules convert input state transition signals to the appropriate logic level used in the controller.
Compact 5000™ I/O modules utilize the Producer/Consumer communication model, an intelligent data exchange where each module produces data without being polled.
These modules are used as local I/O modules in CompactLogix™ 5380, Compact GuardLogix® 5380, and CompactLogix 5480 controller systems. They can also function as remote I/O modules with these controllers and some other Logix 5000™ controllers.
For detailed usage information, refer to the publications listed in the Additional Resources section.

Important Safety Information
ATTENTION: Read this document and related installation, configuration, and operation documents before installing, configuring, operating, or maintaining this product. Users must be familiar with installation and wiring instructions, as well as applicable codes, laws, and standards. All activities, including installation, adjustments, commissioning, use, assembly, disassembly, and maintenance, must be performed by appropriately trained personnel in accordance with applicable codes of practice. Improper use may impair the equipment's protection.
This equipment is intended for use in a Pollution Degree 2 industrial environment, in overvoltage Category II applications (as defined in EN/IEC 60664-1), at altitudes up to 2000 m (6562 ft) without derating. It is not intended for residential environments and may not provide adequate protection to radio communication services there.
The equipment is supplied as open-type for indoor use and must be mounted within a suitably designed enclosure that prevents personal injury from live parts and has appropriate flame-retardant properties (5VA rating or approved equivalent). The enclosure interior must be accessible only by a tool.
Ground Considerations: Ground DIN rails according to Industrial Automation Wiring and Grounding Guidelines, publication 1770-4.1. Use zinc-plated chromate-passivated steel DIN rail for proper grounding. Secure DIN rail approximately every 200 mm (7.8 in.) and use end-anchors. Refer to publication 1770-4.1 for more information.
System Power Considerations: Power is supplied by a controller or adapter. Available power types are Module (MOD) power and Sensor/Actuator (SA) power. MOD power operates the I/O modules via the MOD power RTB and bus. SA power powers field devices via the SA power RTB and bus. A system has one MOD power bus. SA power buses are isolated; multiple SA power buses can be established using 5069-FPD field potential distributors. If using AC and DC SA power, they must be on separate SA power buses.
Recommendation: Use separate external power supplies for MOD and SA power to prevent unintended consequences and ensure power availability if one supply fails.

Install a System
Before installing the module, ensure a CompactLogix 5380 controller, CompactLogix 5480 controller, Compact GuardLogix 5380 controller, or a Compact 5000 I/O EtherNet/IP™ adapter is installed. Refer to Additional Resources for installation details.
Required Components
To install the module, you need:
- Removable Terminal Blocks (RTBs): Order separately (e.g., 5089-RT818-SPRING, 5089-RT818-SCREW). Order only the required type.
- End Cap: Ships with controllers and adapters. Used to cover exposed interconnections on the last module.
- Tools: Screwdriver, wire stripper, wires.
Install the Removable Terminal Block (RTB)
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect the RTB with power applied to prevent electric arcs and potential explosions in hazardous locations. The RTB does not support "removal and insertion under power" (RIUP).
- Hook the bottom of the RTB onto the module.
- Push the RTB against the module until it clicks into place.
- Push the RTB handle against the RTB until another click is heard.
Install the Module
WARNING: Do not insert or remove the module while backplane power is on to prevent electric arcs and potential explosions in hazardous locations. The module does not support "removal and insertion under power" (RIUP).
- Confirm MOD power and all SA power sources are off. Removing a module with power applied can affect system power.
- If an end cap is installed on the right-most module, remove it for later use. ATTENTION: Do not discard the end cap; it is needed for the last module on the DIN rail to prevent damage or shock.
