CAUTION: The stabilizer uses high energy density batteries. Improper storage or handling can cause fire, economic loss, or personal injury. Always read the disclaimer and warning information carefully before use. Use only ZHIYUN batteries or ZHIYUN-approved batteries. ZHIYUN is not responsible for accidents caused by non-ZHIYUN batteries.
When not in use, store batteries in the provided slot or in separate plastic storage cases.
Charging Procedure
- Insert batteries into the charger, observing correct polarity (positive/negative end).
- Connect the charger to the adapter using the USB Type-C cable.
- Plug the adapter into a power outlet to begin charging.
Diagrams illustrating the charging setup are provided in the original document.
Note: Charging may fail with insufficient power supply (e.g., adapter current lower than 500mA). Use an adapter with higher current capacity. Batteries cannot be charged via the stabilizer's USB port.
Important: Use a qualified 5V/ ≥ 2000mA adapter. Charging time varies with adapter input current. Use only ZHIYUN batteries. Ensure batteries are fully charged to prevent stabilizer malfunction.
Installation and Balance Adjustment
Tripod Installation
Mount the tripod to the bottom of the stabilizer and unfold it on a flat surface. Position one tripod leg parallel to the handle for maximum stability.
Battery Installation
Unlock the battery compartment, remove the cover, and insert the three 18650 batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Use the lifting strap at the bottom of the compartment for easy removal.
Camera Installation
Each axis of the stabilizer has latches for locking. These latches can be set to three stages: unlocked, semi-locked, and locked. Use the unlocked stage during operation. For setup, storage, and transportation, use semi-locked or locked stages as needed. Always set to semi-locked before locked to prevent damage.
Diagrams showing axis latch stages are provided in the original document.
- Mount the camera onto the quick release plate and tighten the screws.
- Adjust the lens support on the quick release plate for lens stability, adapting to your specific camera-lens combination.
- Slide the quick release plate onto the stabilizer and lock the quick release plate latch.
Note: The 1/4" and 3/8" screws on the quick release plate are pre-installed. Use both screws for cinema cameras and the 1/4" screw for DSLR/mirrorless cameras.
Control Cable Connection
Connect the camera's control port to the stabilizer's camera control port using the provided camera control cable.
Camera Compatibility:
A detailed table outlines camera compatibility for different connector types (Type-C to Micro USB, Mini USB, Type-C, Multi USB) and camera models (Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sony) across various functions (Photo, Video, Live Preview, etc.).
How to select camera brand:
- Method 1: In the ZY Play app, navigate to CRANE 3S page, go to Settings, and select the correct Camera Brand.
- Method 2: When using a SmartSling Handle, select the camera brand from the menu.
Notes:
- Check the ZHIYUN website for the complete compatibility list.
- When controlling a Sony camera, power on the stabilizer before the camera. Ensure the camera is fully charged. Optical zoom requires a motorized lens; digital zoom works with non-motorized lenses. Settings can be adjusted in the camera menu.
- Visit www.zhiyun-tech.com for the full CRANE 3S Camera Compatibility List.
Balance Adjustment:
To facilitate adjustment, lock all three axes before beginning. Unlock and adjust each axis individually:
- Tilt Axis Balance (Forward/Backward): Unlock the tilt axis and quick release plate latch. Move the camera forward or backward until it is stable and nearly level with the lens facing forward. Tighten the quick release plate latch.
- Tilt Axis Balance (Upward/Downward): Make the lens face up. Slightly loosen the tilt axis thumb screw and move the camera upward or downward until it is stable and facing up. Tighten the thumb screw.
- Roll Axis Balance: Unlock the roll axis and slightly loosen its thumb screw. Move the camera left or right until it is stable and horizontal to the ground. Tighten the thumb screw.
- Pan Axis Balance: Unlock the pan axis and slightly loosen its thumb screw. Adjust the pan axis until it is stable and horizontal to the ground. Tighten the thumb screw.
Diagrams illustrating each balance adjustment step are provided in the original document.

- The stabilizer has not been used for a long time.
- The stabilizer has experienced significant temperature changes.
Initialization Method:
- Install batteries correctly.
- Hold the quick release plate, long press the power button to turn on the stabilizer. Once powered on, motors will exert force. Hold the plate firmly and long press the MODE button to enter standby mode.
- Place the stabilizer still on a flat surface and wait approximately 30 seconds for automatic initialization.
Six-side Calibration:
Calibration can be performed via the ZY Play app, Zhiyun Gimbal Tools software, or the stabilizer's OLED display guide.
- Via APP: Connect to the stabilizer, enter "Six-side Calibration" in the app, and follow prompts.
- Via Zhiyun Gimbal Tools: Connect the stabilizer to a computer via USB Type-C, launch the software, and follow the calibration steps. A "✓" mark indicates completion.
- Via OLED Display: Connect a SmartSling Handle, power on, enter standby, navigate to "calibration" via the menu, confirm, and select "yes" to start. Follow on-screen prompts. A "✓" mark indicates completion.
Note: Six-side calibration involves placing the camera mounting plate on a level surface in six different orientations.
Diagrams illustrating the six calibration steps are provided in the original document.
Motor Fine-tuning:
Fine-tune motor settings (tilt and roll axis) via the ZY Play app under "Settings" > "Motor Calibration" based on your needs.
Stabilizer Firmware Update:
Method 1 (USB): Connect the stabilizer to a computer via USB Type-C. Download the USB driver and latest firmware from www.zhiyun-tech.com. Install the driver and launch "Zhiyun Gimbal Tools" to perform the update.
Method 2 (APP): Connect the stabilizer to the ZY Play app. If a firmware update prompt appears, tap to update.
Before updating: Ensure both stabilizer and phone have over 50% battery. Do not exit or background the app during the update.
