Product Overview
The Keeley Bassist is a Low Frequency Optimizer, functioning as a high-quality compressor and limiter designed for bass guitar.
Controls and Features
THRESHOLD
Adjusts the compression threshold, the point at which compression is activated. Lower settings activate compression more frequently. Higher settings require more intense playing to engage compression.
COMPRESSION (Ratio)
Sets the compression ratio above the threshold. A 1:1 ratio means no compression. An infinite:1 ratio signifies hard limiting. Higher ratios result in more noticeable compression and reduced dynamic range.
GAIN
Adjusts the output level to compensate for signal reduction caused by compression. This control can also be used to boost the signal for driving an amplifier. Higher GAIN settings may introduce more noise.
FOOTSWITCH
Engages and disengages the effect.
Specifications
- Type: Compressor / Limiter
- Power Requirements: 9V DC, center-negative, 50mA+
- Input: Mono Instrument Input
- Output: Mono Instrument Output
Settings and Operation
Basic Settings
- Set the THRESHOLD control to your desired level. For "always-on" compression, observe the LED changing rapidly as you play. For subtle compression and limiting, set the THRESHOLD so the LED only changes for louder playing.
- Adjust the COMPRESSION (Ratio) control to your preference. Turning clockwise increases compression; counter-clockwise decreases it.
- Use the GAIN control to compensate for any loss in output level.
Parameter Notes
THRESHOLD: This is typically the first parameter set on a compressor. For signals exceeding the set threshold, the level is reduced according to the COMPRESSION ratio. Signals below the threshold remain unaffected. The THRESHOLD LED should not constantly be green. For limiter or very clean compression, set the threshold so the LED turns red only during very hard playing. For more noticeable compression, set it so the LED turns red frequently during normal playing intensity.
COMPRESSION (Ratio): This control determines the amount of gain reduction applied to signals above the threshold. The ratio indicates the decibel increase at the input required for a 1dB increase in output. For example, a 5:1 ratio means that for every 5dB the signal increases above the threshold, the output level will only increase by 1dB. Higher compression ratios lead to a more "squashed" sound and less dynamic range. Lower ratios provide more subtle and cleaner compression. Adjust this control according to your needs.
GAIN: The GAIN control sets the final output level of the pedal. It can provide up to +20dB of boost. This is useful for compensating for level reduction during compression or for boosting your signal to drive an amplifier. Be aware that higher GAIN settings may introduce more noise. If you tend to set GAIN very high, check that your THRESHOLD and COMPRESSION settings are not reducing the signal excessively.
ATTACK & RELEASE: This pedal does not feature adjustable attack and release controls. It operates with a response time of 125dB per second, a value previously established as "pleasant to the ear." Compressors employing RMS detection, such as this one, utilize a single time constant parameter. The attack and release characteristics are managed by a capacitor that adapts to your playing style and input signal level. Consequently, the attack and release of the compression dynamically adjust based on the content and style of your playing.
