Introduction to Your Golf
This guide provides essential information for your Volkswagen Golf. For comprehensive details, always refer to the Owner's Manual and Infotainment Supplement. Always pay attention to the road and avoid distractions while driving. Some infotainment features are only accessible when the vehicle is stationary.
1. Digital Cockpit Display
Customize your instrument cluster display. Use the VIEW button on the steering wheel to cycle through main display views. Configure secondary displays using the horizontal menu buttons and vertical arrow buttons on the right-side steering wheel controls.
2. Head-Up Display (not shown)
Projects key information onto the windshield, including speed and driver assistance system actions. To activate: Infotainment > Vehicle menu > Vehicle > Interior > Head-up display > toggle Head-up display to Active.
3. Quick Access Buttons
Buttons below the Infotainment system for quick access to features:
- ASSIST: Access and modify driver assistance systems.
- CLIMA: Control climate settings like temperature, fan speed, and airflow.
- MENU: Access the Park Assist system menu for parking assistance.
- MODE: Select the vehicle's driving mode (e.g., steering feel, engine sound).
4. Infotainment
Touch-sensitive icons control radio, media, App-Connect, phone, vehicle functions, and navigation. Press, hold, and drag icons to reposition them.
5. Start-Stop System (not shown)*
The engine automatically shuts off when the vehicle stops and restarts when the brake is released. The system activates upon ignition. Deactivate via the Infotainment system's pull-down menu.
*Available on DSG transmission only.
6. Automatic Transmission Selector Lever
With the brake pedal depressed, move the lever to select gear positions (P, R, N, D). The selected position is indicated next to the lever.
7. USB-C Port
Connect mobile devices for data and charging. USB-C ports are located in the front cubby and rear of the vehicle. A compatible cable is required.
8. Steering Wheel Left Side Controls
Control driver assistance features and adjust volume for radio, navigation, and phone calls. On R models, select driving modes using the ▶️ button.
9. Steering Wheel Right Side Controls
- Voice Control Button: Short press for native voice recognition; long press for paired phone's digital assistant.
- VIEW Button: Switches between display views (Summary, Classic, Navigation, Driver Assistance, Special). Configure secondary displays using ⬆️/⬇️ and confirm with OK. Press and hold VIEW to show/hide secondary displays.
- OK Button: Confirm selections and answer calls.
- Steering Wheel Heating: Press to turn on/adjust intensity.
- Horizontal Menu Buttons: Navigate main instrument cluster menus.
- Vertical Arrow Buttons: Navigate within menus.
- Horizontal Arrow Buttons: Change radio stations or media tracks.
10. Wireless Charging
Charge Qi-compatible phones by placing them on the designated surface. Charging status is indicated on the Infotainment system display.
Infotainment/Climate Control
Infotainment Customization
Customize Infotainment icon order by touching and holding an icon, then dragging it to the desired location. Create custom widget pages by swiping to the last page, touching and holding a widget, tapping EDIT, then the '+' key to choose a layout. Add widgets by tapping a widget space and selecting from the list. Up to four layout screens are supported.
Climate Control
Access climate controls by pressing the CLIMA button. Traditional controls are under the Classic Climate tab.
- Fan Speed: Use touch-sensitive keys or the slider bar to adjust fan speed.
- Temperature: Tap +/- buttons for small adjustments, or press and hold the temperature number and drag left (-) or right (+) for larger changes. The slider bar can also be used.
- Seat Heating: Tap icons to activate or adjust intensity. Auto on is available in the Settings menu.
- Sync: Applies driver's settings to passenger and rear climate zones.
- On/Off: Tap the ▶️ button at the top of the screen to turn climate control on/off.
Smart Climate
Offers climate control shortcuts:
- Clear view: Defogs/de-ices the windshield.
- Warm feet / Warm hands: Directs warm air to footwells or steering wheel.
- Cool feet: Directs cool air to footwells.
- Fresh air: Directs fresh outside air into the interior.
- Quick cooling/heating: Temporarily increases cooling/heating power.
TPMS/Keyless Access/Memory Seats
TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Recalibration
After correcting low tire pressure, switch the ignition off and back on. To recalibrate:
- Switch ignition ON.
- Turn on Infotainment system.
- Tap Vehicle on the Infotainment touchscreen.
- Tap Vehicle (left-hand side) ▶️.
