Towing a Trailer
TOWING WEIGHT
Understanding the maximum permissible towing weights is crucial for safe towing. These weights vary depending on the type of trailer and the driving conditions (tarmac or off-road).
Maximum Permissible Trailer Weight | Tarmac | Off-road |
---|---|---|
Trailers without brakes | 750 kg (1650 lbs) | 750 kg (1650 lbs) |
Trailers with overrun/electric brakes (4WD) | 1800 kg (3968 lbs) | 750 kg (1650 lbs) |
Trailers with overrun/electric brakes (2WD) | 1500 kg (3330 lbs) | 750 kg (1650 lbs) |
Nose weight | 150 kg (330 lbs) | 150 kg (330 lbs) |
For additional information on Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Train Weight (GTW), axle loads, and maximum payload capacity, refer to page 247, WEIGHT.
For European countries only: The maximum permissible gross vehicle weight may be exceeded by a maximum of 100 kg (220 lbs) provided the vehicle speed does not exceed 97 km/h (60 mph).
Note: When calculating the load on the rear axle, remember to include the nose weight of the trailer, any luggage in the vehicle's boot, the weight of a roof rack, and the weight of rear passengers.
WARNING: Do not exceed the maximum permissible load for the vehicle or trailer. This can lead to accelerated wear and damage to the vehicle. It can also negatively affect vehicle stability and braking efficiency, potentially leading to loss of control and vehicle rollover or collision.
To maintain controllability and stability, use only approved Land Rover towing equipment.
WARNING: Do not use the towing eyes or body mounting points for towing trailers. They are not designed for this purpose and may fail under load, causing injury or death.
ESSENTIAL CHECKS BEFORE TOWING
- Do not loop the safety cable around the tow ball – it could slip off.
- Do not exceed the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), maximum rear axle load, maximum trailer weight, or nose weight. Exceeding any of these limits can lead to loss of stability and control.
- When calculating towing weight, consider not only the trailer's weight but also the weight of its contents.
- If the load can be distributed between the vehicle and the trailer, increasing the vehicle's load generally improves stability.
- Do not exceed the vehicle's weight limits.
- Ensure the trailer's tire pressures are set according to the trailer manufacturer's recommendations.
- To maintain vehicle stability, the trailer should be loaded to sit level. This is particularly important when towing twin-axle trailers.
- When loading the vehicle to its maximum permissible weight, the nose weight is limited to 150 kg (330 lbs). See page 247, WEIGHT.
- Always use a suitable safety cable or secondary coupling. Refer to the trailer manufacturer's instructions for details.
- Ensure the tow ball coupling is securely fastened.
- Check that the trailer's lights are functioning correctly.
For Australia only: Nose weight must be at least 7% of the total caravan/trailer weight, but not exceeding 150 kg (330 lbs).
TRAILER ELECTRICS CONNECTION
Connect only approved and functional electrical equipment to the trailer socket. The vehicle's towing electrics socket has a 5A output. If a higher output is required, a 15A upgrade kit is available from a Land Rover dealer.
If the trailer's electrical system is connected and the vehicle's indicators are working, the trailer indicator warning light will flash in sync with the vehicle's indicators.
REAR DOOR CLEARANCE
Before opening or closing the tailgate, ensure there is sufficient clearance for the trailer. Note: Trailers with LED lights do not disable the rear parking sensors. When selecting reverse gear, a connected trailer will be detected as an obstacle.
TRAILER STABILITY ASSIST (TSA)
When a trailer is connected, the TSA system automatically detects the onset of trailer oscillation. It will gradually reduce the vehicle's speed, reduce engine power, and apply the brakes to restore control.
TRAILER CONNECTION ASSIST
The trailer connection assist feature is selected via the touchscreen and is designed to simplify the process of connecting the vehicle to the trailer hitch. See page 120, SURROUND CAMERA SYSTEM.
DETACHABLE TOW BALL
Installation and removal instructions are supplied with this optional accessory. Ensure they are kept in a safe place.
TOW BALL COUPLING DIMENSIONS
The following dimensions should be considered when selecting a tow ball for the coupling:
A. Maximum recommended tow ball length is 178 mm (7 inches).
B. To achieve maximum tow ball height, a tow ball with a 68 mm (2.7 inch) rise is recommended.
For the latest information, consult your Land Rover dealer or authorized workshop.
TOWING EQUIPMENT MOUNTING POINTS AND DIMENSIONS
The following diagram illustrates the mounting points and dimensions for towing equipment:
