Meet the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
The Nest Learning Thermostat features a circular display that provides key information about your home's climate.
Display Overview:
- Active Preset: Indicates if the thermostat is using Comfort, Eco, or Sleep temperatures.
- Mode: Displays a snowflake ❄️ icon for cooling and a waving icon for heating.
- Indoor Temp: Shows the current temperature inside your home.
- Target Temp: Displays the temperature you want your home to reach.
- Active Mode: The display turns blue when cooling and orange when heating.
Thermostat Controls:
- Press the thermostat: Tap the device to view more information.
- Back: Press to return to the previous screen.
- Mode: Press to change the current operating mode (heating, cooling, off).
- Hold: Allows you to maintain a specific temperature for a set duration.
- Eco Hold: Sets an energy-saving temperature for a specified period.
- Sensors: View temperature readings from connected sensors.
- Fan Settings: Control the fan operation, such as setting a time to run the fan for air circulation.
Understand what your thermostat is doing
The thermostat's display provides real-time updates on your home's climate status.
Information Displayed:
- Time and Humidity: Quickly check the current time and indoor humidity level (e.g., WED 8:30 HUM 52%).
- Target Temp: The temperature your system is actively working to achieve.
- Activity Description: Provides an easy-to-understand summary of the thermostat's current action, such as "30 minutes until cooled to 75°".
Smart Schedule adapts to you
The Nest Learning Thermostat learns your preferences over time to create an optimized heating and cooling schedule.
Schedule Types:
- Comfort: Temperatures set for when you are home and awake.
- Sleep: Temperatures balanced for comfort and energy savings during sleep.
- Eco: Energy-saving temperatures used when the home is unoccupied.
- Custom: Allows you to define your own preset temperatures.
The thermostat continuously learns from your adjustments. For example, if you start waking up earlier, it can adjust your Comfort temperature to be ready sooner. It may also identify small changes to Sleep temperatures that can increase savings without impacting comfort.
Control or automation, it's your choice:
You can choose how the thermostat implements learned adjustments:
- Suggestions: Receive notifications on your phone via the Google Home app for suggested temperature changes. You can then accept or reject these suggestions. If notifications are off, review changes in the app's Activity tab.
- Automatic: Allow the thermostat to automatically implement learned adjustments without requiring your approval.
Manage hot and cold spots in your home
Use the Google Home app to select which sensor informs heating and cooling decisions. You can use the thermostat's built-in sensor or a Nest Temperature Sensor.
Your schedule can utilize different sensors at different times. For instance, use the thermostat sensor during the day and a bedroom sensor at night. You can also select multiple sensors for the thermostat to target, creating an average temperature across those rooms.
Save when you're away
Utilize Eco Temperature settings to save energy when no one is home. The thermostat offers features to simplify this process.
Eco Features:
- Eco: During setup, define your preferred Eco Temperatures for heating and cooling. Enable presence sensing to automatically switch to Eco Temperature when the home is empty.
- Adaptive Eco: This feature dynamically sets an Eco Temperature based on outdoor conditions and your home's heating/cooling behavior. It adjusts savings based on factors like the day's temperature, ensuring you get back to your Comfort temperature within an hour of returning home.
Help your thermostat maximize Eco savings
- Enable presence sensing: Activate Home/Away routines. Your phone's location and sensors in compatible Google Home devices (including your thermostat) help determine if the home is empty, automatically switching to an Eco Temperature.
- Turn on geofencing: Geofencing enhances presence sensing by providing a general signal when your phone is outside your home's vicinity, without tracking your precise location. This can be enabled in the Google Home app.
- Add more devices: Include other Google Home devices with built-in sensors (like displays and speakers) to improve the accuracy of occupancy detection. Your thermostat's motion sensor also contributes to this.
Take advantage of cleaner energy with Nest Renew
Nest Renew's Energy Shift feature can adjust your home's energy usage to cleaner or cheaper times of day. You can learn more and join at nestrenew.google.com.
Energy Shift makes minor adjustments to your thermostat's set points to shift electricity usage away from less clean or more expensive periods. This feature is available in areas served by major continental US grids and can prioritize less expensive energy for customers on specific utility time-of-use rates.
More helpful, intelligent features
Energy-Smart Features:
- Humidity Helper: Monitors and maintains a comfortable average humidity level, preventing air from becoming too dry or too humid. Requires a Google Home app and a compatible HVAC system (air conditioner, heat pump, humidifier, or dehumidifier).
- Natural heating and cooling: Utilizes outdoor temperature data to heat or cool your home naturally when possible, reducing HVAC system runtime and saving energy.
- Smart ventilation: Optimizes fresh air intake based on outdoor air quality and weather conditions. Requires a Google Home app and a compatible HVAC ventilation system.
- Adaptive Comfort: Delivers heating or cooling precisely based on how your environment actually feels.
- System Health Monitor: Tracks your HVAC system's performance, detecting potential issues and sending alerts via the app. It also provides reminders for air filter replacements and seasonal maintenance. Alerts offer helpful information but do not constitute an endorsement or warranty of your HVAC system's health.
Customizing your thermostat's home screen:
Dynamic Farsight allows you to personalize the information displayed on your thermostat's screen when viewed from a distance or up close. You can customize it to show the time, weather, humidity, outdoor air quality, and more through the Farsight settings in the app.