- Tap Tires.
- Tap Set.
- Tap OK if all tires meet pressure requirements.
The system adapts to new values after longer drives.
Keyless Access
Unlock and lock the vehicle without using the key, provided a valid key is within range. The trunk locks/unlocks with the doors. Configure in Vehicle > Exterior > Central Locking.
Unlocking the Vehicle
- Ensure Keyless Access is configured.
- Approach with a valid key.
- Slip hand behind the handle to unlock; turn signals flash twice.
- Double-tap behind the handle to unlock all doors.
Locking the Vehicle
- Park the vehicle.
- Touch the sensor on the outside of the door handle; turn signals flash once.
Memory Seats
Save preferred seat and mirror positions:
- Adjust seat and mirrors.
- Press and release the SET button.
- Press and hold Memory button 1, 2, or 3 until a chime sounds.
Note: Memory seat feature is optional for GTI models. Buttons are on the driver's side.
Windshield Wipers/Light and Vision Panel
Windshield Wipers
- Intermittent/Rain-Sensing: Move wiper stalk down one click from OFF. Adjust interval with the top switch. Ensure stalk is in OFF position before car wash.
- Continuous: Move wiper stalk down two clicks for LOW, three clicks for HIGH.
- Rear Wiper: Push lever one click away from you. Activates with front wipers in Reverse.
- Service Position: Vehicle > Exterior > Service position to move wipers.
Light and Vision Panel
Turning on the Lights
- Switch ignition ON.
- Tap the ▶️ button repeatedly to select light setting in the Digital Cockpit.
- ? Low Beams: Green icon indicates low beams are on.
- AUTO: Automatic headlights adjust based on ambient brightness.
- ? Daytime Running Lights: Green icon indicates parking and daytime running lights are on.
Climatronic Defrost: Clears windshield fog/ice with increased blower speed.
Rear Window Defroster: Switches on/off while driving, automatically turns off after 10 minutes.
- ? Fog Lights: (If equipped) On with parking or low beam headlights.
- ? Poor Weather Lights: (If equipped) Improve visibility in poor conditions. Ignition must be on.
Navigation
Access Navigation from the home screen. The map shows your current position and suggested destinations. To enter a destination:
- Press the Navigation icon.
- Select the Search tab.
- Enter address or Point of Interest (POI).
- Select the correct address from the suggestion bar.
- Select Start to begin the route.
Note: Address entry and settings changes require the vehicle to be stationary.
Additional Settings
Modify route criteria in Navigation menu: Settings > Route guidance > Route options. Or tap ▶️ when a route is active.
Cancel Active Route Guidance
Tap the ❌ to the right of the route plan.
Alternative Navigation
Mirror smartphone apps via Volkswagen App-Connect using a USB-C cable or wireless connection.
Car-Net Plus Navigation*
Provides real-time traffic, route calculations, and map updates for smarter navigation.
*Excludes Golf GTI S trim models.
**Availability subject to mobile network coverage and requires a paid subscription.
Driver Assistance Features
Activate Cruise Control
Press the ▶️ button on the steering wheel. A speedometer icon appears in the display.
Set Cruising Speed
- Press the SET button at your desired speed.
- A green cruise control indicator light ? appears.
- Use +/- buttons to adjust speed by 1 mph increments, or press and hold for 5 mph increments.
Cancel and Resume Cruising Speed
- Cancel: Press the brake pedal or the ▶️ button.
- Resume: Press the RES button.
Turning Cruise Control System Off
Press the ▶️ button twice.
Travel Assist System
Enables automatic steering, acceleration, and braking to keep the vehicle centered in its lane and maintain distance from vehicles ahead. Driver supervision is required.
- Press the ▶️ button at your desired speed.
- Cancel: Press the brake pedal or the ▶️ button.
- Resume: Press the ▶️ button.
Note: RES button only resumes Adaptive Cruise Control, not lane centering.
Adaptive Cruise Control Distance Level Setting
Helps maintain a set speed and distance from the vehicle ahead. The system may brake if necessary and accelerates when the path is clear. Set distance to one of five levels by pressing the ▶️ button. The indicator light ? illuminates. To resume ACC after a stop longer than 3 seconds, briefly press the accelerator pedal.
Deactivating Adaptive Cruise Control
To use Conventional Cruise Control: Press the ▶️ button, scroll to Speed in the Digital Cockpit, select Cruise Control, and press OK.
