terneo smart control of heating

terneo s Technical datasheet Installation and operating instructions

Overview

The terneo s thermostat is designed to maintain a constant temperature from 5 to 40 °C in underfloor heating systems based on:

  • Electric heating cable or film
  • Water floor using a normally closed electrothermal servo with an operating voltage of 230V.

According to the data from the temperature sensor, the thermostat controls the heating: turns off the heating when the desired temperature is reached and turns it on when it drops by 1 °C.

Connection Scheme

Thermostat supports two types of sensors: analog sensor (factory setting) or digital sensor (D18).

Temperature sensor is connected to terminals 1 and 2. To connect a digital sensor:

  • Connect blue wire to terminal 1, white wire to terminal 2;
  • In the functional menu of the thermostat, select the type of sensor: d18 (see table 1, menu item «Sensor type»).

Power voltage (230 V ± 10 %, 50 Hz) is supplied to terminals 4 (N, neutral) and 5 (L, phase).

Load (connecting wires from heating element) is connected to terminals 3 and 6.

Important: The thermostat is mounted and connected after the installation and load testing. After installation, make sure that the external sensor and mains voltage are connected correctly. Incorrect wiring can cause failure of the thermoregulator.

Wiring 1. Connection of the circuit breaker and SSD: This diagram shows the connection of a circuit breaker (CB) and a Safety Shutdown Device (SSD) in series with the phase (L) wire before the thermostat. The neutral (N) wire bypasses these. The thermostat's power input is connected to terminals 4 (N) and 5 (L). The load is connected to terminals 3 and 6. The diagram illustrates a typical safety setup for floor heating systems.

Wiring 2. Wiring and simplified internal circuit: This diagram shows the internal simplified circuit of the thermostat, indicating connections for the sensor (terminals 1, 2), power (terminals 4, 5), and load (terminals 3, 6). It also depicts connections to a contactor and the main power supply with circuit breaker/SSD. The diagram highlights how the thermostat controls the heating load via a contactor.

Installation

The thermostat is designed for indoor installation. When installed in a bathroom, toilet, kitchen, or swimming pool, the thermostat should be installed out of reach of casual spraying.

The ambient temperature during installation must be between -5 ... +45 °C. The installation height of the thermostat should be in the range of 0.4...1.7 m above the floor level.

To protect against short-circuit in the load circuit, a circuit breaker (CB) must be installed before the thermostat. The circuit breaker should be rated for not more than 16 A. To protect people against electric shock, a Safety Shutdown Device (SSD) must be installed, which is obligatory when installing floor heating in wet areas. For the SSD to function, the heating cable screen must be grounded (connected to the protective conductor PE) or, in a two-wire network, the screen must be connected to zero before the SSD.

The thermostat is mounted in a standard mounting box (60 mm diameter) using mounting screws. For installation:

  • Make a hole in the wall for the box mounting and a chase for power wires and the sensor.
  • Bring the power wires of the heating system and the sensor to the mounting box.
  • Make connections according to the passport data.
  • Fix the thermostat in the mounting box.

The thermostat terminals are designed for wires with a section not exceeding 2.5 mm². Using soft wire is recommended to reduce mechanical loads on the terminals. Wires should be tightened with a screwdriver blade width no more than 3 mm. Using a wider blade can damage terminals and void the warranty. Terminals should be tightened with a torque of 0.5 N·m.

If necessary, the sensor connecting wires can be reduced or increased (up to 20 m). It is unacceptable to use conductors from the multiwire cable powering the heater to extend the sensor wire.

Figure 1. Mounting the thermoregulator and warm floor system: This diagram illustrates the physical installation of the sensor within the underfloor heating system. It shows the heating cable, the sensor placed inside a protective mounting tube, a coupling, installation tape, and a sealing end for the tube. The diagram emphasizes that the sensor must be mounted in a way that allows for easy replacement.

Exploitation (Operation)

Use the [menu-button] button to navigate the menu (Table 1). Use the [plus-button] and [minus-button] buttons to change parameters. The selected parameter will flash initially, then change upon a second press. The display returns to showing the temperature after 5 seconds. Button brightness is reduced to 30% when not in use.

Temperature selection

(Factory setting 25 °C) Use [plus-button] and [minus-button] to select the temperature. The red indicator lights up when the load (warm floor) is supplied. In case of sensor failure, the thermostat operates in percentage control mode.

Hibernation

Hold the [menu-button] for 4 seconds until "---" appears, then "OFF". To switch off completely, turn off the circuit breaker. To exit hibernation, hold [menu-button] for 4 seconds until "ON" appears.

Button blocking (child and public protection)

Press the [plus-button] and [minus-button] simultaneously for 6 seconds until "Loc" (or "OFF") appears.

Resetting to factory settings

Hold any 3 buttons until "dEF" appears. The thermostat will restart and reset to factory settings.

Firmware Version

Hold the [minus-button] for 6 seconds. The manufacturer reserves the right to make changes to the firmware to improve thermostat characteristics.

Possible Problems, Causes and Ways to Overcome Them

Problem: The load does not operate according to the settings; every 5 seconds the screen displays «OC» or «SC»

Cause: Open circuit or short circuit of the sensor. The temperature controller has switched to Emergency Timer Mode.

Possible reason: Failed connection, damage to the sensor circuit, or temperature exceeds the measured limits.

Required: Check the sensor connection to the thermostat and its circuit. Check for mechanical damage along the wire and proximity to power wiring.

Operation in Emergency Timer Mode: Ensures heating operation if the sensor is damaged. The user selects the ON time percentage (10-90%) within a 30-minute cycle. Default is 50% ON, 50% OFF. Heating temperature control is not available in this mode.

Problem: The load is disabled, «oht» flashes on the screen

Cause: Temperature inside the device exceeds 85 °C, triggering internal overheating protection.

Possible reason: Poor terminal contact, high ambient temperature, exceeding power output, or incorrect wire cross-section.

Required: Check terminal wire tension, ensure load does not exceed limits, and verify correct wire cross-section.

Protection feature: Device unlocks when internal temperature drops to 80 °C. If protection trips more than 5 times, the device is blocked until it cools to 80 °C and a button is pressed.

Problem: Every 5 sec the screen displays «Ert»

Cause: Open or short circuit of the internal overheating sensor. Control over inner overheating will not be done.

Required: Send the device to the Service Center.

Problem: The load is disabled, indicator nor the screen light up

Cause: No power supply voltage.

Required: Check power supply voltage. If available, contact the Service Center.

Problem: When the screen turns on, it displays 5 seconds «Er0»

Cause: Malfunction of the control system for zero-crossing detection.

Required: Send the device to the Service Center.