Assistance System Setting
Modify Driver Assistance feature operation via the Infotainment system:
- Press the ASSIST button.
- Touch the feature's image or select from the system menu.
Bluetooth®/Voice Recognition
Pairing a Compatible Phone
- Turn on Infotainment system with ignition ON and vehicle in Park.
- Search for new devices on your phone and select 'MY VW XXXX' (last four digits of VIN).
- Confirm the PIN displayed on the Infotainment screen and your phone, then press Pair.
- Allow contacts to sync.
- Select Handsfree for pairing.
Note: Enable future automatic connections. Pairing must be completed within 30 seconds.
Primary and Secondary Phone Functionality
Two phones can connect simultaneously. Only primary phone contacts are displayed. Switch phones by tapping the phone name in the top right of the Phone screen.
Note: This feature is not available with Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™.
Voice Recognition via Volkswagen Native Infotainment
Control navigation, climate, media, and telephone using voice commands. Activate via the Talk button on the steering wheel or the activation word, "Hello Volkswagen." To enable activation word: Home > Settings > Voice control > enable Activation word.
To launch voice control:
- Short press of the Talk button activates native voice recognition.
- Long press activates the paired mobile device's digital assistant.
Voice Recognition Tips
- Ensure contact names are spoken exactly as stored.
- If multiple numbers exist for a contact, specify (e.g., "Call John Smith work").
Answer an Incoming Call
Press the OK button on the steering wheel or the green Phone icon on the Infotainment screen.
Volume Settings
Adjust Bluetooth system volume using the Volume Up/Down buttons on the steering wheel.
End a Call
Press the red Phone icon in the Infotainment display.
Cancel Active Voice Recognition or Active Route Guidance
Press the Voice Control button or say, "Cancel."
App-Connect/myVW
Wireless App-Connect with Apple CarPlay Integration
- Pair phone via Bluetooth.
- Select Apple CarPlay when prompted on the vehicle touchscreen.
- Accept confirmation on iPhone®.
Alternatively, connect your iPhone via USB with a certified lightning cable and select Apple CarPlay. Your iPhone may ask to use Apple CarPlay wirelessly for future connections.
Apple CarPlay®
Use iPhone features like Siri, Maps, and Messages on the touchscreen. Ensure latest iOS is installed. Connect via USB or Bluetooth pairing. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the Voice Control button or the Home button on the touchscreen.
- Home: Returns to Apple CarPlay home screen or Dashboard.
- Phone: Make calls, return missed calls, listen to voicemail via Siri.
- Maps: Turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions, and navigation via Siri.
- Messages: Send, read, and reply to text messages via Siri.
- Volkswagen Logo Icon: Switches to Volkswagen native interface while keeping Apple CarPlay active. Disconnect by pressing this icon and selecting Disconnect.
Note: Requires unlocked iPhone within the past hour. iPhone cannot be used as a MEDIA source or Bluetooth device when connected via Apple CarPlay. Compatible with iPhone 5 or higher running iOS 7.1 or later.
Wireless App-Connect Android Auto
- Pair phone via Bluetooth.
- Select Use Android Auto or Cancel for Bluetooth connection.
Android Auto™
Use Android applications on the touchscreen. Activate Google Assistant via the Microphone icon, Voice Control button, or by saying "Hey Google." Requires Android 6.0 or higher, an active data plan, and the Android Auto app.
- Microphone: Activate Google Assistant for messages, directions, and media control.
- Navigation: Predictive navigation with turn-by-turn directions and traffic conditions.
- Phone: Send messages, make calls, check voicemail.
- Home Screen: Returns to Android Auto home screen.
- Music and Audio: Access music and stream from apps like Pandora and Spotify.
Exit Android Auto by tapping the Exit icon to return to the Volkswagen native user interface.
myVW
Access essential tools and information: service reminders, scheduling, history, maintenance schedules, and roadside assistance requests. Activate VW Car-Net® Remote Access for features like lock/unlock, vehicle alerts, and last parked location.
myVW Enrollment Process:
- Download the myVW app.
- Sign up with email and password.
- Click the verification link in the email.
- Set up your account.
- If your car isn't visible, enter the VIN (found on the driver's side dashboard).
- Create a 4-Digit PIN.
- Activate VW Car-Net for remote features.
